the 1/4 inch input just like on mixers is for line level signal only....the line/mic button works like it should only for the xlr input depending if your source is mic or line and have selected the button setting accordingly...that's why you can barely hear any difference even when you crank the input level and the master, you are using an input that is designed for +4db line level and mic level is like -40 to -60 db
use a mic with an actual xlr cable, have the button set on mic, have the channel gain at mic, adjust the master accordingly and you'll get the difference

Im currently deciding between this and JBL partybox 120, use case would be pub quizes, karaoke, bbqs and smal DJ setups. What would you reccomend ?

My thoughts.. Both are good options . But the JBL has no pole mount hole on the bottom so must be set on a table or floor. Mackie thump go 8 inch great for speech and light background music but lacks low end for djing. I would do a full Mackie go 12inch (only a few more dollars still has all the features of the 8 inch but bigger ) so it covers you better for speech , music , and most small gigs . @@DjMartiniMidwest Thank you for your response, unfortunatelly I do not live in the USA, in europe mackie 12inch goes for 550 euros that is quite over my budget, since I have 2 big PA systems and I need something I can transport without van, something like pocket PA for small events.

@@parrotv2 Ok , I would still probably recommend the Mackie as more of mobile dj speaker . My opinions only . A lot people do like the JLB sound and style. Thanks .

@@DjMartiniMidwest Thanks again I went with mackie thump go it sounds really nice for such small package and its feedback eliminator works as intended so Im happy with it. Overall I wanted baterry powered PA under 800, 2x thump go was 688, unfortunatelly 2x trash go 12inch would cost me 1100 euros for that price I would rather haul my wooden heavy older PAs that are much more powerfull and I can always bring small generator or battery pack.
