    Basque also known as Euskara, is a language spoken by Basques and others of the Basque Country, a region that straddles the westernmost Pyrenees in adjacent parts of northern Spain and south-western France. Linguistically, Basque is a language isolate (unrelated to any other existing languages). The Basques are indigenous to, and primarily inhabit, the Basque Country. The Basque language is spoken by 28.4% (751,500) of Basques in all territories. Of these, 93.2% (700,300) are in the Spanish area of the Basque Country and the remaining 6.8% (51,200) are in the French portion.

    Basque people have similar genetics to pre-indoeuropean populations, aka, Western Hunter Gatherers (which got there tens of thousands of years earlier than the Celts/Romans) + Early European Farmers (which got there a few thousand years earlier). That being said, it cannot be assumed that the rest of Europe had reasonably similar languages, since the WHGs had been living there for tens of times longer than has passed since the Romans got to Spain, so the local drifting would have been much larger - especially since there weren't large and fast communication networks like in the classical, medieval and Renaissance eras, meaning more isolation and therefore easier drifting.
    Now, the EEFs may have had relatively similar languages within their own group since they split from Caucasian Hunter Gatherers as a block and migrated across Europe in a relatively short timeframe, but the amount to which the new language of the interbred new populations would have taken from the native WHGs versus the immigrating EEFs must have been a pretty random local phenomenon.

    • @the569
      @the569 Před rokem +4

      So they’re not related at all, but I think there r a few things which may make them sound a bit similar (not an expert)
      1- euskara and castillian have the exact same vowels (a,e,i,o,u) , back when castillian was a Vulgar Latin dialect it would’ve had long and short vowels, now it only has short ones like euskara. This was due to influence since Castille is close to where they speak euskara (in comparison to other parts of the Iberian peninsula which were further away and have other vowels)
      2- euskara and Spanish both have rr which is quite distinctive
      3-it’s possible that now adays many euskara speakers also speak Spanish, maybe even as a first language, so maybe that affected the accent. Maybe thousands of years ago monolingual euskara speakers sounded very different

    • @kars28123
      @kars28123 Před rokem +4

      I think it's because basically everyone basque is also fluent/native in spanish. It's hard to keep separate accents and I guess they merged with generations... • @shutapp9958
      @shutapp9958 Před rokem +1

      It’s probably because they all use Castilian/Spanish more than Basque. Even the letter “j” was pronounced like Spanish, instead of the Portuguese/Romanian/French “j” sound, or like an American “y”, or an Italian “gi”. That alone shows you a lot. Non-native speakers probably just sticks with their native set of consonants.

    • @montimuros2837
      @montimuros2837 Před rokem +7

      Basque influenced the formation of the Spanish language, especially phonetics. If you listen to old speakers from the French side, you'll notice they too have an accent that's very similar to that of Spanish. That being said, it's also true that Basque speakers from the south tend to have a more Spanish sounding accent due to recent influence from the Spanish language.

      As a French person while it's clear they'll never get independence as countries don't just give away land to random groups even when they ask nicely, but I do think they deserve way more recognition from our government, which does an extrmely poor job overall at caring about any minorities in the country. Basically the way France is politically designed is around Paris, the rest being treated as spare parts.

    • @pyrenaea3019

      I'm Basque and I feel well in Spain. But there are some Spaniards who think that everyone in the Basque Country is part of ETA, and that saddens me as a Basque.
      As in Spain is perfectly understandable that a person identifies as a Basque and Spaniard at the same time, in France it's pretty weird and they are probably going to think that you support independence.
      I don't feel wrong at all, but I think that globalization and massive immigrations are the worst problems for us now. Many foreigners living in Spain think that I speak gibberish when I speak Basque and ask me unrespectfully to switch my language, which I won't.

I don't support independence, I support national freedom

    • @DoraEmon-xf8br
      @DoraEmon-xf8br Před rokem +2

      I’m a Basque from the North/French side of the Basque country.
      I don’t want independance though more freedom in education and language policies are imo more than welcome in here.
      I’m not completely at ease with how the French state treated the Basque and other cultural/language minorities in France. I don’t like France’s centralism that much either.
      But overall, there’s no conflict in my mind between «being Basque and French».
      I don’t even feel that close to other Southern Basques besides that we share a common root. I mean, they’re not complete strangers to me, but it’s not like we are brothers to be reunited at all cost either. Spending time in the Southern part is cool and all but it’s not like I feel home there much more than I would in Catalunya or Alsace.
      On a more political point of view, most «pro-independent» parties are pretty radical and keen on calling everybody who disagrees with them as «fake Basques», «faxistak», «traitors» or «brainwashed»… I really don’t want to live in an independent country with this kind of people at the head of the government.
      But that’s just a personal opinion.

      Etxea is the house. Etxe bat is a house. -Ak is plural definitive.

Without the batua standard, euskara would be almost extinct. Üskaz alkareki mintzo ditzagün. Euskaraz elkarekin mintzatu dezagun. Let's speak in basque together.

      @noble crow Sino-Caucasian macro family? Isn't it a language isolate? So Basque has a 'family'? What are the languages related to Basque? What is the connection between Basque and these languages?

    • @wintherr3527
      @wintherr3527 Před rokem +3

      @noble crow great!
      you talk as if you're speaking about established facts when it's all about:
      "a PROPOSED language family that includes WIDELY SEPARATED language groups spoken in the Northern Hemisphere: Sino-Tibetan languages, Yeniseian languages, Burushaski and North Caucasian languages in Asia; Na-Dené languages in North America; and the Vasconic languages from Europe (including Basque)."
      I would be very, very curious about ANY evidence of a slight resemblance whatsoever between Chinese and Basque!!
      From what I've read, Basque will remain as the European language isolate for a looong time still!

    • @tonialbert333

      It is quite rather the opposite, Spanish 5 vowel phonology in between others is due to the mix of the Latin language exposed in Basque areas

      @@mortenoconnell7977 Yes. The Old Castilian(language that the modern Spanish was developed) born in La Rioja/Province of Álava/Araba, zone that in ancient times was basque speaker, receiving a strong basque influence, like the 5 vocals and the same pronunciation for B and V.

    • @ibnenkigalileo9256
      @ibnenkigalileo9256 Před rokem +2

      This idea that Basque influenced Castilian is a myth. For the simple reason that modern Castilian phonology is very different from the phonology of the 15th century when Spanish had a pronunciation closer to Occitan. Spanish basques nowadays have a Spanish accent in basque and French basque speakers have a French accent in basque for the simple reason that Castilian and French are by far the dominant languages in either country

    Also mention that language has become politicised, it is used by separatist political groups as a weapon to separate, movements that originated in the 19th century and were promoted by the upper classes at a time when the Spanish empire was in collapse.
