- A job I've looking forward to was adding some much needed lights and details to the block of flats I built a few years ago. While there is still more to add I think the building is looking quite a bit more interesting now.

Brilliant as ever, the flats need a couple of “flickering TV screen” LEDS (if they exist 😊) You have excellent observational skills which is key to all the best railway models plus the ability to recreate what you have seen.

Yes, some people watch with no other lights on, but perhaps we're getting too 'involved' Now where did l put my binoculars?....
Something I'll be looking into in future. Its needs to be very dim with fading rather flickering. Flickering in model form will look like someone is welding in their front room! Cheers

This is stunning. You have a filmmakers eye for lighting and atmosphere. I almost feel like I'm back there 35- 40 years ago as a 25 year old, waiting for a late train to... wherever. I'm glad you say you'll be adding a couple of access/ lift motor housings to the roof, because that was the only thing missing
Ventilation/Flue exits also would be up there.

I'd suggest leaving the office block lighting either warm white or slightly more yellow... The only reason being that they were typically fluorescent tube lit rather than tungsten bulbs like houses and flats... The block of flats looks fantastic (or should that be hideous) in it's finished state! Brilliant work once again with the attention to detail. Shame that satellite TV wasn't really a thing back then as dishes always look interesting. Look forward to the next video!
I've done just that for the signal box and offices. A slight warming rather than full on orange. Cheers

An insightful update episode. That's what I enjoy most of your channel.
Your use of a rod as an electronic conduit was something my Grandfather (old enough to be your 2d Great-Grandpa) had taught me back in the 1950's. But in my misdirected modeling mastery I had forgotten this simple technique. And that is a criminal loss. IT MUST BE RETURNED TO MY BAG OF GIFTS. Thank you.
A couple additions to your future. About those printed Black & White Curtains. Before you start cutting & pasting them out, scan them master into your PDF files. Then you have multiples should you need them.
Next before glueing them to your structure, take a colored Highlighter Marker to add various hues to the curtains. You can add an opaque paint to the backside to block light bleed. However, a slight translucence increases a natural depth to the facade.
Also, you could cover the entire interior window with Tulle. The fabric comes in numerous colors & density. So multiple layers of tulle will defuse the interior lighting even more. Just be cautious not to overdue the layers!
Also, I had a thought that may not fit in the Apartment Scene. Though it would be where it belongs.
A ground level Football (soccer) Pitch.
As I was watching the structure on the workshop bench it felt to me, if this were a family based residency the street area would be a makeshift neighborhood footballer's play/practice area for their future notoriety.
But then the distruction of my dreams hit. When you returned the complex to it's nest I saw the lower floors were behind the railways stone wall. DASHED!?!
Maybe there may be another home for your MODEL CHILDREN to develop into their future Model Manchester United or Chelsea?
That would give you the opportunity to animate a high flying high kick. And so on.
In any event thank you for reminding me of solid post electronics. But most of all reminding me of my GrandDad. And Thank You for that too.

Richard take a bow, opening titles are brilliant. The flats are spot on, I was born in 1960 and remember this type of architecture. The flats remind me of the type depicted in the 1960’s children’s programme Mary Mungo and Midge. Well done Richard.

Having a different colour on your inside walls would also make the lights look different colour.
No need to spend a long time on decorating the interior, but a but of wall paper can do a lot.
Also something worth to consider is lighting one room through a door from another room: just a piece of card with a door cut between the 2 rooms.

Those night time shots in the beginning and end were just top class, fantastic work.
We just watched it. Ealing Broadway was wife's local station a few years earlier. Then we were in Southall from '85 to '87 when daughter born. Date at start, two weeks after son born. Certainly takes us back!
Capturing the era convincingly well, please know your skills, effort and narration are much appreciated. Not just enjoyable but a tutorial with some excellent how to do its' and ideas.

