I'm a 15 year old Istanbulite. These kids are from like the middle-high class, definitely a privileged part.
And I'm not blaming them or anything for being economically well off, they seem pretty cool, but the problem for me is that I don't feel like this represents the majority :/
They should have visited Bağcılar or Esenyurt lmao
@Светлана Павлова Esenyurt being the most populated district of Istanbul, it would definitely represent a big part in my opinion. The majority? No. I'm just saying they should have included some people not that economically well off.
These are not that wealthy rich kids tbh.Seems pretty middle class to me,they are just a bit show off.Nothing crazy...
@@efecelik8931 they are not a middle class. they definitely belong to a higher class if you consider the economical circumstances in turkey.
@Boba Fett actually not. there are a lot of people between lower and middle classes in istanbul and if you compare it to the east actually there are not any too high differences.
I was about to believe this video, than I remembered that I am a 16 year old teenager in Istanbul, and go back to my actual life.
Haha aynen
What is it like for you?
@@hanimmohammed2169 dangerous af considering at least one women is getting murdered every day, gotten more dangerous lately because we had withdrew from the İstanbul convention, the education system is doing its best to compete us with one and other and not actually teach us anything, but play with our psychology instead, the economy is getting worse and worse so we have to think twice before buying anything, and the life is expensive as fuck.
But I've heard people love istanbul very much. I was thinking of joining a university there. Also, about how dangerous it is, i think everywhere is like that.
@@hanimmohammed2169 I love İstanbul, don't get me wrong, but the current government is not making living there easy for a highschool student. I am also starting uni this year, and I sure will be applying to few universities in here. But still, if you're gonna come here, come knowing that that's not how everyday day life is in here for everybody. Only a little minority gets to live like that.
Everyone in the comments is talking about how not every 16 year old is artsy and sportive but like.. what did you expect them to film??? Teenagers smoking after school?? Going to the mall? Lmao if that’s what you wanna watch maybe prefer vlogs or something. They’re trying to capture interesting parts from the youth, if painting and playing basketball are too unrealistic activities for you maybe question your own life instead of theirs..
Lizzy Grant some sort of representation of kids who are lost or lack ambition are not unrealistic at all. In fact, that’s the most accurate representation, and what this shows is heavily biased. It shows only a particular part of Istanbul and a particular socioeconomic perspective. That’s a balanced outlook. This just seems like propaganda.
@@avindyap279 i see your point but i wouldn't say "propoganda". I mean as a person living in İstanbul,i can't say this is realistic or sth but kind of they're trying to show what's more interesting. I'm not saying every teenager is artsy and super cool but there are a few. Sooo she has a point.
Facts.
The only reason that you are saying this is propaganda is because it doesn’t fit your “Turkish” narrative of backwards stupid Middle Eastern people. This is not propaganda this is reality.
@@SD-ft5xj Spot on. The general misconception -to which, the way the country makes the global news contributes handsomely- about Turkey is that it's way more middle-eastern, religion oriented and well... boring than it really is.
Turkey is a modern republic with beautiful landscapes, arts, an amazingly diverse and rich culture and all things that come with it. It's just... going through a rough patch right now, if you will...
It would be really nice if you could do a video like this for any African country’s city, like Lagos, Nairobi, Dar es salaam etc. we never get to see the youth culture of such places in mainstream media. It would be really refreshing.

not the most accurate representation. 16 in Istanbul means judgement, one way or another you have to be political, your status, education, belief and sexuality all become targets on your back in a highly polarized community. You have to find yourself and voice under an outdated and corrupted authority. All these kids are at the more liberal standing point. Also the headscarf is one of the biggest reasons for conflict in the country. As religion and corruption has for so long seemed connected. Majority are Muslims, but once you fully practice Islam you are associated with the disliked conservative movement and the Middle Eastern culture that has for so long contradicted the vision of the Turkish Republic. You should have interviewed kids from different high schools. Uskudar American and Robert for the more liberal and complex yet privileged kids, Saint Joseph or Saint Benoit for the old Turkish-European ecole and Kadıköy Anadolu or Cağaloğlu for the middle class that finds independent and ideals in their freedom. Also one of the most beatiful cities in the world, com'on the scenery could be so much better...

To be honest, I feel like my country's teenagers have been represented badly in this video. Living in Istanbul is more than just what you are interested in, what your hobbies are. I feel like they have been talking about themselves more than the impact on their lives that comes from living in Istanbul. Istanbul is not a city where everyone doesn't have hobbies and get to live a life like that. The pressure on teenagers comes from the education system would be so lovely to see. I'd love to see how different some certain areas are. Istanbul is beautiful cause it contains both and teaches you, shows you the different perspectives of life.
I know some of these people in person and i can say that we are the more privileged part of the city. You could have shown other aspects of Turkish teenagers. This video is just limited by teens with the same liberal socio-economic background.
You are right, when they want to show on social media a country, or how people live they always show the best that they have. It is obvious not all turkish people live this way. In all countries there is poverty and many other problems.

