  • In this video I will enable and use the new ZOLEO Location Share+ feature now available for ZOLEO satellite messaging users.
    support.zoleo.com/kb/articles...
    This is in my opinion, a mashup of Garmin inReach’s Track Log and Mapshare, but for ZOLEO this means sharing your location history with up to 5 contacts via the ZOLEO messaging app. This is leveraging the aspect that anybody can download the ZOLEO messaging app onto their smartphone and interact with a ZOLEO device user.
    The best use case is that you are out for a multi day journey in the wilderness and you use the Location Share+ feature to allow your family to monitor your journey at regular intervals (6min to 4 hour) and send you ZOLEO app to app messages.
    Location Share+ if a premium feature where you will need to add 7.50$/month to your ZOLEO service plan, but you can cancel the feature at anytime, just like the service plans.
    Other features that are kinda interesting is the offline maps when viewing the location history. Great when you are at home and want a bit more detail on the maps. Maps is provided by mapbox. You can also copy the GPS coordinates of a location history point to copy over into another mapping program like google maps, GaiaGPS, etc…
    From the ZOLEO messaging app, you can start/stop a location share+ session, change the interval, enable/disable tones from the ZOLEO device when sending a location point and prevent sending location points when not moving.
    Location Share+ history can be viewed in the messaging tab under the Check-In message thread.
    Be sure to verify your Check-in contacts before heading out. Also you have the ability to send the link for your contacts to download the ZOLEO messaging app. They will not receive the location share+ updates otherwise, but rather only get notified when you manually do a checkin function. Location Share+ is only visible in the ZOLEO messaging app.
    This is a nice feature gap that just got closed if you compared to the Garmin inReach track log & mapshare. The only caveat at this moment is that you cannot use this feature to route plan or download the track. The best you can is able to copy the GPS cords from each point. 🛰️Shop Recommended Garmin Products 🛰️

    I just stumbled upon this new feature and went searching on YT and voila its so cool that you did this! Thanks Jim.

    The main reason I went with Zoleo was that they now have the Location Share+ feature. For the small charge, I think it is a Inreach killer addition to the app, making the Zoleo much more of a full featured two-way device.

      Are you able to use this for navigating the trail? Or would I need a dedicated gps device ?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před rokem

      I’d use a dedicated GPS device to navigate a track.

      Since I bring my phone to go with my Zoleo (and for pictures, etc), I use Gaia or FarOut app to follow a track. Rather than bring a separate GPS device, your phone in airplane mode and its built in GPS chipset can last a few days and serve as your mapping device.

    This is probably the feature that I will pull the trigger on the Zoleo now. Wife is insisting (demanding) that she be able to track me while I'm on the water. Thanks Jim for this timely update.

      It’s a good one Steve. Glad they came out with it as things open up here and I can travel

      Yeah, but while you are on the water can you track your wife? 😱 It’s amazing what they get up to when they know you aren’t there to observe… like the naughty pets caught on CCTV. So glad I don’t have wife issues to cause hair loss anymore.

    Great and timely video! I was just about to go pick up an Inreach mini, but now I’m definitely leaning towards the Zoleo. Unlimited pin drops for location sharing to my wife for as fast as 6 min intervals for less than the $35 Recreation subscription with Garmin makes it a better choice I think. I really like the no-movement setting.

      Yeah you really have to consider total cost of device over a year and ZOLEO seems to have the right mix of flexibility when you want to use it more

    I just bought a Zoleo last week and the only disappointment was lack of live tracking like Garmin can do. Then I go to activate a plan and see this share+ feature I’d never heard of!! Go to CZcams and you have a video from just 20 hours ago haha. They must have just rolled this feature out, makes me even happier with my Zoleo choice! Not a bad price at all for that feature.

      Great timing! I think they went live on Tuesday or Wednesday this past week. I agree a nice feature to close the gap between the inReach.

    Great video, thanks! So, it really doesn't show the path you drove/walked, but rather every 6 minutes it creates a point and then draws a straight line from point to point?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před rokem +1

      That’s right, same as for the inReach tracking / Mapshare where you log points based on an interval.

    How do you annoy the missus with this? Locations like the bada bing strip club?

  • @hamandcheese
    @hamandcheese Před 2 lety

    A couple of questions. If I am using the share+ feature, that means that whoever I am share+ing with needs to have the Zoleo app to get access to my "bread crumb" trail? Also, say I set the interval to 6 minutes. Do they get a phone notification every 6 minutes? That seems like it'd be annoying. At least you can change that to a different interval.
    Thanks for the video! I've had a Zoleo for maybe a year and a half and like it. Starting the PCT this year so this new functionality could be useful.

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 2 lety

      Correct - people just need the download the app so that you can add them to the share+ feature. For the 6 min interval, I think after the initial notification, they just get the notification balloon afterwards. But depending on the usage a longer interval makes sense instead of sending check-in’s.

    How many people would be sitting in front of their computer just waiting for you device to show your position? None of the people I know would.

    My decision is made. I just sold my inreach mini to buy a Zoleo. Quick question. Can I share the Zoleo device with my wife? I understand we can both download the app but can she use the device and switch it back to myself?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 2 lety +1

      You can share the ZOLEO with your wife, just need to pair it when your wife wants to take it and deal with the follow me messaging setting.

  • @samvanetten9595

    Do you need to have a phone on you in the woods for the location share to work?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před rokem

      No but you’ll need it to turn the location share on/off

  • @supersport3714

    Tell more more about sending a location without the extra service. Wha5 does the end users see?

    • @AvoidingChores
      @AvoidingChores  Před 2 lety

      They get the cords and if they tap they will see the location on a map on their phone. The only difference is that the person with the ZOLEO has to send it as a new message as opposed to the location service+ where it will send at a set interval
