Probably the most unintentionally iconic character in the franchise, Resident Evil set up shop with style in the 4th game and brought him back for the remake. I thought it would be fun to take a closer look at this ‘strangah’ and see what he’s all about. From being Leon’s backpack to an unforgettable catch phrase, here are 25 facts about The Merchant.

Hello Inky friends! Thank you for having me on, Kai. Let's do it again sometime! 😇
Yay!!!! Love you Suzi!!! ❤
TheSphereHunter is the absolute best, more Suzi please.
an absolute dream team!
Best collaboration ever. You two are my favourites, when it comes to RE related stuff.
yooooooo
In the remake, the merchant shows he clearly stands against Sadler's cult through his side missions
The merchant should be a playable character in Mercenaries. Imagine the load out he would have!
The man would be too dangerous to be kept alive, but too iconic to be killed.
I agree! He should be unlocked after getting S++ on all characters on all maps, the Merchant should have the Infinite RPG, Infinite Chicago Typewriter and Infinite Hand cannon as his weapon😁
1:29 The Merchant is so iconic that is even referenced in Bayonetta as one of the lines that Rodin uses to greet Bayo is "Whadya buyin? Heard that in a game once".
yeah I remember that too.
YESSSSS I REMEMBER 😂
you should have mentioned how inflation hit the merchent so hard
If you pay really close attention you might have noticed that Suzi is somewhat of a resident evil fan. It very subtle though.

Ох уж эти американцы. Кончились у них женщины видимо.
Однако, мне в это всё ещё не верится. Вроде как женщина выглядит.
I was surprised that there was any information on the merchant because of how mysterious he is
Suzy and Ink Ribbon, my two favorite creators and CZcams channels. What a pleasant surprise, wado wado.
Like hunk I think he’s one of coolest mysterious characters in RE
"the years haven't been kind to us" clearly a nod to veterans i loved it
Love in the remake when you piece together clues relating to the side quest and environmental story telling, it is implied the merchant is part of a noble family that sided with the Salazar family to fight the cults and sealed the parasite away.
Everything Leon and Ada do with the merchant has been part of a plan to weaken and destroy the cult. It is implied he might be the last survivor of his clan.
Example?
@@mohdadeeb1829destroying blue medallions (charms), crushing tombstones of the twins (for joining the cult), defamating Ramon himself with an egg, eliminating strong threats, they're all about the cult.
I liked that the merchant now refers to himself as "us" or says things like "me and the lads" several times. It kind of implies there are more of them or an organization of sorts.
Also, the requests kind of imply as well that they do dislike the cult so they are not that neutral as one may think.
You Cleary don’t know any British slang
@@spacecobra3101 No, I do not, please explain :)
@@chiwi94hallomann us can be commonly used to mean yourself. Hand us the tv remote. Hand us a pen, just slang talk
@@spacecobra3101We are not amused.
The gold armor request directly confirms that it has killed a few of his friends so he was around with some hunters that tried to take it down while probably raiding the castle
One of my new favorite merchant line is "there's a reason why gun rhymes with fun! 😂
There were several Merchant cosplayers at this years NY ComicCon. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to take pics with them. 😞
That blue flame thing makes sense because the Knights freeze when they see the blue flame
In my head canon I would like to believe that the Merchant was basically visiting the place frequently before the outbreak and once he saw the outbreak he was about to get out of dodge but he saw Ada & Leon and went "Now there is some great potential to make some quick money"
Holly hell, all this time I couldn't realise why he is complaining about his back pain, until I saw in this video how much stuff he carries
I love the Merchant. Is so mysterious but helpful and gives a sense of relief when you find him.
this sphere hunter dude seems to be cool.
Dudette
The merchant is actually a Ganado, it's confirmed in the character model unlockable for him in the original RE4
I would like to point out that while the RE4 Merchant did make that phrase popular, he was not the first merchant to say it. The first merchant to say the phrase "What are ya buying" was alucard's Butler in Castlevania symphony of the night
hehe….THANK YOU!!!
hehe….THANK YOU!!!
hehe….THANK YOU!!!
Farewell for now!
I think I've just realized Merchant might be my favorite side character in any RE game.
Wait, so Potassium Chloride helps keep Plagas away from the shop?!, this is some amazing info I’m not going to be able to stop thinking about now!.
it's always lovely to hear from Suzy
In the remake near the end he says something about himself and his "associates" being grateful. Did capcom confirm that the merchant is more than one person and if yes, what are they? Clones? Infected? An entire faction?
Funny you should mention Dagon. I just saw that movie recently and yeah you do get a resident evil 4 feel to it also
" why couldn't she be the other kind of mermaid with the fish part on top and the lady part on the bottom". When I saw that bedroom scene that's the first thing that came to mind lol.
Sphere Hunter and Ink Ribbon are awesome!
I still subscribe to the theory that there isn't just one Merchant, but it's multiple guys all dressed the same. Of course, the other possibility for how the Merchant always gets somewhere before you is that he's from the area and knows his way around. That, and he's strapped with enough firepower to go wherever the hell he wants.
