you should do a series of videos titled exploring for explorers where you film part of the road trip and stop at a few interesting locations along the way
Rhode Island is a nice place. I spent some time in Newport back in 2005 for a Military assignment. Really beautiful part of the country. I could see Rhode Island people dealing in gold.
Eventually… there were quite a few on the market a few months ago. I’ll wait for a good deal since those are pretty niche haha

Trogly, does that mean your family have to be searching for interesting guitars to be sure of getting a holiday? Family: We want to go on holiday. Trogly: Find me a ‘61 SG near a national park and I’ll think about it…
Interesting fact - the correct name for a Union Jack is actually just Union Flag, it's only supposed to be referred to as a Union Jack when it's flown from a ship.
I DO prefer the Union Jack, but man, this one sounds amazing!! some killer tones there, and your playing has improved by a lot, my good sir!!! great job!
Even if the flag is painted on upside down.... minor detail but when you look at the top left of the flag - the thicker of the white stripes should be on the top not the bottom
I like the matching headstock of the "Union Jack" better. Just my preference of these two, but I'd personally be looking for one without the opaque paint jobs. I'm definitely a Wood Snob! LOL!
Awesome guitar! I have an Epiphone Explorer, one of the years where it came from the factory with a Gibson branded truss rod cover. I thought the seller was an idiot and just put it on there, but I found out that that's how they came. I love that guitar. There's something different about it, it responds very differently when hooked up to my amps than any other guitar. With my Boss Katana it sounds incredible and louder on the acoustic setting??? So weird? I haven't checked resistance of the pickups yet but they've got to be super hot, right? I have zero need to upgrade to a Gibson. But that Gibson truss rod cover still bugs me!! It just didn't look right, the Epiphone logo is 5" above it!?!?
Hi, great guitar. I'm from Australia, and band named Pseudo Echo, used one of these in the late 80's. You can see it in their Over Tomorrow video. Not sure if he still has it . Have a great day.
Trogly - did you notice that @4:15 the Union Jack Explorer and the other designs in that advert are built on '76 style Explorers as they have pick guards over the graphics and the three in a row control knobs
I love this channel. Gibson should be paying you.. I went form having little interest in the brand to being a huge fan. You also once helped me via email and gave me advice that allowed me to negotiate the price down of a Gibson Memphis es-330 I wanted by almost $600 and it worked. You rock Trogly!
Normally love to give troglys comment section a quick read- usually a super positive and friendly place. I’d recommend passing on it this time around, folks!
Austin I’m really impressed with your playing in the demo’s…….I’ve been a long time viewer and I remember your early demo’s, You would show someone else playing the same model or you would reluctantly do it yourself……You could see a bit of nervousness in your playing which i totally get, I have the same problem…..When nobody’s around I play completely relaxed but start recording or have someone ask me to play something and that nervousness comes right back……It’s obvious to see that you knew for your channel to prosper you needed to demo each actual guitar and you hit the woodshed and practiced your ass off…….Kudos to you my friend! You have the best guitar channel on you tube and you did it as a one man show, Much respect on all of the above, Keep doing what your doing.
its rare when you hear the words "you know i was pretty nervous cause its craigslist and i drove a long ways and he knew i was out of my element... but hes a dealer!! i had nothing to worry about"
If you want to play Master of Puppets by Metallica on that guitar or any other Explorer, the pedal they use is a: “Puppet Master PMEQ Semi-Parametric EQ”
I'd rock them BOTH .. super kool, Evel Knievel model. I'm Jelly ;) All you need now is the Camo version. Will this be listed @ $25k or saved for your museum?
I have a love/hate with the 84 Explorers. I love the way they look without the pickguard. But don't like the toggle near the knobs (for playing/switching). It belongs on the long bout, IMO!
I had one from a similar era that was painted like Mathis Jabs from the Scorpions, a friend picked it up at NAMN from Gibson. Ended up getting it stolen but was my main for many years in the 80s.
Yup there were adds in the guitar mags. That is how he knew it was my dream guitar. While I don’t have that I have the other instrument he got which is an 82 P Bass Special in Candy Apple Green. Fender never made that bass for production. It was a 1 off to show the 83 P Bass Elite color. My best friend and bassist who passed owned that one.
Never had the money for a Gibson Explorer. I felt lucky when I had a good trade deal that netted me a Hamer USA Explorer w/case. Oddly enough, it has the 3 on a side headstock instead of the hockey stick.
The only thing I don't like is the white pickup plastics. I know they were probably awesome with the original white finish, but now that it's aged, you should consider changing them to cream or black
Love the Union Jack, but the rest? Meh....not so much. Sounds like a fun road trip for your family though. I spent many a summer in Bristol, RI. as a teenager. I love visiting, especially since my sister is there
I wonder if you could reach out to a fine art restoration craftsperson to learn about picking up whiteout without the lacquer to keep it nice and original.
