自上世纪开埠以来，许多南下华人来到Bukit Mertajam落地生根。那时的华裔工人们离乡背井，不太通晓当地语言，就用“Dua Shua Kah“（潮州话大山脚的意思），利用当地地形来命名这一片土地，且他们世世代代的故事都围绕着这座大山的脚底下展开。
其中每逢农历七月，一定会有一座宏伟且壮观的大士爷金身坐镇于伯公埕，供大山脚的居民供奉与祈愿。这一项习俗也在不知不觉中传承了超过百年。
大士爷，面燃大士，其实并不是众人眼中恐怖的鬼王，祂所代表不仅仅是一个神祇的形象而已，更多的是祂承载了众多信徒的祈愿与信念。祂是权威，是使者，是职责，是希望，是慈悲。祂带领着被冥冥众生祝福的亡灵离开人间，顺道带走亡灵曾滞留再人间的怨念与执着。
为此胜会得以顺利举办，大山脚居民自发性聚集当地的12经济大体系的组织为成员，于1998年成立了 “大山脚埠众盂兰胜会理事会”。此理事会的标志由12个圆，组成一个大圈。寓意着12个相关组织与理事会团结一致，万众一心，完成每一年的盂兰盛会。
随着大士爷金身每一年的增长，大山脚居民对其的信仰也日渐深厚。他们其实并没有过多复杂的心思，只是每年的农历七月一定会拜祂，祈求来年一切顺遂，并把祂的神迹一代一代的传下去。而这一切都渐渐的变成了每年一次的习惯。
大山脚，不仅是一个名字，更是一代人对历史的记忆点，是他们对未来生活地仰望。大士爷，不仅是一个神祇，更是像一个团结与相聚的理由，让信徒暂且回到这片土地，驻足祈愿，净化自己，重新出发。

Since the last century, a lot of Chinese migrants settled down in Bukit Mertajam. They were not familiar with the local languages, so they used “Dua Shua Kah”, in TeoChew dialect means “foot of a big hill”, to refer to this place, which precisely described its geographical location.
Bukit Mertajam is a place full of historical and religious festival. One of them is Yu Lan Festival (Hungry Ghost Festival). Every July in the lunar calendar, there will be a gigantic King of Hades located at Pek Kong Cheng temple in Bukit Mertajam, and people from different places will come along and worship Him. King of Hades, also known as “Tai Su Yeah” in Hokkien dialect, plays a significant role in this Yu Lan Festival.
To ensure the festival runs smoothly, 12 associations in Bukit Mertajam gathered together and established a council called “the Bukit Mertajam Yu Lan Festival Organisation”. There are 12 circles that form a big circle in the logo of this council, which means the 12 associations will always work together, to carry out the Yu Lan Festival ceremony.
People in Bukit Mertajam believe that, with a sincere heart, Tai Su Yeah will bless one with peace and good life throughout the year. They will worship Him every July in the lunar calendar, and this is a tradition that has been preserved and practicing for over a decade.
Bukit Mertajam, is not only a name of a town. It is a place that ties everyone's memories, a place where keeps hope and belief alive.
Tai Su Yeah, is more than a religion. He reunites the believers, to come back to their home, and starts anew for a greater future.

Excellent documentary. This is important work documenting the living history of local traditions and customs. Whether the belief is true or not, the spirit and unity of the believers are real. And that is of the most benefit.
