My wife and I sleep in the back of our 5th gen 4runner also. It be tight but in cold weather it is nice and cozy. We have to move stuff from the back to the front seats but we have that down. In the last year and a half we have spent over 40 nights in the back of the 4runner.

I agree with all you said. I sleep in my Toyota FJ all the time. I also have a gazelle but a T3 as im a single person so its big enough for me. But I love to sleep in the FJ. Its no set up time and its cozy. I use the passenger side as my kitchen set up and sometimes will bring a small pop up bathroom tent if needed. Its perfect.

I sleep inside my 4runner too with somewhat different sleeping configuration since I need to accommodate a dog crate next to my bed. I carry a rifle box with different gear and recovery ladders on a roof. I can still carry my kayak or SUP there. It wouldn't be possible with a roof tent unless something really short and light. Also, sleeping inside is quite stealthy. I can take a nap anywhere where setting up the rood tent would be suspicious.

I can totally relate to your set up Grumpy. I just bought a new Tacoma long bed and put a topper on it. I built a bed platform inside. I really like the idea of being out of the elements and the added security. A ground tent or roof top tent would need to air out and dry out after a rain or snow. And like you mentioned, less time setting up and taking down tents. Also sleeping in my topper, there's no worries of those pesky little critters (mice) who seemed to move right in not long after you set up your ground tent lol. I also have a roof rack/basket on top of my topper and plan utilize that area for gear. 👍

For me there were a few negatives of a RT that sat above giving up the roof space.
      1. The weight. Lots tossed up on top gives a weird weight balance.
      2. Taking it off when you need to just isn’t that easy.
      3. Honestly the price VS practicality just isn’t worth it. Are you really willing to spend a few grand to sleep up on your vehicle compared to just a few hundred to pop up a tent on the ground?

Also rooftop tent will weight down your car more. Sleeping inside you’re already safe from elements, and other things.

Makes sense to me. I like the screens for the windows. Love the awning too. If I was setting my 4RUNNER for camping I would have the bed on the passenger side with my fridge on the driver's side. I think then a person could recline the drivers seat for sleeping and a spouse could use the bed. I haven't proven that concept but that is my idea.

    • @TheGrumpyGobbler

I've got a sleeping platform in my 2000 4Runner and it is way more comfortable than sleeping on the ground, and much dryer than sleeping in a tent in the rain. Rooftop tents also reduce fuel economy pretty drastically, due to the increased drag. The weight that high also raises your center of gravity and can get the vehicle "tippy"...kind of scary on vehicles that are usually already lifted.

I think rooftop tents are a necessity on short wheelbase vehicles like jeeps, and have been somewhat cargo culted onto other vehicles where they make less sense. The truly instant setup of an interior platform - just pull over and you're ready to go - and storm worthiness that outweighs any tent-based setup are really hard to ignore. It does require you to exercise some self-control in terms of what you bring, you can't just stuff the vehicle full to bursting with cargo, which is another reason I think some folks have struggled and ended up bolting on a rooftop tent. But for gas mileage, weight distribution, stealth, convenience, a well-built interior platform is hard to beat.

For protection, sleeping inside the vehicle is the only option. Critters that can get you on the ground can climb ladders. Then there's the whole thing about needing to take a leak in the middle of the night. At least from the vehicle, if you stumble out, it's not that far. :))

I’m currently sleeping in the back of my 4Runner. I cannot open the back hatch so I struggle to get out a side door. I’m about to solve that with a switch kit mod. I’ve also found it extremely difficult to get into the front seat from the back. Perhaps impossible if the front passenger seat is full of gear, which it usually is. Toyota is coming out with a hybrid 4Runner. Toyota hybrid vehicles typically allow you to leave the the heat or AC on for hours. Heat shouldn’t be needed if you have a warm sleeping bag, but the AC is very efficient. The AC doesn’t run off of the engine, it uses the electricity from the big battery and then turns on the engine every fifteen minutes or so to recharge the battery. I might wait for a hybrid 4Runner so I can get better gas mileage.

