Hello again everyone! Yeah, I know, the camera quality is horrendous. I unfortunately found out on the day of recording that my usual lighting setup was out of order. I figured just going to the brightest part of the building and using my camera's low-lighting setting would be enough. Apparently it was not. 😅
Sorry about that! By the time I had found out, I had already rambled on for literally hours. What you're seeing is actually an extremely cut down version of the original recording to include only the most interesting parts. I literally have enough left over footage to create a part two or three of this if I was crazy enough to do it! I considered scrapping the video entirely due to the issues, but I figured this was still better than absolutely no content.
That being said, thanks for your understanding and patience as I work on the next video. I think it'll be something all of you will really enjoy!

OOF on the bad sponsorship.
why did you pick NordVPN as the sponsor?, haven't you heard of what happened to them?, as in the leaks and stuff they've been exposed from.
The first ever DLC was the ancient Mesopotamians downloading the river Tigris onto their irrigation systems.
They downloaded the Tigris onto there Jaguars!
The first ever DLC was the Universe Expansion
Pretty sure that's the first instance of streaming, actually.
@@Corvidsong I thought that was part of the base game
What
This man deadass only has a couple of videos and still makes better content than 90% of CZcamsrs
And the great thing about these quality-over-quantity type channels is that they have much better audience loyalty and retention
And has a Nord VPN sponsorship lol
you could say the same for Oversimplified who does have a nord vpn sponsership and audience loyalty and blah blahh blah
Not to mention too many sponsors to count.
90% of youtubers are terrible kids cartoon makers.

Confirmed here the Xbox is in fact a bank.
I thought I had seen everything but then I realized that someone composed a song for the The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Save Data Update Channel.
The music is actually from the twilight princess soundtrack, from ordon village if I remember correctly
skyward sword channel has Twilight Princess music. Wow
i thought it was the animal crossing city folk channel theme
Fun fact: the Save Data Update Channel is one of the few things (the other one is the Wii U Transfer Tool) still downloadable from the Wii Shop without you needing to have already obtained it beforehand.
Gonna say, you got me with "That thing's the size of a quarter, then I picked up the rest of the bank."
Dragon Quest X for the Wii did have game patching. The Dolphin (the GC/Wii emu) guys made an article about it some time ago.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that! It came with that weird USB drive that it would install updates to!
I remember the Berry Glitch. I was very frustrated as a child, and then one day, after trading some Pokemon from my Pokemon Colosseum copy, it worked again. I found out why some years later, but I love when people mention that glitch because I can actually relate to that.
Stop lying, its obvious that the lip sync is *too* perfect
Wut
This reminds me a lot - Nintendo didn’t have patches for ages, but they DID have a shitload of DLC that you got from connecting two games together - odd as they are in this regard, the Pokemon games are notorious for this, as well as the Legend of Zelda Oracle games. But there’s actually a really awesome and unknown example of this out there which is almost blatantly in defiance of patch rules, and it’s really fun to talk about because it only game out in Japan.
Super Robot Wars 64 is a MASSIVE fucking game. In terms of pure content, I think it's probably the biggest game in the franchise in general, and if it's not then it's really close. There are so many permutations of the four protagonists, the many routes, their many sub routes, and secrets and such that it's frankly absurd. But hidden in the cartridge are a bunch of things that even in this game didn't show off at first, and I suppose it's to be expected that in a crossover game like this they'd hide literal entire series.
So how did you get them? Easy. On the GB at the time, there was a game called Super Robot Wars Link Battler. It was an... alright puzzle game, if nothing totally special. But it had bare bones versions of a lot of stuff 64 had, and it also happened to have three whole series that weren't in 64. And if you connected Link Battler to 64, well, the two games would trade content off, and suddenly you'd end up with Zambot 3, Goshogun, and Gundam F91 (with the Vigna Ghina) and all their pilots along for the ride on your copy of 64.
And this wasn't a minor thing, too. They went ALL OUT. Each series has its own theme, which shows up in the frigging karaoke mode. The two pilots from F91 have a Love bonus (additional damage if they're next to each other) and as UC pilots, half the game's units are usable by them - and their units, which are solid in the early game, are usable by anyone else. Goshogun has a secret move that you can unlock by upgrading it correctly. And Zambot 3 can decombine into its components, one of which has its own transformation, AND it has a combination attack with a different robot in the game (64 was the first game in the franchise with combos and they went nuts on them). On top of that, they join you through a side stage that happens to be able to change depending on which ones you get.
Link Battler, meanwhile, can grab the 64 protagonists from 64, and can additionally give pilots in 64 extra levels, which is meant to play off that game's scaling level curve to allow for more interesting high level gameplay well earlier than intended. It's fun as fuck.
Mattman324 insane bro
Now THAT'S an ambitious crossover
The pokemon games are the most shitty kind of DLC, they sell the other content as a separate game for "encouraging online interaction"

