    Saw this on my recommended and decided to give it a watch! Congrats on playing Pikmin for the first time! I've been a long time fan since childhood, but seeing others play these games i love so much since childhood is very fascinating to me. I still love Pikmin 1, but it's very jank to go back to. However, replaying it over and over is where the real fun is. Pikmin games are designed to be replayed constantly for better times or scores. You took all 30 days to beat the game, but how much better can you be on your second playthrough? Throughout all my time playing, I'm pretty sure i'm down to 9 ingame days during my last playthrough.
    I hope you give Pikmin 2 a shot as well! It shakes up the formula a lot and pretty much quadruples in size for a first playthrough. Pikmin 3 is a back to basics Pikmin 1-ish experience, but with incredibly refined controls and mechanics. Pikmin 4 is like if you took Pikmin 2 and literally tripled it. There's so much enjoyment out of each and every one of these games. Pikmin 2 is my favorite, maybe because of nostalgia, and Pikmin 3 is my favorite to replay because I can just sit down and get through the whole game in less than an afternoon.
    And that's not to say 4 is bad, because it's quite the opposite. There's so much to love about the whole series, and Hey! Pikmin isn't even that bad either! Even if you don't play the other games, I'm glad you have the first one a shot! Enjoy this new Subscriber! :)

    I still remember when it took me almost 30 days to get all the ship parts. In my opinion, Pikmin 1 has always had the best atmosphere and story. None of the other games have managed to capture that same energy of being stranded on a planet alone with salvation seemingly out of reach. And, rather than playing as a fearless explorer or superpowered hero fighting against the forces of evil, you play as a simple loving father who wants nothing more than to be reunited with his family at home, desperately fighting for survival against the grasp of mother nature herself. There's something so viscerally real about Olimar's character in this game that you just don't get in any other Nintendo Series, and I kind of wish future games expanded upon it a little more.

My first playthrough was rushed as hell out of worry for the small man who misses his wife. My tiny self couldn't beat the emperor bulblax- But my experience with the game was amazing because of how much of it was spent trying to do as much at once as possible. Pikmin 2s tutorial goes into the second day, and by the third day it’s not really a tutorial but more of a “hey don’t forget you can do this,” although sunset is introduced in day 3. In Pikmin 4, it also lasts a couple days, but it feels so stupidly long in comparison, I think because of the Olimar part beforehand.
      Pikmin 3 has by far the best tutorial. It really only feels like a tutorial on the first day. By the second, you can go as fast as you want.

    I wanted to say a couple things just bc I like talking abt Pikmin lmao
    Ok first, this game actually only requires 25 ship parts to beat the game. Not any 25, a specific 25 (and the final one isn’t one of them, making it the first game I’ve ever heard of with a technically optional final boss). However, if you wanna beat the game in under 30 days, you need to get all 30, otherwise you gotta wait it out. I’m pretty sure at the end of the game there’s a list of all 30 parts, and 5 are in a different color at the end. Those are the optional ones. The game never tells you they’re optional, but yeah they just are lol.
    Ok so for Pikmin 2, the gameplay is essentially the same but radically different, making it a divisive title. Idk if you’ve started to play it yet, but I’m not gonna spoil anything important. Still, MINOR SPOILERS BELOW
    So Pikmin 2 is a much longer game, with 201 collectibles rather than 30. The way this is done isn’t through bigger areas, as Pikmin 2 actually reuses the areas in Pikmin 1, but they’re remixed with different starting locations, terrain changes, enemy changes, and treasure changes (unfortunate but it actually works pretty well imo, I couldn’t tell for years. The very first area is new tho, and one will be really hard to tell if it reuses old maps.) Rather, it’s done with caves, very similar to what you might’ve seen in the Pikmin 4 demo. These caves, especially in Pikmin 2, act more as dungeon crawlers, where you’re much more focused on keeping your Pikmin alive and getting through rather than time management (time won’t pass). At first, these caves will be pretty damn easy, but trust me, they pick up in difficulty pretty swiftly at some point, I won’t say when tho, although they always fluctuate. But watch out, a lot of of these caves pull really dirty tricks. To this day they still screw me over, I’ve even clipped some they were so good. Still very fun for me tho, way funnier than just losing pikmin to some big enemy with a ton of health.
    Oh, and there’s one cave in particular to watch out for. Won’t say which, but trust me, it’ll seem off before you even enter it :)