i think you should get out of your house more... and meet new people. you'll see many of the new generation dislike current politics and want a country that they can express themselves fully
Turks in Istanbul is getting more secular but Istanbul itself is becoming more middle eastern due to the huge number of Arab refugees and tourists
Oh I agree with you all, the younger generation is definitely more secular and everything. My point was regarding how the city and the general mentality has changed over the past 16 years (towards a more Middle Eastern look & mentality), but that 16 year old kid in the video thinks it's more Western than it ever was, simply because he has no idea what it was like before he was born! (To think, he's never seen a different political party be in charge ever since he was born)
this representation of istanbul is as accurate as Turkish dramas .
nope
Yep
but the privileged minority is real
Oh here we go again, rich kids, iD needs to stop to represent teenagers like this, these guys do not represent anyone
As a Turkish i can understand that they r not that rich. They r just regular kids.
Wtf they are not rich
As a turkish teenager ı actually can understand your comment because in the video there 16 type of different teenager but maybe just 3 of them you can see in istanbul ı think in the video at least 8-10 type of them you can’t see its not that common and ı think that not right ı think whoever made this video just wanted to show you what it wants to be a teenager
Sorry for my bad english
They are like children of a middle-income family. They are not rich
As 22 year old in Istanbul i can say probably ballerina girls and 2 kids at gym are in upper middle class as income but others in middle class.
Wtf most of these teenagers are not even good turkish speakers. I love i-d but this could've been handled a lot better. They could have talked about how hard it is to be homosexual, how children are influenced horribly by their parents, how is education in Turkey (education in Turkey limits social activites and therefore you can't even focus on your hobbies that much). I know that these videos aren't meant to bash cities & I also love being a teen in Istanbul but be fucking brave and spread out actual information.
What!! only one of them does not speak turkish.

I am pretty sure that almost everyone would agree on how distant this video is from representing our young people living in Istanbul and Turkey in general. But since I've been following this channel for so long I can tell that I am kinda used to this "politic" attitude of yours which you take by introducing the world from a barren perspective of a tiny majority. exactly. i've just watched a couple of 1616 videos and i also noticed their concept. they pick relatively an unrealistic minority from every city and serve them to us. of course they would show us unique personalities but when you go deeper i don't find them - that - unique at all. almost like you hear the same thing but in different languages (aynı bla bla'nın laciverti misali) i remember one comment saying there is no diversity in their videos. there really isn't. agree you about the turkish part too. all i hear is lack of depth and the struggle of expression.

Why would you interview a syrian refugee? That girl with headscarf is not Turkish?
The video title says what it is like to live in Istanbul as a 16-year-old, therefore the requirements are specific to age and place of residence, not nationality. It is not exclusive to Turkish citizens. The refugees' experiences are worth hearing, so that we can see the reality of Istanbul in a larger scale.

I'm from Turkey and this is not typical 16 yo lives in here. Not everyone has the opportunities these teens have. I would say 5-10% of the teens have the funds to support their artistic and sportive interests and live freely. Others (70-80%) just wanna go into decent university and earn enough money to live. Unfortunately our politics and government sucks and they are the reason (and the people elect them) why this beautiful country going through difficult times.

It is a normal situation because it is a fashion channel. Do you think that they will choose boring ones? If you watch other videos you would understand that. They found upper middle class teens who have a hobby and it's so boring I'm sure they are nice people but the video is just... not it
most lgbt teens in turkey are closeted so...
I am 21, and i can assure you that this type of people exist. Everywhere in the world, as long as there is Internet. We live in world where globalism had never been more prevalent before. Especially in countries with suppressive authorities youth tends to be more effected by global trends. This is actually a subconscious behavior that allows them to express their will and want of more freedom. This is called reaction formation as defined by Freud. These kids are a part of an ideologically suppressed community. Once allowed(funds, family's support) they will form an opposite reaction the forcefully imposed ideology. Yet most of the teenager in Turkey are not allowed(family's restrictions and others causes...) to form such reaction thus bringing us to the point that video is both right and wrong on behalf of depicting teens of Istanbul.
Well said
I'M a teenager in istanbul and and i cant understand why this video is not relatable for you.they just love animals plays basketball and go on a date like every other teenager and every financial class. You only want to see what you see in media

ezio It was a question of where do you think it will be, but where do you want it to be after all.
Ni_cat I don’t have one. If you want to capture people you should make your content as interesting as possible and as relevant to your audience as possible. i-D has figured out that by presenting 16 year olds on the middle to upper class they can gain more viewers.
Moreover, most of their viewers probably fall under that bracket too so being able to relate to the person in the video boosts interest too.
These are not interesting Turkish teens, believe me there are so many other profiles that they could’ve picked. Maybe we could’ve at least expected them to be a bit fashionable or different in terms of style but every single teen in this video feels quite ordinary. Of course they are going to cherry pick teens, but at least pick people that would stand out.
Ilayda Kulaksizoglu i-D is a business. They’ll do what gains them the most profit.