    • @TheGrumpyGobbler
      @TheGrumpyGobbler  Před rokem +2

I would imagine that with the new 4Runner being a hybrid, there will be less space inside to sleep. The new Sequoia loses a lot of space because of the batteries. I would certainly like being more efficient, but not at the cost of space.

As a solo hiker/backpacker and love off grid campsites vs the frontline campgrounds, and after extensive research, I got a 2020 LC heritage edition because it has no 3rd row seats. Comfort of RV vs freedom, I think I made right choice. Since I can’t do it myself, I had guys put two platforms. One is for a bed and my solar battery fits under yet I have enough spaces for plastic ens under. Other half, they made a flat bed just to even out the floor and my ICECO refrigerator toward the back. I can sit up during the night if needed and I can use it as 2nd sleeping platform when my husband is with me. I carry an extra sleeping pad from Sea to Summit. I don't camp and there are few things less comfortable than sleeping in a passenger vehicle during a humid northeastern U.S. summer, however, on my fall and winter road trips, I just recline my driver's seat and get a very decent night's sleep. Agree with it all. I built a platform for my dogs and I to sleep on when travelling between Idaho and Wisconsin several times each year, and it works great. I'd highly recommend the rear hatch switch mod for the 4Runner if you're going to do this. Makes window, hatch, and door lock management so much easier. I don't have remote start, but that would also be incredibly handy from the sleeping quarters.
Another great thing about sleeping inside your vehicle is that it's low key. On the outside, it just looks like a parked car. No stickers, minimal exterior mods, just looks basically stock. I feel it makes me less of a target. Gas stations, police, etc all ignore me. That's very handy when sleeping in populated areas and saves a ton on hotels.

@@TheGrumpyGobbler the handy part is not having to crawl up front to turn the key to roll the window. I opted for 3 flush mount switches. Keeps it low key and clean with nothing sticking out that can be broken off. I enter/exit thru the hatch, so it really helps there, since I can open it without having to roll down the window and reach outside. It's been a real handy mod for me personally, and the guy that sells the parts was great to work with. Can't recommend him enough.

I just went on a 3-week trip in May-June 2022, sleeping inside my 4Runner - it was my first such trip. I got a 25" wide trifold foam mattress, which it worked great. My 4Runner has the sliding rear cargo deck, which provides a perfectly flat sleeping surface. If you don't have that, it would be easy to level the floor with plywood or foam sheeting. It was pretty cozy, and worked well most of the time. I was staying only one night, maybe two, in each location.
BUT - I found I was doing too much time driving and not enough relaxing and enjoying the area. Being a photographer, I should be spending more time in each location to get familiar with the lighting and have more chance of getting some good shots. Also, I felt trapped in the vehicle when it rained or was very cold. So next time, I plan to bring a tent with me, set up a base camp and spend at least 3 nights in each destination. A tent wouldn't take up that much more space in the truck, and would give me another option. I will still keep my current setup so I can stop overnight at rest areas and such. In bear areas, I could just sleep inside the vehicle, although I don't think bear attacks happen often enough to worry about. I am trying to coax my wife into coming with me, so a tent (and probably some cots) will be needed for sure. So - bottom line: less driving, more camping and hiking.
I really try to minimize the amount of stuff I bring. The vehicle gets full pretty quickly and I found I didn't need most of the junk I brought. I did end up buying a lawn chair at an REI so I didn't have to sit at picnic tables (if in fact there were picnic tables). I eat simple, mostly dehydrated food which doesn't need refrigeration. I'll stop at a restaurant once in a while to indulge myself in a good meal, but I got used to eating light, and even lost 8 pounds! I learned to pee into a plastic urinal so I didn't have to get up several times at night.
Having an awning is a nice idea. I rigged up a simple tarp with a couple of telescoping poles - honestly I didn't use it much but I think it would be good to have if you're out in the summer heat and sun, with no trees or shade. I'll probably get a better awning that is quicker to set up and take down when you are just passing through. Check out the new Kammok Crosswing awning, which will be available in November 2022. Sets up and takes down in 5 seconds or less - literally!
I don't think I'll get a rooftop tent, for a couple of reasons. First, I am getting old and it isn't as easy to climb up and down off the roof. Also, it would still be too confining. I bought a 6 - person ground tent which is tall enough for me to stand up in. With a comfortable chair, I could spend several hours inside reading or sleeping if the weather went bad. And having the rooftop tent attached to the vehicle means you'd have to take it down every time you went out on an excursion from your base camp. I guess if you are spending just one night in each location it might make sense, but even for that, I don't see much advantage compared to sleeping inside the vehicle.
    Happy trails!