    @lukers9819 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Hello GSpider! I enjoyed your video! I am glad that you enjoyed Pikmin 1 despite its shortcomings. I do have one thing I'd like to say about one portion of the video. I have no problem with you disliking the limited number of worlds in Pikmin 1. That is a fair critique. But the comparison of Pikmin's areas to Mario levels does not work. Pikmin is a fundamentally different game genre to Mario. Asking if we would want to play a single Mario level forever is obviously a horribly boring idea, but how does that idea compute over to Pikmin? Why doesn't the legend of Zelda have as many worlds as Mario has levels? Why doesn't Fortnite have as many battle arenas? Why doesn't Minecraft have as many individually built worlds to start in as Mario levels? The point is that none of these games make sense with the Mario level format. Nor do they match Pikmin's format. The games simply don't function the same. The worlds should be designed to match the style of gameplay in the game they are in.
    If you would like to hear my thoughts on why the worlds are designed the way they are in Pikmin, you can let me know. Otherwise, that is all. I still want to let you know that your opinion on not liking the number of Pikmin worlds is still valid. I just don't think you can compare apples to oranges, that is, Pikmin worlds to Mario levels.

    • @GSpider
      @GSpider  Před 7 měsíci

      I see what you’re saying, and I totally understand it! I guess I just didn’t do a good job explaining it in the video, but initially, I had the impression it was going to be a level system similar to Mario based off of what people have said about the game, so it was a disappointment when it wasn’t and I saw the potential of mixing smaller levels with larger levels. And games like Minecraft, Fortnite, Zelda, they’re all adventure games to some degree similar to Pikmin. You walk around the world until you die, then you respawn and explore the world. The only difference is that Pikmin 1 kicks you out of the levels after a certain time. Although still an adventure game, it can be treated slightly differently I feel because of that time limit. I think a mix between larger levels and levels with one ship part could have been fun! It can be beneficial to give the player a very short break from the world they’ve revisited a few times already by giving them new things. Zelda has dungeons, Minecraft has bosses, structures and villages that can spawn, and Fortnite has quests you can complete mid-game. It not only gives the player something new to complete with the same gameplay loop they’re familiar with, but challenges them to think about other strategies that can be used with the same tools they’ve had the whole game. Does Pikmin having 5 levels make the game boring or worse? Absolutely not! The few levels it had were fantastic and impressively designed, especially for their first Pikmin game! But could it have benefited from a couple more levels similar to the 5th world? For me, yes.

