Project Warthog EP 19: KLR650 Cooling System and Thermo-Bob Kit

- There are only 2 major systems in the way of this bike starting, or at least I hope, and the coolant system is one of those. Along side the radiator, hoses, overflow tank and the like, I’ll also be installing a Watt-man Thermo-Bob kit. Other than the Doohickey, the Thermo-Bob kit is probably the most important KLR650 Mod. According to Watt-Mans website, “Kawasaki cut corners in the KLR cooling system, and the Thermo-Bob modifies your cooling system to operate like automotive systems have for decades. In stock form, the KLR runs too cool when ridden in temps below about 80 - 85F. The cooler outside it is, the worse a stock bike is. Plus, the factory cooling system relies on surges of cold coolant every 30 seconds at the bottom of the cylinder to control engine temperature… just look at the plots of actual measured temps.”
So if you are installing a big bore kit this is even more important. As I state in the video, it would be better if your electrical system is already installed at this point so if you are following along in the video series, you should do video 20 first.

Waiting for the continuation of this great series, im actually using this series to work on my own KLR650
Looking forward to seeing it finished..looks really good..just be careful with the overflow tube..it looks close to the exhaust header..maybe use some heat wrap or something to cover it..
Hey, thanks and you are right. When I do the exhaust video you'll see I decided to do just that and wrap the header! Good catch.

Have you ever posted the headlight dash and windscreen setup?
Glory be to God in the highest! So, what i gleaned from that video is listening is just as important as watching. Are you implying the wiring harness should have been the next step? Before cooling system. I guess it really doesn't matter if you enjoy putting things on then take them off and putback on again. Lol like me.
