Fishmate P7000 koi pond fish autofeeder review

  • If you are looking for an auto feeder for your koi pond the Fishmate P7000 may be just what you are looking for. The P7000 is a budget feeder with some handy features, particularly the frequent feed mode which improves on the standard 3 feeds a day that the normal feeding mode provides.
The main issue with previous feeders I've looked at is that the minimum feed amount is way to big for smaller sized ponds but the Fishmate potentially overcomes this problem with a claimed low minimum feed volume of 3 teaspoons.
In this review I put it through its paces and tell you everything you need to know to decide if this feeder is right for you and your koi.

I had one of these for a few years worked a treat to start with, as time went on I noticed the hopper started to get moisture in it. This turned out to be condensation from the sun we believe. Then we noticed the spout clogging up. This turned out to be slugs and snails getting into the spout as this holds pellets. Some copper tape wrapped around base stopped that. The final point was the plastic on the rear of the worm broke and no spare part available. Great in-depth video.

Thanks for explaining the manual feed. I could never figure it out on mine. I used it 2 seasons on the same battery. The 3 feeds work for me because I like to manually feed 2 times a day to keep an eye on who is eating and who is not.. The manual feed will be good to set up when I go on vacation to make up the 2 feeds im losing. No problems with mine. Thanks for the review.

Interesting review. Thanks for sharing daz. Definitely a complicated feeder. I've got one of these. This is my 3rd season with it, including using it over winter on the grow on. Only on 2nd set of batteries. I used that frequent feed mode. 12 feeds over 24 hours. But I use mostly sinking and a bit of floating, I find it means some of the smaller fish still get a look in. Ends up being 16grams when using sinking as it's alot more dense. Good reliable feeder, I've not had an issue with it

Used these feeders now for 5 years excellent value for money in my opinion. Frequent feed is superb using 50 feeds a day works like clockwork. Same amounts on mine 10g a feed. At 50 feeds the batteries still last a year. Only down side is I have had some slugs get in the feeder through the tiny joins or battery lid and they lay across the circuit board and short it never works probally again after that. I found if you tape all the seams with slug copper tape you won't have a problem. But all in all excellent feeder if you want to feed a lot over the course of a day.

You brought up a good point. I currently use the Fishmate p7000 fish feeder and I have a greedy Chagoi and Kohaku and they eat the majority of the feed that comes out. However, I do feed around 20 feeds in 12 hours so the growth of my fish have not been stunted by these two greedy koi. Nonetheless, great video as always.

Hi mate, I did think about rechargeable batteries but a few people have said they get 2 seasons out of a set. I suspect they have updated this model quite recently as a couple of people have also said they had an older one and it fed way to much. I'll see how long these batteries last and then decide. I did pay a small fortune for Duracell so they should last longer in theory 👍👍

Thanks for the great review. Stefen from Koi TV recently reviewed a different feeder (quite a bit more expensive than yours) that also feed multiple feeds per day. To reduce the koi's ability of 'learning' when each feed would happen and be waiting as per your Karashi example, a couple of times a week he would change the main clock time by an hour or so, but not the programmed feed time. This would feed the same amount, the same number of times per day just an hour earlier or later. While the koi could potentially anticipate feeding times because they varied from week to week and day to day hanging out waiting to be first in line to eat was almost emlimiated. Might be worth a try if using the multiple feed option. Just a suggestion. Cheers.

Hi, I've just bought a Jebao FD-55 off of ebay and apart from it's a bit of a monster size wise no complaints. i have a mixture of round 3mm high protein, 5mm wheatgerm and 5mm high protein sinking pellets mixed with no problems dispensing as yet(after a week). 230vac transformed down on a plug top transformer power supply so no battery hassles although i had to install the transformer in a waterproof housing but done and forgotten. i haven't measured the amount dispensed but using 4 of the 6 available feeds during the day when at work seems to me doing the trick for my 16 koi 30 to 70 cm, 2 huge carp and 2 sturgeon nothing left uneaten! i put the instructions somewhere safe and haven't seen them since but managed to program it without the only peculiarity is it can only be programmed to work on the hour.

Hi mate, sorry for the late reply. To be honest I don't know for sure as I had a large pond with a lot of big koi at the time so I didn't test how little it could feed. I do remember that it had various different screws that changed how much it fed. From my memory and experience I would be very surprised if it wasn't able to feed very small amounts as it is a really high quality, well engineered feeder. There is a manual here for the one I used www.pondkeeper.co.uk/ProductPDF/3317.pdf

When I got my koi last June Tim had no Chag so being impatient I bought one from elsewhere against my better judgment. That one has never grown (to be fair it was a very cheap fish) and was meant to be replaced by the one from Tim but the guy hasn't collected it. May ask about the size of food pellets fed. I have goldfish and was told by my supplier to feed pellets just big enough to fit into the mouth of the largest fish in the pond. Something to do with taking in less air feeding at the surface?
