I agree with everything you said about the mountain goats. The sunset tree is so underappreciated. Other fabulous indie bands include Regina spektor (the closest to the goats in feel) try the - Begin to hope- album The shins-wincing the night away- album Hobo Johnson-The rise of hobo Johnson- album Radical face-The family tree: the roots- album Hope you enjoy. They are not all like the goats but they are amazing like the goats. Me and a few friends always are looking for new indie.
People massively underestimate their work in the past decade but frankly the band is as good as it has ever been, and in some places better. I cannot recommend 'The Destruction of the Kola Superdeep Borehole Tower' off of Dark In Here highly enough if you're a fan of the older eras of TMG.
