Riley gets WAAAYYYY too much respect
You could take 2 (Riley), 3 (Franklin), & 4 (Ferentz) and slide them down and move 5 (Lanning), 6 (Fickell), 7(Rhule), & 8 (Fleck) ahead of them. Lanning and Fickle are going to end up being really special coaches.
HCs Braun & jSmith (Sparty), w/o b1g money & personnel resources, likely do more w/less than some better-resourced B1G cfb programs.
To me the best way to rank em is by one simple question: if you had to replace your current HC, in what order would you pick a replacement? As an OSU fan, I wouldn’t replace Day with any of them, but if I had to it would EASILY be Dan Lanning. Probably not even close
I don't think there's a clear anything.... I think we'll be able to make a much better assessment at the end of the season. The argument for lanning right now is The ability to infuse a program... From telen acquisition... To excitement... To hires. Though I wouldn't give it to him until there's some big wins on the table. So we'll see after the season is through.
Fleck would never lose a game if he was at TOSU. Great coach. I could coach the Buckeyes to 10 wins and a loss to Michigan. Riley is even worse.
So being born on 3rd base is a top criteria?
Nope but what have U done or born on
Day is 56-6 if you minus the two losses to UM when Connor Stallions was in charge. Also, I don’t quite get the “3rd base” parroting when Harbaugh was the one born into a longtime football family. Talk about being born with a step up in the field. And Ryan Day doesn’t have a more successful brother to funnel him coaches from the NFL
Will you mean to tell me Ryan day and the Ohio? Soft University. Program Lame they allowed their signals to get stolen 2 years in a row. by the way Ryan dey claim they changed their signals before the game in Columbus.@@SatansShart
Lincoln Riley at two is goofy.
Hard to argue with this rankings list in general terms... I think its fair and reasonable under current circumstances... I still think PJ Fleck is a little high, yet his time at Minny has proven to be fruitful... I also think the Kirk Ferentz ranking is too high, Not because he isn't a great coach - he is - but only based on the 'new B1G' structure... And as much as I am afraid to say it, I'm hoping that Bret Bielema doesn't fall into this trap as well, because he is also a very good coach... CFB is changing, and changing rapidly... And I think old timers like him are going to find it harder to keep up with the younger bucks in the league...
I see where you are going with Kirk & Bert. I'm in wait and see mode to see if they adapt. I'm generally an optimistic person, and I'm in wait and see mode to see if they both adapt.
Not that his determines how good a coach is, but Hawkeyes schedule is favorable with No Michigan, Oregon, or Penn State in 2024.
@@BigTenTed If one adapts, I'd bet on BB first... K.Ferentz is at least a decade older, and as an older guy I totally get how hard it is to change - LOL...
Bret is too fat and doesn't have the energy it takes to manage everything that needs to be managed with a big10 team. He depends heavily on his staff to do a lot of the work, which is fine, except going into the 2023 with high expectations after a great 2022 the team was very poorly prepared and out of shape, they got steamrolled. That never should have happened.
@@catfeline1530 Hmmm. I admit I worry about his health - WRT his weight... but to your point he 'allows the people he hired' to do their jobs... But I strongly believe that in this day in age, with all their responsibilities, a CFB HC really needs to be a true CEO... More so than in the past. Nick Saban, Kirby Smart, Jim Harbaugh are prime examples ... Being a good CEO and hiring the right people - and firing those who don't measure up, and quickly - is much more important in today's CFB world....IMHO
This is the year for Lanning and Oregon to back up all the hype. #5 is fair for now.
I agree...I think Lanning is a better coach than Franklin IMHO.. and maybe even Riley...
Not just hype... Certainly getting it done in player acquisition department.... And at least to a pretty high degree in the coach hiring department on the inspiration department. Time for the big win department
@@ramspencer5492he won nothing yet... But am sure he glad he don't have to coach against a good Washington coach
Is player acquisition of big deal Oregon's payroll must be in the tens of million.of dollars @ramspencer5492
Coach polls don’t mean diddley
Riley is a great OC, but so far a mediocre HC. You can’t have only one side of the ball be good and be a good HC. He should be middle of the pack until he proves otherwise.
At least he’s prioritizing it now. Still young for a HC
Why would MI give the job to someone 13 in the B1G? You have the Mich QB winner at 15 or so, too. Unlikely. Moore better be top 5 by the end of this year. Beating PSU - the game EVERYONE picked MI to lose last year - then OSU - seems to warrant a higher rating than Lanning’s year 1 blowout losses to GA then rival OrSU and WA - and twice losing to WA when favored last year on some terrible close game risky calls - which was the only way he loses either of those games - makes Lanning - Ok - B1G game loss Franklin like - and what B1G games has either won? Riley got about as little from Heisman and great roster talent at SC as possible with a no effort defense. I’d say Ferentz Day Braun Fickle Moore. Ruhle lost some terrible games with NE. Fickle had a good year maybe top 4-but is he elite?!? Braun at 15 - completely absurd.
I know Lanning recruits like a madman, but I think he is too high. He hasn't won anything. He lost to Washington twice last season. They lost to them cause he was way too aggressive and didn't managed the game better.
He only lost to Washington by 3 points who was in the championship game.
@@Donnachaidh07 but he still lost? so we agree. He hasn't won anything that important yet? Good.
@kgk4L96 True but keep in mind that was only his second year as a head coach period. Getting 10 wins in his first year and 12 plus a NY6 bowl win in year two is pretty damned impressive, especially when the only losses came by a field goal margin that was decided in literally the last minute of each game to a team that played in the Natty.
Name one big Ryan day win
2021 Sugar Bowl - CFP Semifinal beat a Trevor Lawrence led Clemson team, won the 2019 Big Ten Championship ( a year that included them finishing the regular season with wins over #8 Penn State, #13 Michigan, #8 Wisconsin)
Day has to win it all this year. He was handed an elite team and hasn’t done much with it. The Clemson win is about it.
@daGoBlue big wins is only one of several factors. But since you’ve asked, what coach on this list has bigger wins than Ryan Day?
@@BigTenTed yep I missed that one
@@SatansShart ....hmm...good point!
The top coach in the B1G depends on which factors you use to determine it. Ryan Day is a tough #1 choice for me because he walked into well oiled machine. He's was a maintainer as opposed to a builder. He's done a lot of impressive things since he took the job, which shows he's good enough to keep a great team where it has been.
My pick is Matt Rhule, not because I'm a Husker fan, but he has built 2 teams from 2-10ish to to conference contenders. That is the real test of a great coach. And he has done it while teaching values that make men better at life.
You are wrong of course but you have your opinion. Matt should be below 10th or lower. What has he well well took to programs and messing up a NFL team. He won nothing not even a title or great recruits he overated at best. Number 1? Are u blind, kidding or just a hater. At least Ryan day haven't mess up an supposedly elite Ohio State team or taken over. Urban Myer recruits are gone and still players want to play for soft Ohio State and not irrelevant Nebraska