Leon and the merchant tagging along would been funny
We miss your Livestreams Super Kai Hoping that you're doing well Take care
i liked the line WWWelcome! with the emphasis on the W from the original RE4
yeah in the remake the expand a bit on the merchant. Seems there are a lof of them and they take special jobs too since well they tell Leon that they will pay him when he completees them.
one line thats good is also where hes like years havnt been kind to me, refering to us gamers saying we getting old lol
The Merchant was my favorite, popular, and most awkward Halloween costume - it's hard to keep one of _every_ toy weapon found in 8 different stores velcro'd to the inside of a quick-stitch hooded coat!
3:09
Why did they never use that?? That would’ve been amazing 😂😂
In Number 17-18 [2:13]
In the remake, I think "The Blue Flame Torch" prevents him from harming Merchant. The same trick happens when Ashley lights a blue lantern at the Infected Knight Armor to stop them. Because both Leon and Knight Armor got Parasite Infected. Like Susi mentioned at number 10 [5:07]
That is a new good detail to add to this game.
Wow I never noticed his eyes changing colors in the original 😳
So iconic that even Rodin from Bayonetta quoted the merchant.
Nier Automata has a reference to him too.
Great Collab right here 👍👌!!!
Having played and 100% every single entry in the franchise at their launch, your 2 channels even now manage to highlight new facts, lore and easter eggs that passed me by 😯☺️!!!
Keep up the great work 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I always just thought that the Merchant just wore colored contact lenses to trick the ganados. If you use the PRL 412, he can't be hit with it, despite it targeting literally everything infected with Las Plagas, and destructible props.
One of my favorite characters. He deserves a playable Mercenaries avatar.
Great video as always Kai and thanks to you as well Suzi
Those PCs look sick, especially the T-Virus themed one 🔥
Always great to see collaborations with Sphere Hunter and Ink Ribbon! Hope she'll cover the Outbreak series retrospectives and we'll get a fact list on Jack Krauser one day.
It would be funny if you throw three eggs at the merchant he would rase the prices of weapons and other stuff
A crossover I never expected. Love there channels lol
Fun fact:
The color purple is often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition. Purple also represents meanings of wealth, extravagance, creativity, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic.
Let's be honest, the memes are what made the merchant iconic.
Back then I was this 🤏🏻 close to dress up as Leon (as I'm also dark blonde), whole my then gf would do her part as Ashley. A guy I used to know went to every single convention in town as the merchant (or in Spanish, "el buhonero", which is NOT an usual word). The idea was for me to try to buy condoms from him and he saying his line " NO LUCK, STRANGER!", so I would do the defeated animation. 😅😅
Thanks and kudos to both of you.
Seriously when the whole villiage got bombed I was worried about him and his fancy room
Hi Suzie 😊👋 fancy seeing you here.
One I never hear anyone mention is that the Merchant is originally referred to as The Weapons Dealer in the PS2 game manual. I'm not sure if he's called the same in the Gamecube version's manual, but I would assume at some point Merchant just became the popular name to call him in the community. Though I do wonder where it started 🤔
The Gamecube game came first so if anyone still has the Manual they can check there too.
Never thought I'd see Kai and Suzi doing a collab video but I'm glad they did 😊 both of you please enjoy the rest of your day ❣️
i though, that most uintentionaly iconic character was Lady DD
I didn't think anything of the merchant's setup while my boyfriend and I were playing the game, but when I later watched Carcinogen do a playthrough, I had the same thought about the blue flame. I can't think of any other reason why they wouldn't make it purple as well instead of blue except that it deters las plagas. Of course, that raises the question: if he is also infected, why doesn't the flame bother him? Maybe that's why he's wearing a hood and mask, as a sort of shield for himself while the blue flame is keeping other enemies at a distance. Realistically, it's probably just a re-used asset to save time in design, but it's fun to come up with theories.
What a treat.. Thank you hehehe
2:17 Everyone always says the Merchant is “permanently gone” if you kill him in professional. I’ve played RE4 on every port except Xbox and have killed him on professional 1000s of times and the next merchant is always there. The only time you kill the merchant and he doesn’t show up at the next merchant spot is if you kill him before the cabin he will not be outside the two paths gates
It's just something people made up over the years. Just like how people have said Wesker's silencer on his handgun gives it 5x crit rate. No, the gun is just fully upgraded and the silencer does nothing.
I never get tired of that legendary phrase.
3:52 in the art book for re4 og, it doesn't explain how he's unaffected but it does say he is a Ganado as well! that's why his eyes glow red :3
Ink Ribbon my favourite go to, for everything resident evil lore.
I never heard of the movie Dagon! It would be awesome if you did videos detailing the different books/ movies/ games that have influenced and inspired the Resident Evil games. Great video as always!
love me some Ink Ribbon uploads
Thanks for the episode
I was reading that in the Game "The Evil Within" the upgrade Chair and the Nurse weren´t planned.
it was supposed to be a blackhaired woman in a red coat, wearing a red hat.
