  • This old Briggs used to burn more oil than gas (dollar wise). I made a simple change and it does not burn oil,

I've been fixing mowers for my brother's auto shop at the lake for 30 years and with the air-cooled engine Briggs and Stratton specifically (my generator engine) you have to use 30w oil, because if you try using any awesome automotive quality oils, like 10w40 or 5w30 Valvoline synthetic for the Nissan, it will burn it, and then in a while the carbon buildup around the rings and valves will cause wear even around the cylinder, so it will begin to burn whatever kind of oil you use if its too late, but if it's an IC engine, you can replace the rings having a cast iron bore 👍

I have used 10w30 with zinc in all my engines including my old truck and car .To put it simply all engines with flat tappet cams needs zinc oil, in other words any engines that don't use a roller lifter cam .Your engines will thank you and so will your pocket book long term. Thanks for the video, good one

I think the main concern with a flat tappet cam is during break in or if you are running an agressive cam. The added zinc still isn't a bad idea.

      What brand oil with zinc?

I just got one of those engines back. I had given it to a coworker on a pressure washer with a bad pump so he could put it on an old tiller. He gave the whole set up to me cause he didn't use it anymore. The inlet nipple leaked, and the carb needed a kit. Just ordered a China replacement carb for $12 off eBay.

      Did the china carb work?

    • @natevanlandingham1945

@@TractorTech Yep. Exactly like the original but better.. The original leaked gas out of the 90° elbow that connected to the fuel line at the carb. The plastic was determined and cracked. But it also had to be run on full choke just to run. China carb has a better design for fuel inlet and doesn't leak now and also I now choke to start and open the choke to run.🤣.

10w-30 for summer, 5w-30 synthetic for winter is what I use in my splitter

In Australia Castrol is pretty much the only high milegage engine oil. They only make it as a traditional mineral oil, not fully sythetic blend. Instead of improving oil burning, switching from a regular sythetic Castrol oil to thier High Milege oil increase oil burning for me.

I'm going to try it on my trucks next oil change. It has burned a quart per 1000 miles since new (Chevy).

Yeah the 5.3 was known to burn oil and the AFM made it worse. I'd recommend disabling that. Also if you are going to use synthetic oil I'd use a Wix Xp oil filter. I'm not sure if these oil will completely solve your problems but it may help. Nonetheless it is a good oil. Let me know how it does.

Synthetic oil probably clears out the oil control ring.

  • @natevanlandingham1945

I run 15w40 in pretty much all my small engines and stationary engines like that! It's cheap and all over.

Yeah, this intek burned a bunch but the Mobil 1 one took care of it. I never add oil between changes.