This building really catches the time period now.
In those commercial buildings I would let the light colour of the LEDs as they are, this kind of buildings were mostly lit with fluorescent light tubes and the whiter shade of light captures this well in my opinion.
I've slightly warmed the LEDs in those building with a single coat of paint. It contrasts nicely with the full orange in the flats. Cheers
That opening just captures a period of time so perfectly. I think the only was I can describe it is, Like watching early Touch of Frost, all it needs is David Jason in his hat investigating a crime scene on the station. I know your layout is a few years earlier but so much of that late 80's aesthetic just carried on into the early 90's

Superb creation of detail and an explanation of not just what you've done, but why and how. Absolutely expert filming too and could easily be dropped into a documentary or film of that period.
Ive watched this several times now, you really are doing amazing things for our hobby. We in Memphis cant wait to see whats next

I assume the reason the Scale Model Scenery curtains are monotone is because most curtains are monotone from the side that is seen from the outside. Most curtains are lined with white lining (or off-white), and the colour / design is only visible inside the room. But it's one of those modelling oddities that some things look 'better' even when they're not strictly prototypical, and this is a great example.
I had a landlord who, in the lease, specified all window treatments must show white or off-white from the street.
Lined curtains? Not everyone could afford them so backlit the pattern was visible.

Great video Richard. One thing about the era your layout, and my layout, is set in, regards satellite dishes. Back in the late 80s or early 1990s, the now defunct Kirkcaldy District Council, before districts were abolished in 1996 and Fife Council took over everything, made it clear, that anyone living in a block of flats, and who wanted to put up a satellite dish, had to apply for planning permission to do so! That could be another reason for the lack of dishes, in the photos you showed us! The rule was later relaxed, and planning permission was not required. One suggestion for the balconies, where there's two next to each other, possibly two neighbours chatting to each other?
Congratulations. Your model rivals in detail, accuracy and build quality with some of the best sponsored model shows around the world. It has museum quality. That comes to show that love commitment and dedication can sometimes better big funding. For that alone you should always be commended.

The atmospheric opening to the presentation was absolutely brilliant - I felt that I was actually standing on the platform. The lighting is very effective. I have just finished a much smaller block of flats for my layout and I know how much effort went into that just to make the window dressings all different! I have quite a few flat roofed buildings too and I will give the fine ballast a go at some point. One method I have used recently was from a Canadian modeller Boomer using nothing more than unembossed toilet paper and paint. Very effective. Cheers

I think you could scan some of those B&W curtains, import the scan into a paint program, and tint them various shades of beige, blue, and gold, then print them with a color printer. That would make drapes that looked a bit more three dimensional than the blue and red card.
For that matter, you can probably find usable pictures or drawings of curtains already in various colors online.

Another super video; great progress. Re the lighting. just an observation, most offices and some domestic buildings (especially in kitchens) in the 1980s and 1990s were using fluorescent lighting. This was in the main white - 3500K colour temp. so was quite white, possibly aside of the nicotine staining on fluorescent tubes in offices. I know well, as I was working in these places from the 1970s onwards. Lounge areas in houses did use some forms of subdued lighting due to light shades over tungsten lamps, but circular fluorescent tube lighting was still popular such domestic settings, such as living rooms. I really do enjoy your layout updates, which takes me back to those now, long lost times.
Love the opening shot on this video Richard, its as if you are standing on the platform waiting for your train to take you home, well done. The lighting level on the flats (once coloured) looks spot on. I have used the same curtains from Scale Model Scenery but used my grand children's crayons to colour them and I found it still left the `lines` in the curtain to add to the effect. Its a different world when you see it in the dark, please keep them coming regards Barry..

I live this channel especially seeing as I grew up during the 1980’s in Ealing- I recognised the station straight away.
the atmosphere from the openeing "shots" is such, that none of us have any desire to go back in time.....at least not the 80s......haha....
I love your opening montages. They're growing longer and better every video. In my minds eye I can see a pre-title sequence for an episode of Dempsey and Makepeace or The Paradise Club or some other 80s/90s crime drama show

I like the lighting of the flats and station streets etc alot as it really reflects lighting of the era, everything back in those days was not overly bright during night time , lighting all tehded to ha e a yellowy hue to it ,none of your blinding white leds back then!! .maybe one of the flats could have a homage to Del and Rodney and the infamous stolen airport dish!!

I was thinking with the lighting. Quite a few of those type of buildings may have had flourescent tubes in kitchen and lounge areas in late 70's and early 80's. Bedrooms probably would have had incandescent globes. In future buildings it might break them up a bit adding a few cooler white lights inside those sort of rooms to represent flourescent lighting :).

I do enjoy watching your video’s. I love the attention detail. I used to work for British Steel many years ago. We definitely had a rail line into the factory that bought in the lengths of steel. Our company turned the steel into crankshafts. It was out of use by the 80’s & in a state of much disrepair. Just a thought ….