Horse Armor didn't provide armor to the horse, but it did double their health, capped at 750. However, the way it did this was by replacing the existing horse with a different entity, the armored version, and the armored horses had terribly buggy AI.
this channel has the most positive feedback on any channel I’ve ever seen by far, not only did you blow up, you managed to only reach people who love this type of content. It really is a CZcams miracle.
will add that I can’t think of anyone more deserving of a CZcams miracle, keep doing what you do man (or honestly do whatever you want because I’m still down to watch) I love it, everyone loves it. Tech rules uploaded everyone liked that
the skyward sword patch still works I believe, and is literally the only thing left on the Wii Shop Channel apart from the transfer tool
Dial-up was pretty acceptable for downloading content that fit in a 100kB VMU. Of course you'd have to establish the connection (with that sick computery riff) which is the hardest part.

Yesssss, get those sponsorships!!!!!
I always forget that I'm subscribed to this channel but that's great because it's like a little surprise when you post :-)
Great to see you posting again!
Man, the Berry Glitch patch... They put that thing everywhere. There were physical distributions of it, too, via Game Cube demo kiosks in stores. That version of it came with an added bonus - you got a Shiny Zigzagoon out of the deal, along with fixing your games clock.
Actually, now I'm wondering if it was stealth included somehow in the Gen IV games, in Pal Park. I mean, I doubt it, but I can't shake the question now...
To access palpark you had to use the title menu to migrate pokemon and it would save both games at once, it could have been added in that save process
"I make the video, I make the rules, shut up" shut up and take my sub
13:05 *laughs in Brawl*
Really though, I do agree that trying to make the game feasible to play unpatched is a good philosophy, even if a lot of older games, including ones produced by Nintendo or for Nintendo systems, honestly do need a patch or two...
As the wise man says, hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
Dragon Quest X and Cave Story on the Wii also had updates, DQ X came with a USB stick that the game (as well as the expansions) installed to, Cave Story just had to be redownloaded.
Hi rulez :D
(GBA)Cartridges were ROM mostly, so that patch must have been downloaded on the save chip(EEPROM?), either by modifying some value about the time counter variable or, as some guys have done with older Pokemon games, by installing subrutine that reset the value each time it reaches 1 year.
It would be very interesting to know seeing the limitations of the hardware...
Short answer: The patch modifies a time counter variable, which in theory should prevent the glitch from ever recurring (in practice, there are circumstances that can cause it a second time).
Long answer: Basically, the game stores the time both as a date in a clock inside the cartridge, and as a numerical value in the save file. There's a conversion function in the code that will turn the date into the numerical value the save file uses. When the cartridge clock's date rolls over, _and_ it converts into a number higher than the save file's current value, the save file's day counter increases by one and a new day starts in the game. If the clock's date ever converts to a value lower than the save file value (which can happen either due to a flaw in the conversion function, or a problem with the battery that powers the cartridge clock), the day counter doesn't change. The patch works by setting the cartridge clock to a date that - at the time the glitch was first being reported - would be greater than or equal to the save file value.
@@Naixatloz ingenious! Thanks for the detailed response :)
10 MINUTE POWER HOUR JUMPER. dude nice. As if I didn’t have enough reasons to love this channel
What's funny is another part of GBA dlc that was missed: Mystery Gift and Pokemon events. Gen 3 event items for the Old Sea Map, Mystic and Aurora tickets. Essentially little bits of code sent to the cartridge as a key to cause the coded event chain to start and to alter the flag in the save data. And then the normal event transfer and downloads which existed back in Gen 1 with the Mew events and competitions.
Even trading in general, the transfer of data from one cartridge to another counts as DLC with an upload and download exchange of content.

