- Flat mites have been all the talk of late, and one of my subscribers reached out to me to tell me she thinks I might have them. In this video I will show you how I treated my plants.

OMG, I am soooo excited that this information is finally coming out! I have had this issue for a few years and searched and searched and flat mites never came up. This is exactly what has been happening to my hoyas and I have tossed several as a result. I have that microscope as well, my problem is that I can't get it to be still enough to see things well because it didn't come with a very good stand.
I've had great success since using the Sulphur. 💚

Did you treat the underside of the leaves? Just curious.

I’m so glad I found you! I’ve been doing some math to adjust the ratio of water and sulfur to spray my Hoyas, I don’t have a huge number of them so I didn’t want to mix up even a half gallon….. instead I’m going to dig out a small paint brush and dry paint. ❤😊 hoping this helps my callistophylla finally grow.
How did it work. My calistophylla hasn’t been growing either. It flowered though recently. I’m just going to do the spray I think
❤ Thank you so much for your tips. I think you are right about the microscope, not really necessary. The only way you can see them is on a really big screen. I found one yesterday, the bugger was even moving..... So looks like sulfur and I are going to be good friends for a while. Thank you again.

Did you see Doug Chamberlain's video on CZcams? Check it out. I treated mine two days ago, and I woke up and one had a lot of new growth points. I have only checked in on a few so far. It's crazy how fast they start growing.

Oh, I didn’t realise they were red! I used the microscope 🔬 a while ago and saw wee red dots, but didn’t worry! I’m such a doofus! That’s what I bought the bloody thing for… anyway, I have since started treating with Sulfur and am about half way thru my collection. Another year to go and they’ll be done once (joke). Jeez, it is so tedious! I found other mites clearly having a picnic on my heutschkeliana blooms. Bastards 💚💚💚

I just found some on my macrophylla....has the same stubby thing happening with new growth falling off, haven't even had them that long .....so sad , but really glad I came across your video too to see how you are using the sulphur , I have seen knot dudes video, betsy begonia also has one. Thank you, Grawnya for the wonderful tips! I will be searching for it at the local hardware store now. Like you, I thought it was so expensive on Amazon so I chose to use the hot water bath instead. So far that's working well for me. I have new growth on my Michele that wasn't doing anything all summer long. 💚

Have you tried Clove Oil diluted with water? Learned about this from an Olive Orchard, this was the one ingredient I recognized I could purchase. I've been using it on all kinds of insects. Ants, roches, spiders, mealies. It's organic!
How many drops of essential oil to how much water? I sprayed some plants with some once and the leaves were damaged even though I turned off the lights after. Do you add soap so it emulsifies?

Wow I knew something was going on with a few of my Hoyas. I’m pretty sure I seen red pepper like dots. Def gonna try the sulfur. I had great results awhile back using diemataiocs earth (. I’m very sure I butchered the spelling.). Lol

Just an FYI….I found microscopic mites on some of my Hoya, but they were white rather than red. They create the same kind of damage though. Attacking the new growth and leaving nubby growth in their wake. Treating the same way with sulfer and hoping for the best. Thinking maybe they are broad mites instead of the flat mites, but really not sure.

Yes broad mites! they are much harder to see than the red ones.

I think Tenuipalpidae are what's commonly called flat mites, the red guys that do very distinct looking damage on the underside of leaves. Tarsonemidae are the white ones that are much harder to spot and seem to live on the growing points.

I’ve used that microscope with my iphone and iPad and you don’t need to use the cord. The flat mites are tiny red dots that don’t move ..
Mine isn't wifi compatible, I must take a look again 💚
Do you also apply on the leaves? Is it ok if I use the same brush for all the hoyas without washing the brush one after another? I was gonna do the spray but it's so much hassle. Painting with the powder looks way simpler on your video. Thanks for this helpful tips!
Initially I only did the stems but I noticed some darkening on the leaves so I dusted those leaves. Yes, I use the same brush, I didn't wash it between applications

I got my sulphur at Home Hardware. It says $9.99 on their website but it rings up at about $8. Cheapest I've found in CA.

Maybe that’s what I have with some of my hoyas. I have some that don’t grow at all! I will check mine with the microscope. I have many at home because I am a biologist, addicted to buying microscopes online.💚

@@jungleflowerscanada5384 all of the handheld ones are pretty hard to focus because we need to keep a steady hand while adjusting the focus. They are, however, the best option for a living plant that we cannot position on a stage under the objectives. If I see any flat mites I will take pictures and send them to you.

Yes, I got growth on both plants that hadn't grown.
