Fly Tying The Barker Buzzer

- The Barker Buzzer, well this is what I call it. It is a rather simplistic pattern that was passed to me some twenty years ago by my pal Ronnie Christie. He got given it after taking a bit of a kicking in an AMFC (Affiliation of Major Flyfishing Clubs) match from Dave Barker. Where the patterns origins lie I don’t really know. Al Owen ties a very similar pattern that is regarded by many as the only buzzer you will ever need!
I have had success with other Buzzer patterns but I always seem to come back to this one. Can be tied on straight shank hooks as well. It has worked particularly well on Rutland Water.
No surprise it's made your top 5 for early season. The wing buds make it stand out. Besides using goose boots I also use fluorescent acrylic paint and paint the wing buds on. The UV resin
coating keeps everything intact and saves time if you're tying a batch.
It used to be the only buzzer I ever used.

Hi Lindsay, I think this pattern is from the late Dave Barker. Dave was an exceptional fly fisherman and caught the record Grafham rainbow which will be on view at the Grafham Lodge once this CV 19 is kicked into touch.
Thats exactly right Rodger, one of my good pals shared a boat with him in an AMFC match. He got his arse handed to him and Dave gave him the fly which then came to me.

Just thought I would check out this buzzer after your live session today ..... if you didn't cut the quill until you had wound the body you wouldn't need a hackle plier or finger tip control!! Atb Jim

Hi Tony, The Greyboy Buzzer uses flexi floss as the rib. Both flies have a similar profile, my preference is this one only because I have used it for many years. I am sure others would sing the praises of the Greyboy, at the end of the day it comes down to confidence in the pattern. Why not tie both and see how you go?

@@lindsayiflyfish Hi Lindsay, please could you tell me what is the exact material you used for your Barker buzzer rib ???? Is it the flexi floss OR span flex ??? Which one ? And in what exact colour ? Thank you. I am surprised that you've been using your Barker buzzers the exact ones you tie as explicitly seen in your videos has given you a lot of success every time you go fly fishing. Is it at the banks reservoirs or boat out in the middle of reservoirs? I think BOTH Greyboy buzzers and your Barker buzzers do well because they are so similar that fuzzy trout wouldn't have to bother to choose which one, but eat both of them at any given time, Agree ?????

For me straight line buzzer fishing to get the depth. If you know the depth the bung can be very good.
What's the difference between a buzzer and a midge nymph ?is the buzzer for still water only?
A midge nymph is much smaller these buzzers are generally a fair size.

Hi James, I use the Solarez Bone Dry which is a UV resin. There is no waiting time as the resin is dried completely with the UV torch.