This was by far the most entertaining of all your vids until now :) great work man, keep it going!
man i love his videos like everytime when there is a notif for new tech rules video i get so hyped
Just happened for me. It popped up in my recommended and I was like "OH SHIT TECH RULES"
It's actually a really cool and interesting video
The little sound problems aside (when you get too close), I find this to be 100% worth a video, I wouldn't mind having videos like this from time to time
You're back! I love your vids bro!
I often rewatch informative type videos from channels I like because firstly, I like the content, and secondly, I tend to forget some of what I learned, and I like learning things. Just wanted to let this strange man know, whoever he is, that his channel grew to be one of my favourites on all of CZcams really quickly. Hope you're doing well!
Wasn't sure about this format but found myself really liking it, because I can watch it without sending full attention and mostly listening while it plays on my other monitor. Great job! Super interesting topic
I'm so glad you're back! Your channel is so good!
There was another way to softlock your game in Twilight Princess, with a similar saving issue. There was a large bridge that you would need to teleport elsewhere in the game. If you teleported the bridge, but saved before leaving the area, you would reload on the wrong side of the now missing bridge, and would be unable to continue.
I can hear the theme from Sonic Adventure's Casinopolis.
I love your videos! The quality speaks for itself and I bet lot of ppl are waiting to discover this channel
I really like how Nintendo made patches before the 3ds and wii u
They always find little interesting ideas.
Like an e-reader card that can patch your game, that's so cool
Also very cool video dude, the french guy that I am enjoyed it a lot
The E-Reader cards are very simple in that they send a coding instruction to the E-Reader itself & the GBA it's inside of that writes a simple program with text and functions to be used with the 2nd GBA. They're like printed Batch Files, barcodes or even QR codes now that just hold a long string of binary that gets translated. Then, the program that is created just alters the save file of the cartridge to adjust the calendar.
I love these channels, this is legit stuff I’ve never heard of before instead of the same recycled trivia you hear thrown around most channels. I’m losing my mind that I didn’t know about the berry update thing in fire red and leaf green, I thought I knew basically everything about those games
This was really fun, I would love to hear you talk more like this.
It's always good to experiment with content and try new stuff.
Literally as soon as I clicked on your 3ds video, I got a notification about this one. Hi rad!
I really appreciated that video tbh
And I learned way more stuff that I could think of, like the Dreamcast VMU DLC or the only patch on Wii

Skyward Sword is one of my favorite games and this is the first time I heard of this glitch. WELP. I guess I know what to avoid doing lol.
Tech rules bits, I like every once in a while this informal kind of videos, keep up the good research!
man this video is so good and tech rules is so funny for no reason
I hadn’t heard about the berry glitch before, what a neat way to roll it out.
Great video as usual :)
THE KING UPLOADED
Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility had a bug that made one of the bachelor's unmarriageable. You had to send in your disc to fix the bug too. It made it so the game would freeze during the 5th heart event in the mines and you couldn't go to the 10th level without marrying Calvin, because the game would freeze.
With how much love you give the Dreamcast I'm surprised to see no mention of Phantasy Star Online, the first online RPG on consoles. Online multiplayer 3D "dungeon" crawling on console with 3 people anywhere in the world in 2000! It was such a big deal at the time that they even put "Online" in the name of the game.
The Dreamcast really was too far ahead of its time. Microsoft ended up consulting Sega heavily when they were developing the Xbox (their first console).
Great video, always great seeing you pop up in my feed
Hey, I think this is a really cool format! I hope we get more Bits.
Tech Rules BITS is actually a really nice thing to listen to, like a podcast!
The first dlc nintendo made with wifi was in pokemon crystal where in Japan using a dial up phone you get celebi, but like mew in gen 1, the event can be triggered with a cheat device or glitches, and is actually in English weirdly enough
vids like this are just as good, please do more!

I'm a little disappointed you didn't explain why the Magneto costume was removed from MVC3. The costume itself was based on an outfit Magneto wears in the House of M storyline which looks exactly like what Juan Carlos, King of Spain, wears in his official royal photograph. Either to avoid controversy or potential legal action from Spanish royalty, Capcom removed the costume altogether. The costume was even removed from the recent current gen port of UMVC3 which includes all costumes and both DLC characters. However, if you have the game on PC, you can simply mod the costume back in.
the pokemon rs berry update thing is genuinely so interesting
Dude, I just binge watched your entire channel.
I was thinking "who is this strange child," but I respect the confidence 😂
This was interesting! Thank you for making this video!
The werid thing about Skyward Sword is that it did have an update, at least for me it did. I have never played the game before and two months ago or so, I started it up, but then it gave me the message that I had to update it. And then it updated somehow... and then it started and everything was fine, well Link sometimes walks when I'm not pushing the analog stick but whatever.
And note that I have ever connected my Wii to the internet. Never the wi fi, never the LAN... There's a possible, reasonable explanation for it, but probably something you didn't mention and that I don't know of...
That wasn't a game update. Skyward Sword contained the last System Update, this was to ensure the WiiMotion Plus worked at its peak and maybe some display or loading optimizations. The walking thing sounds like your controller is either dirty or busted
HE’S BACK

I read somewhere that Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally supposed to be DLC for the original Mario Galaxy. It became a standalone title because the devs added so much stuff that it could be its own game.
dang this was good! great narrator! too bad theres only 5 videos in the last 12 months... but hopefully things will pick up a bit more!
Ah yes. TEK RULS
About the Dlc on disc thing for the ps3/360:
In Dark Souls 2, if you have full vanilla, no dlcs, you can still access dlc areas if you put your sign down in front of the place, people summon you and open the area. It only works in their worlds, in yours it remains locked. But it's still pretty neat
Was the actual DLC added in patches, though? In that case it wouldn't be on-disc DLC, the content would just be part of a patch for compatibility purposes
