As part of fleet renewal and expansion initiated in the 2010s, SMRT Buses procured MAN NL323F (or MAN A22) buses between 2011 and 2016.
These buses are low-floor, wheelchair-accessible and environmentally-friendly, being compliant with the latest Euro 5 (or Euro V) emission standards back then. Buses are bodied by Gemilang Coachworks with the MAN Lion’s City Hybrid bodywork.
The move to procure MAN A22 buses follow the successful evaluation of SMB138Y, a demonstrator unit operated for two years. Between the Mercedes-Benz Citaro and the MAN A22, the latter was eventually chosen for bulk orders, also called the Production Batch.
With 734 units acquired over three batches, the MAN A22 is the largest volume order of a single bus model in TIBS/SMRT history. Its distinctive exterior appearance and widespread deployment made it a defining addition to SMRT’s varied bus fleet. More MAN A22 buses would later be procured by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) in the Euro 6 specification and a different bodywork design.
Under the Bus Contracting Model, these MAN A22 (Euro 5) buses were also leased to Tower Transit Singapore, SBS Transit and Go-Ahead Singapore. One bus (SMB3075A) was retrofitted to an electric bus, and re-registered as SG3100M.
In 2020, twenty buses were converted into dedicated COVID-19 patient transport vehicles, known as COMET MAXI (COVID-19 Multi-Passenger Enhanced Transporter).
Overview of MAN NL323F (Euro V)
In 2010, as SMRT’s fleet of Mercedes-Benz O405 buses approached retirement age, there was a need for a large-scale replacement of 12-metre buses that were wheelchair-accessible and environmentally friendly. That same year, SMRT took delivery of a Mercedes-Benz Citaro demonstrator and a MAN A22 demonstrator for evaluation.
The MAN A22 demonstrator, registered SMB138Y, was fitted with the MCV Evolution bodywork from Egyptian bodybuilder MCV (Manufacturing Commercial Vehicles). The bus entered service in December 2010 and delivered satisfactory performance during its one-year trial period. It was also favoured over SMB136C (SMRT’s Citaro demonstrator) as a suitable bus for large-scale fleet renewal and expansion. SMB138Y was taken out of revenue service in 2012. The demonstrator is covered in depth in this article.
In 2011, SMRT announced purchases of 200 MAN A22 buses, this time with a MAN Lion’s City Hybrid bodywork manufactured and assembled by Gemilang Coachworks. In 2013, another 202 units were ordered. A third batch announced in April 2014 for 332 units were registered from July 2014 to Oct 2016. Thus, a total of 734 Euro V production batch units were procured by SMRT; although some units were diverted to the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) midway through delivery.
Buses are registered in the following number ranges in consecutive numerical order. Nearly all buses bear the SMB-prefix, although later units bore the SG-prefix as Singapore was transitioning towards the Bus Contracting Model.
Batch 1 (200 Buses): SMB189A - SMB354P, SMB3001M - SMB3034T
Batch 2 (202 Buses): SMB1301K - SMB1420A, SMB3035R - SMB3116R
Batch 3 (332 Buses): SMB1421Y - SMB1650C, SMB3117M - SMB3169M, SG1700U - SG1748H
Most MAN NL323F (Euro 5) buses share similar technical specifications, as summarized in the table below:

90% elderly are stuck in this bus ! Bus captain of SBS 6562G is very helpful ,kudos to him ❤
Good service, kind man .
好榜样❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nooooo the only two A22 E5 B2 and one is already broken!
when SG5594H wants to change lanes the Honda Vezel does not want SG5594H to change lanes
好样的 继续为人民服务
I suggest using a tow truck to send the bus to the main company for inspection and repairs before the bus can be in service.
@@andyng3666 But it wasn't a breakdown, the bus stopped there because the front and rear doors cannot be opened.
Or using the back door
@@KevinLim-rj4vu Rear means "back" or "behind". I know but still, the back doors on the bus couldn't be opened.
@@Vannaderina3142studiosSGT yeah I didn’t notice that before my bad
I feel bad for SG1720L
Finally this happened. Last mth encountered the same on 518. BC asked me board from rear door.
@@NMLE Nah
looks like near kallang mrt stn
correct SG1720L stopped at Aft Lor 1 Geylang
why they nvr put it out of service and dismount the passengers ... there was another bus service 12 double deck behind them @2:20
Yeah that's why. Double deck some more aiya......... Don't know why the driver never stopped by and get help from this poor BC....... Lucky the single deck driver come over and help...
@@MainEventIsh32 Yup I agree. The double deck Bus Driver of Service 12 should indeed have helped for a while.
@@itzdanish5614 The doors couldn't be opened, so the Bus Driver of the Mercedes-Benz Citaro eventually forced the doors to let passengers alight and take his bus.
this doors are air operated, if he stop the engine try to drain the air tank like spamming the brakes the doors will loosen as air pressure is lost.
@@BLOODjack143 Yes. You're absolutely correct.
Only one...all bus dont have.... Only have Off service , bus Number... But No breakdown words
12:47 🤔
I saw it too....... 🤔
Very kind person ahem ahem😅
NOOOOO MY REP :C
☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️
I don't know what is wrong with the door?
@@youngshine7697 The door couldn't be opened despite them trying their best. Probably it was the door mechanism that caused a problem with the doors.
Bus Captain wear crocs .....
Misleading caption. Use proper usage of words. Like it's an emergency case !
@@bennysamuelkoh9463 WDYM its misleading? Its not an emergency? Doors were stuck and unable to operate, the bus driver tried his best to open the doors but failed, so isn't this an emergency?
Just turn off engine and the doors won't have power
@@LithHarbour Yes. But the engine was on at certain times of the video but the door couldn't be opened still.
@Vannaderina3142studiosSGT sbs will take back this services soon. Will be left with sbs, smrt, tts
@@LithHarbour We'll see how.
@@LithHarbour not likely. Go-Ahead has good staff handling. They need to stay. TTS is the one should go, it has too many bus accidents in their record compared to SBS, SMRT, GAS
faulty doors.
