    I got my license a week ago, and I haven't gotten gas since then because I've been scared to embarrass myself lol. This video helped alot! My tank is almost empty so it's kind of a make or break moment for me right now. (I have irrational anxiety lol) In fact I'm 23 and JUST got my license because my anxiety about driving was so bad 😭I still don't like it and I just go straight to work and straight home, but every day it gets a little easier. I only had 4 hours of driving experience before my drive test so I'm just like a baby bird pushed out of the nest before my feathers even came in! But I'm still really glad I got my license. Walking 20 minutes home with groceries is NO fun. (Though I haven't gone shopping yet lol)

      Congrats on getting your license! And your anxiety is not irrational. I didn't get my license until I was 23 either because I was scared to to drive. Also, I've been driving around with a low tire pressure warning for weeks because I have anxiety about airing up my tires. We all navigate this world in our own way and some things are easier for us than others. Good for you for putting yourself out there and tackling things that are a bit scary!

    Chiming in here. I am 51, got my license at 31, and have never once had to pump my own gas. I lived in Jersey until a few years ago when we moved to another state; I always had my husband get gas for me, because I swore I would never pump my own gas. he is out of town and I was near empty and panicking. I came across your video and felt so much better. I got to the gas station and someone was parked at the pump for about 20 minutes. It was obvious they had long been finished getting gas, but wanted to get breakfast , so I was waiting and waiting which made my anxiety even worse. It took me a little minute to figure out the little latch on the pump. I could hear that the gas was going in, so I know I was good to go. I was finished and wrestled with the pump to get it back on its thingy. I was so excited and got back into the car when I heard a little beep. I thought maybe I had been taking too long and someone had to be somewhere. But then I realized I forgot to put the cap back on and close the little door to my gas tank. It was a good Samaritan letting me know this, and he gave me a wave and a chuckle, and all was well with the world. It feels good to come here and say that I did it. I really don’t think anyone else could understand how good it feels to overcome a hurdle like this, which comes easy to most. thank you so much for this video, I really appreciate it!

    What if I don't want to fill up whole tank? How can I select specific amount of gallon or money for gas to be filled ?
    All gas stations have that automatic shut off nozel? In case if there is not automatic shut off, how can we decide when to shut off nozel to avoid spilling?

    • @howdoi1851
      @howdoi1851  Před 4 lety +4

      If you want to fill it to a specific amount, say $10, don't lock the lever in place and just squeeze the handle until you hit $10 and then let it go and it will stop.
      All gas stations have automatic shut off, so when your tank is full, it automatically stops pumping. In all of the years I have pumped gas all over the country, I have never had one that didn't shut off.

    • @howdoi1851

    Very informative with a healthy amount of wit thrown in to entertain the viewer! People in Oregon and New Jersey take note! However, I am not sure it is wise to use a cell phone right next to a pump while waiting for the tank to fill. I have heard something about it being possibly dangerous? Maybe an old wives tale. I never pay at the pump with debit anymore, always have cash in hand for that.
    Not because of fraud or card skimmers even though it's a possibility, it's because of the up to $100 hold they put on your account which can be for several days.
    I learned this lesson the hard way when I took a long road trip( long in miles but short in days). I had about $500 in my checking account and filled up using my debit card 4 times for about $35 each time. Spent around $100 on food. So I went to make another small purchase and was surprised that my card was declined. Instead of the $140 I thought I spent on gas, $400 was held from my account. Of course it was credited later, but I didn't have the money I thought I had when I needed it.
    Now on road trips I make a point to buy my food at a supermarket and get cash back which I use to pay for gas.

    Sometimes the recommended fuel grade is stated on a label in the cap/fill area of the vehicle. If not, the information is contained in the owner's manual that's in the glove box, or if the manual is missing, most manuals can be found online for most vehicles. It will state the recommended fuel grade (87 in most vehicles in the USA, with exceptions, as noted in the owner's manual). I pump my own gas no matter what, no matter what state. I had an attendant in NJ spill gas on my then-new convertible, so I took the squeegee and cleaned it off (I had just waxed the car and I still own it to this day and it's still in nice shape). After an argument, he saw my side, and then after that, he would let me pump my own gas and just give me the wave when I pulled in. I told him. "Now you don't have to come out here in the heat of summer or cold of winter". He laughed and said, "My friend, I'm from Egypt originally. I know what hot is. LOL". I also do all my own car work, so no need to check anything. LOL.
    Technically, you shouldn't be using a cell phone near a pump. It's a better time to check things like your washer fluid, clean the windshield and windows, and with sufficient cool-down time, the tire pressure and oil level (assuming that you didn't do that at home when you wash the car or service the car, as I often do). Also, if you're paying cash, typically, you'll have to give the money to the attendant inside and they set the pump so it will not exceed the amount you give them. You say, "Let me get $20 on pump # (whatever number pump it is that you're at)." Also, if the pump retention lever is broken/inoperative, you can usually wedge the cap into that area to keep the pump running. I normally just manually hold it. Sometimes, due to the angle of the pump, you may have to play with the angle of how the pump nozzle is inserted into the filler neck because it can give a false sense to the pump that the tank is full and shut it off prematurely. Some vehicles have a retention strap so the cap can't be lost. If not, hold the cap in your hand or put it on the holder on the fuel door (if the vehicle has one) so you don't forget to put it back. Leaving the cap off can set the "Check Engine" light.
    One final thing I do is scan my receipts on an app like Fetch (there are others). After a time, you earn some points for gift cards to the major retailers out there. It doesn't cost the consumer anything and since you're buying the items (gas, groceries, other goods), you might as well take advantage of it.
    You also want to go to a station to does a lot of volume as there is less of a chance that you can get bad fuel as the product is moving. Also, avoid getting fuel when the tanker truck is in the station refilling the tanks.

    • @howdoi1851
      @howdoi1851  Před rokem

      When you prepay and give the cashier cash, they set the pump to shut off at the amount you have paid. So if you say, "I'd like $10 on pump 3," the cashier will take your money and then set the pump to shut off when it hits $10. You just pump your gas and it should automatically shut off at $10. And when it shuts off, you're done. You don't need to go back into the store or anything.