She was supposed to have a similiar role to the The Merchant in RE4.
i loved the nurse and upgrade chair shit, gave me that “safe feeling” from RE games
@@luisrosa4316
maybe that is why they changed it.
Perfect combo!
Stranger, Stranger, Stranger now that's a movie!
Hey Ink Ribbon, Resident Evil Survivor was the first game of the franchise I ever played when I was a kid, and it still has my heart even though it's not that good. So I'd love if you could make a facts video about either the title or maybe the protagonist, Ark Thompson.
Thanks for always bringing us awesome content!
Fun fact: the original Resident Evil 4 game manual refers to The Merchant as the "Weapons Dealer". I think it's safe to say what name actually stuck for him.
The purple flame is most likely because of the blue fire. It probably makes them unhostile
I love Suzy
2 of my favorites content creators together ❤️
One interesting theory I heard is that the Merchant was placed there by Wesker to make it easier for Leon to take down Sadler and for Ada to steal the Plaga samples.
Great video as always. I would just say however Suzi at 5:07 when you mention about the lanterns Merchy has. This is something that's been talked about before up to 7 months ago already.
I cant link the examples I gave from Sub-Reddits here as I assume my initial comment was deleted due to the links. However I dont think you can take credit for that one. Just thought I should mention that since you asked us to thank you for something I believe the community were already discussing/aware of.
WELCOME!!
Got some rare things on sale STRANGER!
Heheh, thank you!
Suzi is adorable, Kai is adorable, so nice to see you both!
The merchant sounded excited at the end of separate ways in the remake that Las iluminatios would be eradicated. He said he was "briming with excitement, your actually going to do it, stranger!" It sounded like his goal was to help any 3rd party in their fight against the plaga. He also mentions in the request to kill the golden knight that the golden knight took out their best, implying he had/has a team. He also wants you to do things like kill rats, shoot medallions, kill strong threats, do things to disgrace the enemy, etc. Makes me think that he was planning on claiming all the estate that Los illuminatios owned, but that's speculation. His real goal could have been righteous, or greedy, or both. The mystery surrounding him what makes him interesting and loved, besides his personality.
Not to be that guy but it’s Los illuminados
Disclaimer, no merchants were killed in the making of this video
The T-virus build was chef's kiss. Absolutely gorgeous rig
I never had the thought of killing him in the OG RE4.
The Resident evil and horror game duo is amazing
Here's additional information: The merchant in the trial version of re4 original was making a discount The option appears when you do not have enough money to purchase an item I made a video about it on my channel
I follow you both and love your content. I would love to hear you two discussing anything re. Would love a podcast. I'm a fan of you both. Please keep it up. This video was a welcome respite from an awfully busy day working at a local hospital. Thank you both
I have a theory on the identity of the Merchant...I made a video on it, but will sum it up here. I think Ada hired him to help aid Leon - not only does this help keep her boy toy safe, but it helps her in using Leon to complee her mission. In return, the Merchant earns money and a whole village himself - this explains him setting up shops that are permenant such as the shooting range, but it also explains why he has side quests that are oriented around cleaning up the place (rats, medallions, enemies, etc.). Ada's intel on the place could of been shared with the Merchant, thus explaining how he knows the area so well. Lastly...just listen to the way he talks to Ada in Sepeeate Ways. He acts like he knows her.
Great video though man! Can't wait to see more.
Every Clock Tower!
8:13 i'm excited to see a 25 facts video about Alyssa Ashcroft 😮
Man you guys are like the Batman & Robin of survival horror games. Also, you guys need to play State of Decay and its sequel State of Decay 2. They’re basically open world survival horror games where a group of survivors are surviving a zombie apocalypse while exploring the countryside. Picture it like resident evil meets grand theft auto.
We need a 50 facts video for the very first zombie you encounter in the first game.
Sphere Hunter! Yes! 😍😍😍😍
Dagon is a movie from Spain, encantado de ver cosas de mi pais🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦👍
I think it's time you did a video on Major Jack Krauser 💪🏻🗡
I hope there's a merchant in RE5 remake
Awh what a nice surprise 😭 heyy Suzi ❤️
Would love to see you do a vid on 30 facts about outbreak file 3. like one specifically dedicated to cut content. Apparently they even had split screen multiplayer planned for it.
A true icon! I wish we got the RE6 Leon outfit for RE4R 😫😭 (maybe in RE6R then lol) and I can totally imagine Wesker saying "we need a Majini to dress like that one guy I once encountered in Spain!" to Excella in RE5R 🤭
Also, I wish we got to unlock him in Mercenaries with infinite weapons instead of Leon's RE2R R.P.D outfit 🥲👉🏻👈🏻
I hope to see more of him, the Duke, and their other connections in future RE games 🤞🏻
Nice collab 🙏🏼
