Anti-Arab sentiment sweeps Turkey, home to world's largest refugee population • FRANCE 24 English

  • Turkey is home to more refugees than any other country in the world, with more than 3 million Syrians and 300,000 Iraqis. But as the years have gone by, many Turks believe these refugees have overstayed their welcome. Now, as the economic crisis in the country gets worse, attacks have begun to escalate, both rhetorically and physically. Our correspondents Ludovic de Foucaud, Shona Bhattacharyya and Hussein Asad report from Bolu, a city whose mayor wants all foreigners out of Turkey.

      1) in the 60is germany benefited from turkish workers, but so did the turkish. actually the countries of the guest workers wanted to send their people, because there were no jobs. same reason, why the anatolians later moved to istanbul in masses...
since the beginning of the 70is (oil price shock) there was no need for turkish migration in germany..but they still kept coming...why? see point 2.
      2) most of the turks arrived after the guest worker time. the whole thing was also a politacal deal between the overlord of germany the usa and their ally turkey. the turkish elites wanted to prevent a revolution and send their poor masses away to earn some money and the usa ordered germany to take in the turks. germany never wanted them. that is all written and published nowadays in studies from the german foreign office.

Moreover, the Turks who went to germany did not only work as workers, even the Turks in germany who found the vaccine against the Cowid virus, not the germans. It has contributed to Germany in many ways. Most of the Turks and the Turks there are people who adapt to Germany, know German well and have nothing to do with terrorism, but most of the refugees and asylum seekers who come to Turkey enter the country illegally. @@yaprakcetin5558 Hopefully Turks can decide for themselves what to about ErDOGan before it's too late. Brotherhood politics only lead one way, and it's not towards democracy or freedom. But my main point is still, if culturally different people arrive in your country and make it worse its not racist to say why, as long as you don't target the whole group. If you give someone a room in your house you expect them to behave according to the rules of the house. Btw I'm also Atheist. Is that a tough stance in Erdogan's Turkey?

@@stevenrichardson1843 ErDOGan uses the word atheist as an insult in political discourse all the time.
Whenever he gets a chance he insults Atheists “We’ve constructed a boulevard in Ankara. Despite who? Despite those leftists, those atheists. These are atheists, these are terrorists.
However, CHP (People’s Republican Party) calls them ‘our youngsters’.”
If he wins another election we are ABSOLUTELY DONE!!! There will be no secular Turkey we will be new Afganistan for sure. He is already helping Taliban :(
He is extremely uneducated he faked his university degree, most people don't even believe he has eveb a high-school diploma
His supporters are also just like him uneducated religious thugs living in rural areas.
As of right now though , I have to say one will face most likely no problems especially in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and mediterranean, aegean and marmara coastal areas.
For sure being an atheist in Turkey is much easier than being one in Iran or the Arab countries.
People don’t really attack you physically for your beliefs whereas in a place like Pakistan a mob killed a man because they felt he was an unbeliever, blasphemer.
So still, Turkey is liberal up to a point, but it doesn’t mean atheists feel as comfortable as an atheist in Dusseldorf, Paris, or Madrid.
Beside being an atheist , you just don't want to be a women, child and street dog in this country. That's my two cents.

Westerns cheer everytime their government destroys some country, but they never think about the repercussions. Instead it’s always “we’re the USA (or wherever), we’re the greatest, nobody tells us who we can’t overthrow!” Like during the run up to the 2003 Iraq war, France didn’t want to invade, so members of the US parliament voted to change the name of the cafeteria menu item from ‘French fry’ to ‘freedom fry,’ and the people cheered them on. If we are honest, most people would prefer to keep their homeland’s culture as intact as possible because it is our comfort zone. My thoughts about cultures and immigration have changed a lot over the years. I no longer believe in harmonious multiculturalism and I think tensions between humans will only grow as the world population keeps increasing. We should all respect different cultures but I don’t believe all cultures can cohabitate and blend easily. Some blend very well but others are doomed to clash. As much as we would like to appear sophisticated and civilized, we are still tribal in our DNA.

I'm not Turkish. But I stayed in Turkey for a long time because of my job. My observation is that the situation in Turkey is not about the Arabs, but rather that Erdogan is playing with Turkey's demographic structure due to his ideological obsessions. As far as I understand, Erdogan cannot make the regime change he wants with the Turks. Turks do not allow this. Erdoğan started importing citizens as a solution :) It may seem like an exaggeration, but he seriously does this and provides all kinds of support for them to stay. And the Turks are going crazy about this. I think after Erdoğan (if there is a place called Turkey left) everything will return to normal. The Turks I know have no problems with anyone.

They'd swear at you if you asked for a discount even if you felt that the price was a bit high. In the North, even if you did not buy after looking at 15 sarees, the shopkeeper is fine and will still smile. In the South, they will inform other shops that you are a time waster. Don't you think that's simplistic? Just because things have improved means every refugee can get a house, a job, etc. if they just move back. Moreover, socially the situation is still pretty dangerous for a lot of groups in Iraq; I read an article about after the takeback of Mosul, anyone who was Sunni with some vague relation to ISIS was arrested, charged with crimes they didn't commit in kangaroo courts, and sentenced to death. Not to mention the many who have just been killed by vigilantes in "revenge killings".

@Arif Kocer, I still can't for the life of me understand why you guys simply don't let all those refugees go where they want to go.
I was once told because Turkey is being paid to keep them, I looked into this and it's not a sufficient reason. Turkey is spending 5x more than what Europe is giving them to keep these refugees in Turkey.
So what plausible reason could the ruling elite have in keeping this many migrants in the country instead of simply letting them go where they want to go.
The only rational explanation I can think of is perhaps the government wants to use these migrants as a bargaining chip in their dealings with Europe? If so, is it really worth all the hassles the people have to deal with?
It's not something I've been able to figure out. I had the same conversation with a Polish friend of mine who was freaking out that Poland was going to get so many migrants coming in from Belarus. I remember telling him, "why do you care, they don't want to stay in Poland, just let them go where they want to go."

I completely understand what the Turkish people may feel like with the refugee situation as I am Jordanian and Jordan has received the most refugees relative to population. native Jordanians like myself make up like 30 - 40% of the country's population, yes we are now a minority after receiving Palestinian, Iraqi, Circasion, Chechen, & Syrian refugees.. jobs diminished and now in main cities employers employ people that fall under their "origin" and since we are a minority now, the only jobs we get are government jobs which pay a lot less than the private sector... Syrians who came only employed syrians (under the table) which led people getting food poisoning... Palestinians brought their nasty personalities that they gained from camps to the main cities.. bringing murder, theft, etc... Many of the refugees don’t want to adapt to the culture of the host nation and often feel like the system is doing them wrong because of this wich leads many to do crime and ignore basic social manners. I’m a firm believer that you should live in a culture similar to the one you grew up in. There is a reason why many European people don’t move to other non European wealthy countries and its not only about race but simply they don’t match their cultural believes. I also find it selfish how so few islamic countries are opening themselves up for refugees. a muslim from Syria would be able to adapt a lot easier in an islamic country. This doesn’t count for all refugees btw there are some great refugees who adapt to the new culture and contribute to society. But when you look at it as a whole these problems do stand out.