I do have a Gazelle T4 if I decide I want a base camp or the wife comes with me.
I'm a little strange and rather like being in the 4Runner when it's raining (I'm really the opposite of claustrophobic). I also like just sitting under the awning and watching it pour. My awning is really easy to setup and take down, but really only use it in the rain or snow.

Excellent video and I agree that sleeping in the 4Runner is the way to go. I’m sort of a low budget traveler, so I haven’t invested in the expensive roof rack and awning. But, I have figured out flexible methods to make my 4Runner work for me based on various scenarios. If I’m long distance traveling and overnighting in a Walmart/Cracker Barrel parking lot (with permission, of course), I just park and slide into the back, put up the nightshades, and sleep peacefully (most of the time). If I,m leisurely gunkholing thru various sites, I will set up a tarp attached to my roof rack to provide shade and cover from the rain. Finally, if I spending a few days at the same site, I will set up my Napier SUV tent that attaches directly to the back of the 4Runner with a sleeve that allows direct access to my sleeping area in the back of the vehicle. I will also set up the tarp on the side of the vehicle so I can sit outside to drink my coffee and enjoy the view. So, I think I have complete flexibility for any situation. It works for me.

There is also a 20% coupon so you get another almost $15 off. So...that makes this mattress $59!!!! Not bad. Now, I actually just bought this mattress and I'm about 6 ft. and 210 lbs so I kinda sink into it alot...so I plan to use it with a Nemo Tensor Insulated air pad underneath. The Nemo Tensor is almost exactly the same size. Just a heads up to anyone that may want one.

Looking to get a 4runner 2021 trail edition.
Do you find that you use the a-trax feature and locking differentials? I live in canada and our logging roads in northern Ontario arent terrible to get up into and I'm not gonna be risking driving through really tough trails anyways. Do you think I can get by with just 4x4 and good tires? Or should I look into the off road trim for the added value.
Excellent setup sleeping in your car like that, the awning and platform bed combo looks like you're camping in style and comfort with very little setup. Is that a generator you use to power your fridge and if so, you mentioned leaving the fridge on all night does the generator noise not keep you up?

@@FNESSE You're welcome. I had seen Nick's platform build, but it sat too tall for me, I wanted a bit more headroom.

An SUV Tent might be your best option. After you've set it up a few times, I now do mine alone in about 15 minutes and quicker and easier if my wife is along for the outing. The 10 X 10 tent provides a living space protected from weather and mosquitoes and gear storage. At night, transfer the storage bins to empty my vehicle to the tent enclosure, inflate the air mattress and roll out the sleeping bag. The tent can be left with huge open windows with screens or closed for weather or privacy. Rear SUV hatch can be left open or closed or shut with remote control quickly if necessary if large predators stroll into camp. Tent is the NAPIER "Backroads" attached to Lincoln Navigator L. A good hybrid SUV / ground tent combination.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Tell me more about your window screens? DIY or purchased? I live in the buggy PNW and need some :)

thanks for the video. i checked your list of links to things you use (very helpful btw), but i didn't see a link for what kind of refrigerator/cooler that you use. i like the one you use because it looks like a good size and isn't too tall. thanks in advance :-)

Hello, the refrigerator I have is not available anymore, but here is the link to it so you can get the dimensions:

The reason I got this one was exactly because it wasn't too tall.

I believe I did hear that she did that. I don't even keep smelly food in my car when I camp.

      Thank you!
I have both the 500 and 1000 Jackery's. I tend to use the 500 in winter and the 1000 in summer.
The fridge is a Aspenora (think it's a Chinese knock-off). It actually works really well, but they are not available anymore. I am now trying out the RV45D by SetPower because it has a freezer. I only have 1 trip on it so far.
