To answer some of your questions and provide some background:
j-hope began as a street dancer before learning how to rap and write music when he joined BTS. One of his greatest hip-hop role models has always been J.Cole. j-hope created the phrase "hope world" from J.Cole's famous "Cole world" and uses it in his music, as well as named his studio Hope World, and even called his first mixtape Hope World (including the song "Hope World"). In BTS' 2014 song "Hip Hop Phile," j-hope raps about his idols that inspired him to make music and shouts out J.Cole and "Friday Night Lights."
BTS members have always released solo music in addition to their activities as a group. j-hope has two albums - the previously mentioned mixtape "Hope World" from 2018 and his official album "Jack in the Box" from 2022. Fun fact: j-hope headlined Lollapalooza in Chicago last year where he performed his songs as a solo for the first time, and he met J.Cole for the first time while there. There's footage of his performance and him meeting J.Cole in his documentary "J-Hope in the Box" which you can watch on Disney+.
BTS began as a hip-hop group and have since covered every genre - they are a genre themselves. But their roots have always been hip-hop. There are 3 rappers and 4 singers. In 2013, only weeks after their debuted and weeks after J.Cole dropped the song "Born Sinnner," BTS remade the song with their own lyrics and called in "Born Singer." It was always on Soundcloud until 2022 when they officially got the permission to include it on their anthology album "Proof."
I highly recommend reacting to BTS' performance of Born Singer from last year (put the captions on!): czcams.com/video/oH4IZw9PYgk/video.html&ab_channel=BTSPurpleYou
For context of "on the street," all able-bodied Korean men have to serve in the military for 18+ months. One member of BTS, Jin, already enlisted last December, and it was announced last week that j-hope would be going next. This song is his last gift to BTS fans, ARMY, before he enlists. It's a huge deal to him and to us, who know him, that he got J.Cole on this song. That man really is j-hope's idol. (Don't worry - BTS will be coming back as a group once they return from the army. It's not big deal - all guys gotta go through it.)
Definitely check out j-hope's "Jack in the Box" album. It's got a grungy 90s hip-hop feel. His 2018 mixtape "Hope World" is more vibey.

Actually you are wrong in alot of it . Jhope did rap under ground too . He wrote his rap line debuting with another group . See this is the problem with some of you armies really know nothing about jhope other then what another one tells you armies . Jhope always wanted to rap and sing and dance As a solo artist . Why he struggled being in a KPOP band .

@@donnasoria90 J-Hope learned to rap after he joined Big Hit as a trainee. They signed him because of his dance skills. There is no where that I find anything saying that he was a rapper before joining BTS. Where do you get your information from? Even J-Hope said in AHL to JIN that he felt alone because everyone else were rappers and no one was a dancer when he joined. He threw himself into it, and started to freestyle with them, even though he didn't know what he was doing. After a while he would get better, and then he developed his own style.

RM (pre-BTS) was Runch Rander (and later also in the Hiphop crew Dae Nam Hyup), and Suga (pre-BTS) was Gloss with D-Town. (Before debut, the rappers were a Hiphop group called BPB, Bullet Proof Boys.) As well as rapping, singing, and dancing; various trainees were expected to practice song writing as well.

Jhope is one of those artists who is extremely popular but never forgets his roots and definitely never forgets where music stems from. Jcole is his role model and as his way of thanking jcole for being his inspiration he let jcole spend as long as he wants on the track. BTS, as group, also appreciates and is grateful for where hip hop and music in general stem from

Jhope used to do livestreams of him dancing and he called in “Hope on the Street,” which is where the title of this song comes from. And he would dance to music by J Cole and other hip hop artists he liked and respected. I love that this MV is basically just him doing that again. He’s just vibing out and dancing as Cole does his verse. And it was no mistake that he just did a very short verse with nothing flashy and gave Cole the rest. He didn’t even really show off his dance moves-he kept that pretty simple too.
I also noticed that he repeated the chorus an extra time to build suspense for Cole’s part in the MV. The version on spotify is a like that.

j-hope got a lot of his inspiration from J. Cole. this was an homage to him because he began as a street dancer, dancing to his music. Now he is the biggest group in the world. He’s a great rapper but he gave Cole the spotlight while he dances.
J-hope helped compose the song and created the whistle melody.
on the other side, this is a gift for the j-hope’s fans (BTS ARMY) because he’s getting ready to complete mandatory military service for the next 18 months seems like there’s also a solo version that may be coming out later with just j- hope. His solo stuff is great. You could check out Arson off his new Album Jack in the Box. Very different from this.
Anyway thank you for the reaction. Sorry for my long response but I think it helps to know the backstory on this one.

BTS are still together, they always had solo projects but this time they are all releasing albums because they have to do their mandatory military service, the oldest left in December and now with this song J-hope says goodbye and is the second member to go and come back as a group in 2025 when they are complete again.
J-hope's album is called "Jack in the box", I recommend "ARSON", I love it.
He admires J.Cole a lot and all the members are excellent artists and very nice people.

The motivation for J Cole to work with J Hope is a. there’s a long history between to two before they even met. B. J Hope is an amazing artists and rapper in his own right. And c. He is part of the biggest musical act(BTS) in the WORLD that for at least the last 3 years outsold EVERYBODY(including most of your favorite Western artists) and continues to break records worldwide. So it all boils down to J Cole has respect for all of that and is conscious of his own impact globally.

