Our autistic son, Andy, is struggling to understand all of the things we've got planned over the next month or so, so I head out to try and find a solution.

    ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time CZcamsr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs.

I used to support someone and part of his daily routine was to look at his view weekly planner which was also a white board on the wall with pictures of his activities like going swimming, college etc. Hope it helps with Andy!

Having suffered from anxiety myself its not easy to describe for me never mind the other issues Andy has explaining himself. The diary/ calendar ideal will allow him to get his head round things in his head at his pace

Hi Kev, I've been following you on LollujoFm, and have only seen now that you have a vlog. I think you're super cool and definitely the best FM CZcamsr. But that's not why I'm writing now. We have an autistic boy, now 4 years (soon 5 years), he is at a special autist kindergarten where we get all the tools and help to cope with him and help him, as well as understand his mindset, etc. (We are from Denmark). One of the main things about an autist is just planning, like using icons and planning, so he knows what he's going to do. The kindergarten uses it and we use it when we need something that is not planned or when he does not want what we should. The pictogram or image explanation is great to show what he's going to do, so it's not a surprise (combined in a form of calender). An example of this was when we went to the dentist - the first time we were doing this - it did not go well (he almost got a fury attack), this was before we got help to cope with him. Next time he had begun in the kindergarten and they made a pictogram and it was expalined in this in pictures what should happen -and it went perfekt without any problems.
So planning is a super good thing so your son knows what's going to happen and what he's going to do. It is even a great idea that there is a reward when he has done these things - in the end. It may be ipad, candy or whatever he loves. Our son loves numbers, cars, candy and of course ipad. The autism experts we talk to often say reward, reward, reward. Give the child a reward when they do something they would not normally do, it's often about breaking a bad pattern that autists have. Autists often follow patterns, and there may be good patterns that we want to break, but also good patterns that we want to understand or build.
Do not hesitate to ask for advice if you have any questions or otherwise.
Thanks Kev - Keep up the good work

Autist are very visual - so its often better to show them what to do - rather than tell. Perfect with the Blackboard. Another good thing about blackboard or pictograms etc. Is when he does not want to listen - then tell him - it's on the board, ie It's not you who dictate, but the board that tells him what to do. This can also be used in smaller scale - etc. "Its time for dinner", afterwards "Ipad 30 minutes" (Here its great to use a timeglass - again, its visual time) And it's hard to argue against. :-) - Okay, know I will watch some more of your Vlog videos, thanks Kev

It literally just hit me that I got to as a Cork City fan get access all areas (I didn't get a fancy pass though, just the key to the changing room and other places!) not on a match day, but still! Would've been nice to have taken the key, but for some odd reason I thought it was a bad idea! Good luck in summer in the city Kev, I'm sure it'll be alright!

Probably no good to you now, but could you buy two of the monthly calenders and have two months side by side, and then alternate. So write August, October & Decembers dates on one, and September & November on the other, so there's always two months on display ?

Also with Andy maybe because he's enjoyed his days out so much with you guys, like the Cbeebies land, like the kids who don't go to school place ect. he now somewhat trusts your judgment when it comes to days out? Either that (hopefully) or it is just a blip as you said... The fact he panicked when you were out might have been him questioning his trust in you or something?

You should get Burger King. It's better food than McDonald's.
I work at a Burger King, and I think the food is phenomenal. And I think the food is cheaper at BK

+CheeseOnCracker Andy doesn't like the buns at Burger King - McDonalds buns are the only fast food he eats