Hey, could let us know more about what you do during the clean up? I am starting to do a collection on my own. I am eager to give a refresh to the finishing and to the fretboard as you did 🎉 Thanks for sharing!
things i noticed from the playing demo, that strap is just hanging on waiting for a disaster and when in the playing position that flag is perfectly straight as it flies. Cool, Cheers from Australia.
you could just use the rebel flag as part of history, its not like history books in school are gonna blur it and i see this as nothing different but if its for youtube monetization reasons its understandable good video overall
I approach the topic from a historical context but people like to twist it on the internet. It means different things to different people. Not worth getting into its history when that isn’t the main feature of the episode. More info here m.czcams.com/video/pbKswpDTr7U/video.html
Wow, that Explorer is in really fantastic shape, and it sounds as good as it looks. Very rich and resonant. The neck and middle are mellow and full with a moderate pick effort. If it weren't in such great collector shape it would be an exemplary stage guitar. Great review, sir.
LoL! I owned one of those back in 1999. I bought it for $175.00 bucks from my local pawn shop. Mine was so yellowed from sitting in the store front window display for more then 3 years, that's why I purchased it so cheap. I kept it in my collection for 8 months then passed it on to a student player as a first guitar to help a local kid get started in playing. I let it go for nothing, because at the time, it just seemed too tacky for my taste to own or play it.
I'm wondering why it took so long for having graphics on a guitar to be a craze. Some might say it started with Eddie Van Halen but there were plenty artists from the 60s and 70s that were already doing this themselves or having someone at least do graphics if not a whole build.
Wonderful video. I think you really enjoyed this Guitar, it sounds great! Please consider an in depth polishing and restoration video, I got the same product as you but my results aren't anywhere near... cheers from Germany
Nice find! I might be crazy though but this guitar looks about three different colors. In the beginning it looks almost yellow, then white during the demo then almost a light brown at the end of the demo. Strange
It’s just the green screen filtering out the yellow (making it look white). I don’t know why it looks brown in the other Instance but I’m sure it’s related to the green screen / post processing.
Yeah, I don’t understand why he did this. Sensitive? Come on. People need to grow up and move on. No matter how you feel about it it is part of history. Plain and simple. Like people that see old WWII footage and they show swastikas and freak out. Or when when people talk about the older Washington football team and won’t say Redskins. Why not? That’s what they were called!
I do not usually leave comments on your show. But the american flag explorer looks so much better than a jack. Just the offset of colors, the white against the red and the blue and the black. I really like your show. Your guitar for price a little high for me. I really want to buy an explorer. You're want me to scratch that itch
It means different things to different people. Not worth getting into its history when that isn’t the main feature of the episode. More info here m.czcams.com/video/pbKswpDTr7U/video.html
Nice score, congratulations! Cleaned up really well. I'm not a fan of "Dirty Fingers". The other guitar's were sweet too I imagine that blue one will look incredible all cleaned up! 👍 "Evil Knievel stunt guitar" Ceasar's Palace here we come. 🇺🇸
I don't know if you realize Austin, but the union flag on your guitar is printed upside down. The largest white cross stripe should go to the top left corner as you look at it. It is an obvious flaw...but does it add value as being a mistake from the factory? I'll leave that discussion for you.
Strong Evel Knievel vibes of this one.
Yes!!!
😁
Would look awesome sitting next to an Evil Knievel Pinball Machine 🤟
Definitely
Very!
The fact that those pickup rings are not yellowed at all it's pretty amazing after 40ish years. Same with the knobs really
you should do a series of videos titled exploring for explorers where you film part of the road trip and stop at a few interesting locations along the way
I bet the one with the rebel flag looks the coolest. You should go ahead and show it man.
He could have, before babies took over and turned the whole country into pre-school.
the neck pickup on that guitar is so so sweet, beautiful sound
That guitar sounds great! Congratulations! You must be so thrilled to own it.
Rhode Island is a nice place. I spent some time in Newport back in 2005 for a Military assignment. Really beautiful part of the country. I could see Rhode Island people dealing in gold.
Cool. Glad you got it. I hate to say it, but you have to get the Stars and Stripes version of the map guitar too.
Eventually… there were quite a few on the market a few months ago. I’ll wait for a good deal since those are pretty niche haha
Trogly, does that mean your family have to be searching for interesting guitars to be sure of getting a holiday?
Family: We want to go on holiday.
Trogly: Find me a ‘61 SG near a national park and I’ll think about it…
Family: Let's go to a holy site this summer!
Trogly: [takes them to the Gibson factory]
Interesting fact - the correct name for a Union Jack is actually just Union Flag, it's only supposed to be referred to as a Union Jack when it's flown from a ship.
Wow dude, really impressed me with the clean section from master of puppets.....best I've EVER heard you play.

