Self-Reflection - Key to True Realization

  • The question is to know the entire ocean, you just have to know one drop of water. Somewhere from a deeply philosophically angle, there is truth to it, but you won’t know the depth of the ocean from a drop. To know that depth, the plumbness of the ocean, you have to take a dive. Each individual is a drop and we are so focussed on ourselves most of the time especially with these self-help books that teach you that you must live fully, you must live for yourself, you must be happy , you must not care about other people, you must not think about what they are thinking and so on. All these false affirmations don’t take you too far.
To know the ocean somewhere perfect stillness of the mind is needed. If I am looking at a reef and there are beautiful creatures swimming underneath, the stones and the sight to behold but I can’t see if (a) the water is muddy and (b) it’s being stirred. I need the stillness of the water to be able to see what Is underneath.

As a Bengali, I enjoyed eating non-veg food since childhood. While spiritually I understood that this wasn't a compassionate move towards animals, but I did not know how not to give in to temptations and to break away from that years of conditioning of eating non-veg. Then I had the opportunity to hear this talk live last year and when Swamiji said "All pleasures eventually will taste the same anyway.. so I may as well pick and choose.. I may as well be mindful about where I want to invest my time and what I actually want to enjoy", it made a deep impact on me. He was speaking on a different context but those words stayed with me. After coming back home, I started eating mindfully to understand why I am so attached to the food that I am eating (I specifically loved eggs and fish-batter fry a lot). What happened was that the more I ate mindfully, trying to savour each and every bite, the more I started to feel, "whoa, there is nothing so great in this non-veg food that I can not live without". Within 1 month or so, I quit non-veg food entirely. I never thought I will be able to quit eggs, but I did. I do not feel any urge to eat non-veg anymore. In fact, I am discovering amazing vegetarian dishes that I never opted for earlier.
    Takeaway:
Such is the power of His words that if we are mindful to it, we can break years of conditioning that is pulling us down spiritually.
P.S: I am not always mindful to everything that He is saying. And that is why I am still me. 👻

I can relate to this, but I have a different point of view. I feel the need to stop eating meat has to come from inside. Lot of people try to do things because they get into spirituality but fail to understand that it's better leave it slowly rather than really wanting to eat and stopping oneself. One realized master told me that once you are in this path and if one regularly meditates it happens internally after some point of time. For me it has happened for poultry meat, but I still do eat fish.
I understand yours is a case where you don't have a urge now, but not everyone is in that league. Just putting across my point on a different side. Take care.

This is pessimistic attitude towards life. We should not fear death and nor should we feel helpless and weak when death approaches, but like a warrior who have fought life and it's wavering tribulations with pride and honour, we should transcend death and regain our original energetic form which is like god. So, death is just like a transition for us to get a eternal energetic form like god. We don't need to witness life and it's vivid walks, we need to take active participation in it and if anything is wrong, adamant, unethical we should strive to change it with unflinching determination because as swami vivekanand has said we can crush a mighty mountain with invincible determination of mind. While living in this life we should learn to live it in highest ethical and moral principles and try to accumulate as much merits as possible to get place in the highest heaven which is eternal.

@@ArunitaSarkar To realize what matters in life while we are alive we need to be wise and practical. I have read dozens of book ranging from philosophy, spiritualuality and religion and none of them have advised to be submissive in life and accept life as it is but they have acknowledged the fact that the individual soul has infinite potential which should never be in any kind of uncertainty as shown in the video that life is uncertain and not in our hands fully and we should be a witness in life. I am not criticizing his philosophy at all it's just that it's a bit passive rather than bold like that of advait vedanta.
