    As one of the people who bought a 3DO back when it was still $600, Trip is a legend to me. It was A LOT of money (several paychecks) at the time, but it was worth it. Road Rash 3DO was the 90s for me.

    Having lead the 3DO effort in the U.S. on the Panasonic side, working with Trip Hawkins and 3DO, it was interesting to hear him reflect on the launch and business challenges for the format in the 90's. Brings back a lot of memories, good and bad, as well as the fun we had launching hardware and software including great titles like GEX, Road Rash, Need For Speed, and a great version of John Madden Football which was demonstrated before a Superbowl broadcast and played by OJ Simpson. Lot's of interesting history behind 3DO.

  • @theadamtron
    @theadamtron Před 3 lety +3

    For all the flak the 3D0 gets as a 'failed console' I think alot of which is unfounded. Just because something is in the end a business failure does not mean the machine itself is without merit. I remember playing Need for speed on the 3D0 and it just being miles ahead of anything on any other system at the time. The bit-mapped 3D graphics just blew me away.

    • @RMCRetro
      @RMCRetro  Před 3 lety +1

      Two things blew me away. NFS on the demo in store and the price. It was over £550 when I saw it which was just too rich for my blood. But it goes to show just what a hit other manufacturers were prepared to take on hardware in order to profit through strict game sales rules and fees. I admire the attempt to break that cycle

  • @hi_tech_reptiles
    @hi_tech_reptiles Před 3 lety +2

    Trip is a visionary. Back in the day, EA didnt always mean youd like the game, but you knew someone liked it - cuz it was quality. Let alone the 3DO, which was just a step or two off of long term success. Great vid.

    I remember buying one of the first issues of Next Generation, a mid-90's gaming magazine, and being mesmerized by an interview with Trip. One of the biggest IF in console game industry; 3DO with EA being 1st party company to provide a game exclusivity support within the console. Probably would've gave Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo & SEGA ran out of the money in console war. While Atari already shitting the bed and crumbled at the time. 3DO was like Xbox in the 90s. Great hardware but poor 1st party support. Xbox have similar issue as 3DO but they somehow exist for long only to get wasted and treated like crap by microsoft making every Xbox hardware been useless since Xbox One SMH.. Microsoft should just stick with PC and VR gaming

    This interview is interesting in a couple of ways. The obvious insight by a individual whom made an impact both up front and centre with the control of the support mechanism that hardware craved and needed. But to me what was and is a theme especially for people like Trip, Jobs, and l would imagine others, is the unmovable belief that what they think and believe is the only standpoint or view that should be the only way or process to follow. Good interview Neil.

    While the whole 3D0 pre-release hype thing was a great smoke and mirrors show, including the few showcases craftily using apple tech hidden from sight, the actual machine wasnt half as bad as it could have been, well from what I've experienced of it.
    I remember seeing pictures of that monster 3D0 prototype in Edge Magazine bitd, but to this day I never owned a 3D0.

    As a huge Amiga fan, and early EA games enthusiast, it seems like I should love Trip... but I honestly somehow have his name sitting in a dark quadrant of my mind just north of Mehdi Ali. Maybe I'm lumping him in with the pessimism I had for the 3DO, or maybe it was the tax fraud. Surely there's something more I'm not remembering right?

    Trip Hawkins should never leave EA to begin with. Look what happened when this man temporarily leave the company to make 3DO console only to get back stabbed by his own former empire that had promised him to provide a 1st party game support between EA & 3DO, exclusively. EA is an example of a dysfunctional, dishonest, poor leadership & toxic gaming company. If anything Trip should never leave and he should just consider the 3DO to be producde under EA corporation. 3DO as an EA's console would've had be a game changer especially with all their game would be exclusive with it. Probably one of the biggest IF in console gaming industry.

    Years from now they will send a Terminator back in time to 1982 to stop the creation of EA and it's ultimate team packs from destroying the gaming world.

      hehe the EA of the '80s is a very different EA of the '90s and now... can we send the T1000 back to the late '90s?

      @@RMCRetro Thats true, I guess we could try to send one back to 2000 to stop the unholy demonic union of video games and andrew wilson instead. 🥺

    Spotted him in The Computer Chronicles episode czcams.com/video/2UbR18ElJVE/video.html from 1985. Electronic Arts was just two or three years old at that time. All fresh! :-)