Explorers are the greatest. Evil Kenievel pant job is rad. Those LP Customs are sick. Gun Metal Grey and Goldburst please.
LOL! Yeah, the first thing I thought of is Super Dave Osborne!
its a beauty . Trog's had some great guitars in this haul . @@VN9001

Ha ! I saw them live at the Ferntree Gully Hotel back in the day. Great band ! Im from Oz too but live in NZ these days 😎🎸🤘
Middle (both pups )sounds like the sweet spot ,especially with distortion
Trogly - did you notice that @4:15 the Union Jack Explorer and the other designs in that advert are built on '76 style Explorers as they have pick guards over the graphics and the three in a row control knobs
I have such a romantic idea of old guitars being found in America so to hear about an old dealer is so cool

Thunder road guitars has style 30 graphic. Just a heads up.

Major props for playing Gemini by Brian Kahanek in the tone demo! One of the funnest songs they ever had on Guitar Hero
What do y’all use for nitro finish polish?
Once the distortion kicks in it comes alive. I love Dirty fingers
I have a love/hate with the 84 Explorers. I love the way they look without the pickguard. But don't like the toggle near the knobs (for playing/switching). It belongs on the long bout, IMO!
what is that fret protector you are using to polish?
Every time he plays a D chord with the E and A strings tuning, God kills a puppy.
That's one great sounding guitar!
You got that right it really stands out
Awesome ... makes me think of Evel Knievel.
I had one from a similar era that was painted like Mathis Jabs from the Scorpions, a friend picked it up at NAMN from Gibson. Ended up getting it stolen but was my main for many years in the 80s.
Yeah. I wonder if there was ever an official Mathias design. His explorers are iconic.
Yes, they were part of the early designer series. See one documented here m.czcams.com/video/QZyh7lREWu0/video.html

The nerdiness of this channel is so beautiful
Did CZcams make you blur out the Rebel designs or did you do that voluntarily?
He likely doesn't want risk demonitization.
Cool guitar , sounds great , makes me want to jump over the Gorge here in New Mexico !...Thanks Trog !
Never had the money for a Gibson Explorer. I felt lucky when I had a good trade deal that netted me a Hamer USA Explorer w/case. Oddly enough, it has the 3 on a side headstock instead of the hockey stick.
I'd play the rebel flag one out ❤
Gibson should release one named "Dora" (the Explorer).
Quite happy to have rebel gibson in oz
Cool Flying V! But the got one of the legs backwards. RARITY!
The only thing I don't like is the white pickup plastics. I know they were probably awesome with the original white finish, but now that it's aged, you should consider changing them to cream or black
As a collector, I think he’d prefer keeping the original parts, though… no matter how much of a mismatch it is now.
Honestly, I much prefer the stars and Stripes to the Union Jack version (aside from the matching headstock)
Where in Rhode Island did you find it? Only asking because I’m a local and wondering how close you were to me.
After this beauty I really can't wait to come to visit your Gibson Museum.....Definetly an unique experience !!!!!!👍
How in the actual frack have those pickup rings not yellowed at all over almost 40 years?!
Witchcraft. It's gotta be witchcraft.
I find it a bit dumb that the confederate flag is controversial but the Union Jack is collectable…considering they pretty much pulled the same crap.
Feels like there should be another line above the top one, passing above the neck pickup.
Love the Union Jack, but the rest? Meh....not so much. Sounds like a fun road trip for your family though. I spent many a summer in Bristol, RI. as a teenager. I love visiting, especially since my sister is there
Trogly… I love you… but don’t interrupt the intro music ever again. Let it play. We can wait. /j
I wonder if you could reach out to a fine art restoration craftsperson to learn about picking up whiteout without the lacquer to keep it nice and original.
I think it’s funny that you blurred the rebel guitar. I mean I know people get worked up over it, but come on. Just funny!
Hey, could let us know more about what you do during the clean up?

I see that Gibson HP in the background. I am excited about it and hoping its not the hot pink fade.
People don’t want cash atm as it’s being killed by inflation. Gold is a safe bet
17:35 what song is this from? sounds very judas priest esque.
The upside down Union Jack is a bit disappointing. Why couldn't they do it the correct way up?

The ‘sign of distress’ union jack on the body. However the headstock u.j. is 100% endorsed by Buck Pal & Billy Shakes. 🇬🇧.
So I need some context why is the rebel guitar blurred?

I'm in love with that guitar you know me I love dirty fingers pickups.
I would want one with a Kahler
Any non “whammy” version of ANY Gibson, is better! But then again, I’m a Tele player.

"If we blur the design we will feel safe"-logic 2023. The "Union Jack" is more offensive.

thumbs up for DETHKLOK!
That looks like Evil Knievel’s guitar!
Trogly your a trooper, can't wait to visit your museum someday.
Even today the Explorer is a radical design... nice score....
Wow, an Explorer that was decked in the colors of the US flag.
I'm sure at least one of them was played live.

The Evil Knievel guitar.😂
