Gordon is one of our Canadian treasures. This song is the story of the breakup of his marriage. He has written more than 250 songs. Bob Dylan called him one of his favourite songwriters. His songs have been covered by many artists, including Dylan, Streisand, Johnny Cash and many more.

I read that Gordon Lightfoot wrote the song while he was in the middle of a divorce with his wife. Knowing that, it is more than a great song, it becomes one I can really feel his story.

Gordon was one of the world's best singing poets, a troubadour so to speak....an amazing artist that I can say I have seen perform this song in person

  • @stitchingintheinterlake3591

Gordon Lightfoot is a Canadian folk singer who has been singing since the 1950’s. This song always makes me want to cry. It’s so sad and I feel his pain having lost his true love. When you listen to his songs you will hear that same sadness throughout them in one way or another. He is a national treasure to us here in Canada. You can also listen to Burton Cummings and the Guess Who…most of the band members grew up here in Winnipeg and so I can here that distinctive Winnipeg sound in the band. Awesome video…Blessings 😘❤️✝️🇨🇦

It's so nice to listen once again to this perfect song. We are still grieving his passing and will never get tired of hearing him. Check out his early music. My favourite is The Last Time I Saw Her.

'Beautiful' is a romantic song from Gordon. Another is 'Softly She Comes' lovely romantic song. I saw him when he was young and I was young in 1969 in a coffee shop basement in Toronto. He was yet to be famous but captivating the audiences right from the start. Great reaction.

Gordon Lightfoot also wrote a song called The Canadian Railroad Trilogy. It's long, but epic. It was commissioned by the government funded Canadian Broadcast Corporation to commemorate Canada's 100th Anniversary in 1967. The arrangement done by Gord are incredible and of course the lyrics really tell a story.

As a proud Canadian I cannot begin to tell you how much this man's music has meant to me and my family. I saw him several times at Massey Hall in Toronto and he was such a wonderfully creative performer and wordsmith and always left the stage leaving us all more fulfilled.
I hadn't seen him perform for many years but for my 65th birthday my two sons and beautiful daughter's-in-law treated me to another Lightfoot performance. He was in his late 70's at that point and he'd definitely lost a step or two and his voice didn't have the full register and rich timbre of his younger days but it was a wonderful moment for me and my family. He was a titan of the music industry, a true troubadour, a master storyteller and I'm so thankful I've been able to enjoy his music for 6 decades. Thank you young lady for this lovely, thoughtful and heartfelt reaction, you just earned yourself another subscriber. RIP Gordie. Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

Hi OGO. The song is autobiographical. Gordon's marriage was falling apart. He tried and tried to understand why his wife had turned away from their marriage, She never said and he couldn't read her mind. The feelings he couldn't get back were the feelings of his wife towards him. They did end up getting divorced. You are looking as beautiful as always. Take care Dear friend, RNB

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is one of his most famous. Gordon Lightfoot was a great story teller. If I were to get bad news, let Gordon give it to me, he sounds like he really cares.