    • @lukers9819
      @lukers9819 Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@GSpider Thank you for the kind response! I do think I understand what you are trying to say much better now. And you are in luck! Pikmin 2 and especially Pikmin 4 have these breaks in gameplay that you are looking for! And clearly they recognize the value of these different styles of gameplay, or they would not add them! Going back to Pikmin 1 though, I would like to explain what the Pikmin designers had in mind when they created the worlds, and why having more worlds in that game with a single ship part doesn't mesh with their plan.
      The fundamental vision when designing Pikmin 1 was to make a game that encouraged the player to complete tasks as fast as they are able to. Learning how to manage the Pikmin well isn't as much about preventing deaths as it is about saving time. The 30 day limit was an external factor that encouraged the player to play efficiently, but the world design in Pikmin 1 was also built to encourage this naturally. You actually did a very good job of noting this in your video. There are many shortcuts in the worlds, especially the Forest Navel that are totally optional. But some of these shortcuts are worth pursuing if it will help save you time. This pursuit of being as efficient as possible was meant to carry over into repeat playthroughs of the game. The player now knows exactly where all of the ship parts are in the world, but how can they get them all using fewer days? The surplus of shortcut options now becomes a question of which ones are worth opening to save time and which ones aren't? And what other ways can I cut corners to save time, like sneaking past certain enemies rather than killing them, collecting the ship parts in a different order, or trying to complete a few different tasks at once. In fact, as you improve, multiple different tasks should always be worked on at the same time rather than just having all 100 Pikmin in one group doing everything together. Suddenly an area that once took 10 days to complete now takes 8. And then on my next attempt I completed it is 6 days. Somehow, it is actually possible to complete every world in the game in just 1 in-game day each, but that requires an incredible level of strategy and near perfect execution. But not everyone needs to be THAT good, the creators just wanted to make a game that encouraged players to improve on their own personal best time. According to the creator, at one point the game was about 1.5 times the length it is now, but they shortened it because they felt the longer length would discourage the player from playing again and again to beat their score.
      Now moving on to worlds like world 5, where there is only a single ship part. This world is very linear, as there is only one way to get the single ship part that is here. So right off the bat, we have largely lost the ability to innovate our efficiency in this world. The primary way to save time is better execution. It took me maybe 3 attempts to manage to get the ship part in that world in just one day. And that was it. Nowadays, it takes next to no effort to get that ship part in just 1 day, and there is no room for any improvement in the world. Contrast that with the Distant Spring (aka world 4 or the water world), which took over a dozen attempts until I finally managed to complete the world in just 2 days. The feeling was incredible and had me working down to the last second, but I actually did it. And it is not easily repeatable either, as I have to be locked in and on my game to do it again. But even though I have done it once, succeeding at it again feels good. I truly have no idea how some people complete it in 1 day, but I am proud of what I have accomplished, and I was proud before this when I initially lowered it from 12 days to complete the Distant Spring to 7. The point is, having a single part in a world leaves very little room for innovation and improvement. Repeat playthroughs of this world (which was a major aspect of the design philosophy for Pikmin 1) leave very little room for growth for the player. You could say that these worlds could be made bigger and have multiple shortcut options and still take multiple days to collect the 1 ship part unless you are extremely efficient, but then you are just designing the worlds we already have, but with only 1 ship part instead of multiple. So in this way, designing more worlds that only had 1 part in it goes against specifically Pikmin 1's design philosophy.
      Note that I said "specifically", because this is not the case with Pikmin 2. There are dozens of "mini worlds" known as sublevels in caves, that are perhaps similar to the levels that you envisioned Pikmin of having. Meanwhile the emphasis on efficiency has been entirely forgotten. There is always only 1 way to collect everything, and there are even large sections of the game that time doesn't advance. This is why in just my second playthrough of Pikmin 2, I actually managed to beat it in the minimum days possible, and I have tried to play Pikmin 1 dozens of times and am still nowhere near the minimum day amount. Subsequent games have each treated efficiency differently as well, with 3 being more like 1, and 4 being more like 2.
      None of this is to say that one type of game is objectively better. From what you have described, it sounds like Pikmin 2 and especially 4's type of gameplay may suit you more. Which is totally fair, and many people will agree with you. I personally consider the focus on improving efficiency that the first game featured so prominently the peak of Pikmin gameplay. But I understand that this style of gameplay is not what everyone likes in a Pikmin game. Everyone has different tastes after all, and there is clearly merit in both gameplay styles. I can happily say that Pikmin 4 put in a tremendous amount of effort to appeal to fans of both styles of gameplay. I hope that I explained this in a way that wasn't confusing and that you have a wonderful day!

      @lukers9819 that was a lot more info than I thought I needed, but you described what I’ve been missing really well. I never thought about the replayability and efficiency of each world. For a first playthrough, having little one-part levels is fun. But I can see how they may be annoying or too easy on your second or third playthrough. I did play through the last level a couple times as well and after the second try, the magic was kinda lost. But anywho, I really appreciate that perspective on the game, and I will absolutely be using this comment as a resource if I end up making a video on Pikmin 2. Thank you so much for writing this all out, and you have a wonderful day as well!! :]
