  • Today I'm inside working on my bonsai trees.
    I update my Ficus microcarpa from seed. I work on my Ficus cutting of a cutting and also my Fusion trunk Ficus benjamina bonsai. I install a new LED light in the plant room to brighten up the bonsai bench.

    Your demonstration of aerial roots wrapping around the trunk is one reason many fig species in the tropics are referred to as "stranglers". The roots that fuse onto the trunk thicken over time and can prevent the trunk from actually growing, suffocating it and leaving a mesh tube of aerial roots essentially.

I suppose it’s a bonsai but I knew nothing about that. It has never grown aerial roots. Can I encourage that, or is it the wrong kind?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 5 lety +1

      They will fuse together, but you might have to wrap the trunks together to get good contact. The tops of the trees should be left to grow, this will thicken the trunks and speed up the fusion process. You can also separate the trees if you want a smaller style tree.

      A south facing window works well. I have grown my trees for 25 years without grow lights, but I have so many now that they actually block out the light from the window. I think the grow lights aren't necessary, but they do help get the plants through the dull dark days in winter.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 5 lety +1

      I was hoping it would look good with the initial careful pruning, but it was too tall and the branches were to thin. It required a hard profile pruning to get the tree back in proportion. I'm hoping it explodes with new branches to give me lots of choices for branch selection in the future.

    Hello, will it be safe if you water the top trees with the led light under it won't it burn or something. Btw what do you do if you have Caterpillar's ? I have spoken many I keep picking them up bit the have done a lot of damage to my leafs. It is like spring here instead of winter so far. I was going to use poison( not sure if that translates right) but I read that if the leafs are wet or something along those lines, don't use it.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 5 lety +1

      I have been very careful when watering the trees above the light. I'll be getting boot trays to go under the trees to catch any excess water. I don't get many caterpillars eating the leaves on my trees, I do get wasp's that cut out a section of the leaf to make their nest. It really makes the Maples look bad, but it doesn't hurt the tree. You might try to put screen around the trees to keep the insects away from the leaves as a natural solution. Be careful to protect yourself and the environment if you use pesticides!

    Doesn't it kind of negate the directional pruning if you come in a profile with the scissors afterward?

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  Před 5 lety

      Yes, I had to switch from careful precise pruning to a more random hard pruning, just to get the height back in proportion with the trunk. It's a rough method, but it works. You get a lot of new branches form on the older wood and this gives you more choices for future pruning in a more careful manner!