Comment section is full of Turkish people that this video doesn't represent them. As a Turk, I need to say that of course 10 or more people can not represent the whole country, you shouldn't expect this. But I think this video shows that 16-year-olds are in need of expressing themselves, they are probably from upper-middle-class, so they have the money to do whatever they want. Still, it doesn't change the common need: expressing yourself.

no video of this series actually represents the whole teen generation of that city as we can read from the comments. they pick the kids that are “interesting” or stand out. They mainly choose the ones that are more privileged. Videos are made to get attention and views, it’s understandable ..

For a second, I thought that this was a different place but not my country. I also saw some comments about how privileged teenagers they are. And I kind of agree with this. I also wanna say that, in my opinion this video shouldn't have any politic messages or anything. Idk why is everybody trying to force others to support the one that they love? The video was supposed to be about a 16 year old's life in İstanbul not only his politic thoughts.
this video had the potential to be enchanting but it’s not, which is sad. there are so many beautiful views that could be used. Istanbul is very crowded and full of original and creative people. the video is not religion based which I’m very happy about. because I assure you, that is not even near to what Istanbul is.
I have been waiting for this video for so long and let me say some stuff. Eğitim kalitesinin önemi her geçen gün artmakta. Evrensel düzeyde başarılı olmak istiyorsak kendimize yatırım yapmak en mantıklı seçenek gibi duruyor.
Honestly, imo, I think this video is completely fine. And I'll tell you why. First of all, I'm not Turkish nor have I ever been to Turkey. So I can't complain about the lack of diversity and social classes amongst these kids. That's for the Turkish peeps to do.
What I will say is that these videos will obviously be rather shallow and "pathetically" made simply because it's a fashion/arts/music (idkhow to classify this) magazine. They want to highlight the good parts. Hasn't fashion/pop culture taught us that? All it wants is the glam and glitz. If we really wanted to know what it's like as a 16 yo in general, someone can make a short movie about it. Would be a lot more impactful, especially if it's local people who make it. More perspectives would be involved.
And, I think that it's nice to know that there are some people who will push for change. Whether they're rich or poor shouldn't matter as much because they do wish for change. That's all that should matter.
i hope they make skateparks and skate shops in turkey soon
i like this series but i wish it was more representative of people from lower income households
Do: What's it like being a 16 year old in Nis, Serbia
Okay let me tell you what it is actually like to be an average 16 year old in İstanbul today part by part:
1: I agree with that one.
2: it is true that most teenagers hate the current government but this is not all of them there are very religous teenagers still supporting the current government. Plus the teenagers that hate the government(even tough they are right) mostly mob mentality idiots who take all their political advice from twitch streamers.
3: I agree with that one
4: Most of the teenagers today never go outside and they cant get friends outside of computer games. Plus the current education system wont allow you to do anything else from school if you want to be successful and go to a top university. Therefore it is really tough to do sth else like programming in your spare time.
5: 90% of us dont have boyfriends and girlfriends and only the most attractive people in highschool date with each other.
6: agree
7: agree
8: nothing to say abput that but know that only 0.0001% of people do art
9: Most of us are skinny fat and just dream and procrastinate going to the gym. So congrats to this disciplined guy
10: nothing to say about that.
11: this is actually true a lot of girls dont wear it only for family reasons like it used to be people can now wear jeans and a hijab and no one judges you.
12: this is 30% of the teenager population and people who are above 90 iq hate the app.
13: As a teenager whose family is middle class you cant afford to have dreams like that. And your family forces you to choose realistic and safe jobs. SO probabaly that girl is rich.
14: nothing to say about that.
15: The party CHP spesificly does propaganda to the youth to get their votes I am not saying it is bad I am just saying this is what it is. (Just like AKP doing propaganda to religious muslims) so the akbil move may not be that he cares about the youth so much.
16: The music culutre here consists mostly of trap that makes no sense or youtubers making songs and getting100m+ views.
bonus: living in istanbul you dont get to live the perks of living here because there is no time left from school and going to home. Anneni sikerim
İstanbul çok seviyorum. Çunku güzel😍💓.

I am Turkish and I didn't even understand what those guys mean... Beat that.
Being a 16 years old kid's like you are not even at the beginning of your life. You just started to have a conception of the things around you like art, music, religion, politics etc. Most people have to wait to turn 30 so they can make their way in their lives. So I'm assuming the ones who tend to judge the teenagers in this video are not adult also. I remember my high school years and I'm so regretful that I wasted my time instead of spending it on different things that actually matter. I feel like I postponed my life. This video doesn't claim that they show you the general perspective of whole youth in Turkey.
Next in Madrid pleasee
The only hijabi girl is not Turkish?
what about a what it like to be 16 during a pandemic around the world
Eating chips, drinking cola while watching a tv show you've watched before
Ps:Your bed hates you leave it alone for a second
People keep telling that this is not what are teens like but if you try to get to know them , you can see that this is really what are the teens like. Of course there are teens who are growing up in such bad places of İstanbul but there are kids like that all around ttthe world . so this is İstanbul , this is the original teens of İstanbul. But there are a bunch of thoughtless, empty teens too.