South Korean men have to do mandatory military, like the draft, before age 30, 18-24 months, jhope is soon leaving for his military duty, this is the last we’ll see him for awhile, the song is a goodbye gift for his fans, as always for us. All BTS members will be enlisting by end of the year, one went 2 months ago. They are at the top of their careers/game, global passionate fans who are devastated. I’m one of them. I never heard of jcole before, wow/ fantastic, different genres need to do this once awhile, it is eye opening. By the way, Google BTS stats on CZcams, they have 5 songs at least with over a billion views. Glad I now know who jcole is, man oh man, this collab was good for both of them.

J-Hope is one of the main dancers and dance leader of BTS. He was originally a street dancer, but his talent as a rapper blossomed as he became BTS.
As a rapper, J.Cole has been a hero to J-Hope. This song started with J-Hope's whistling accidentally, and J.Cole added his amazing verse to the melody and beat J-Hope made. I think it would be really meaningful for him to collaborate with J.Cole on a brief farewell song before joining the military. J-Hope showed great respect for him in this song.
As an ARMY(BTS' fanbase), I'm so happy with this collab.😭
BTS is consisting of three rappers and four vocalists. And all seven of them are excellent dancers.
BTS members are about to join the military. The oldest member, Jin, already enlisted about 80 days ago and is serving under the Korean law, and J-Hope is going to join the army soon. Other five BTS members will also serve in the military and will be reunited in 2025. So they are briefly stopping their eight-year group activities and focusing on their solo work.
They do a wide variety of music, but basically they are rooted in hip-hop.
All seven members are participating in making their songs by writing, composing, and producing them.
Now BTS is the biggest boy band in the world. But they started with a small company that almost went bankrupt, so they have been very looked down and hated by Korean broadcasting stations and other K-pop fandom. So they have struggled from the beginning to prove themselves.
I highly recommend Mic Drop's MV and the live performances. (It's one of their billion-view music video.)
The direction of Mic Drop's lyrics began with the idea of J-Hope.
And 'Mic Drop' at the end of this music video is a performance created by BTS leader RM inspired by Barack Obama's speech. :)
If you're interested in BTS' songs, I would like to recommend....
    Blood sweat & tears
    FIRE
    On kinetic manifesto film
    Black Swan
    Save me→I'm fine
    Daechwita(Agust D 대취타, Suga's solo)
These are pretty different from Butter or permission to dance or Dynamite.(Only these three songs are fully English. These three songs have been written in English since the Pandemic to give energy to people around the world.)
And, all of their music videos provide English subtitles. :)
Their lyrics are very deep and beautiful.

Or, I think it would be good to follow a story line.
DNA: Joy of fateful love → Fake Love: Realizing that love was a lie → IDOL, The Truth Untold, Epiphany, Answer Love Myself: To love other people completely, you should love yourself first.
These are included in Love Yourself Trilogy.
The lyrics of BTS' songs are based on their own experiences, and their albums are organic because they contain their growth narrative.
It will also be fun to listen to their albums in order and analyze them. :)
They make a wide variety of genres of music like Hip-hop, Ballad, R&B, pop, EDM, etc. I'm sure there're quite a few of their 300 songs that suit your taste. :)
And if you're interested in J-Hope's live energy, I recommend about an hour and 20 minutes of performance at the Lollapalooza Festival, where he participated as a headliner.
j-hope - Live at Lollapalooza 2022 (Full Performance)

For reference, the day he performed recorded the highest demand ever for one-day tickets among Lollapalooza performances. :)
I recommend his another collaboration, j-hope 'Chicken Noodle Soup (feat. Becky G)' MV, too. :)

To answer your question, what was the motivation behind J. Cole being on this song. J-hope has admired J. Cole for years. J-hope will be fulfilling his military duty soon. Which is required in Korea. So it's a beautiful thing he got to calab with his muse. J-hope showed respect by letting J. Cole have most of the song to rap while he danced. J-hope is a member of BTS, the biggest boy band in the world. They are much more than a Kpop group. I hope you are willing to get to know J-hope as an artist as well as BTS as a group. React to HIP-HOP PHILE and BORN SINGER BY BTS. In hip hop lover (2014), Jhope gives a shout-out to J.Cole. He literally named himself after him. The rappers name all their influences in hip hop phile and most of them are old-school rappers. BORN SINGER is the BTS adaption of BORN SINNER by J.Cole in 2013 when they debuted and J.Cole gave them permission to use it for the first track of their 9th-anniversary anthology album on June 13, 2022. While there is a lot of hip-hop influence in the K-pop industry, BTS is one of the only groups that actually credit the people who created and shaped hip-hop. They are actual students of the game.

Each individuals worth range between $16-$25+ million. JHope just got his dream collaboration before leaving for mandatory enlistment. I understand why you think jhope’s just another “culture vulture.” The kpop scene definitely has a bad history when it comes to appropriating black culture unfortunately, but jhope, and the rest of the bts members, are an exception!
You are right that jhope was heavily inspired* by jcole, but even the song speaks for itself. Jhope only had 8 bars while jcole had a whopping 32! This song is meant to be a present for jhopes fans before he leaves for the military for 18+ months, but the majority of the song was essentially given to jcole so jhope could pay homage to his humble beginnings: a street dancer who was inspired to become a musician after listening to “Friday Night Lights” by jcole.
As for the “if they gave into our community as much as they take” comment, BTS, the group jhope is from, gave $1 million to the BLM movement, and within 24 hours, their fans matched another million dollars, so in total $2 million dollars were donated to the cause because of BTS. And the only reason their fans knew about the donation in the first place was because Variety, a media company, went out of their way to uncover the details, BTS were not expected to comment on the donation.
In their song “Hip-Hop Lover” also known as “Hip-Hop Phile” the 3 rappers (including jhope) rapped about their love for hip-hop and gave credit to many hip-hop legends, including jcole. Jhopes remake of the song “Chicken Noodle Soup” was released for FREE after paying nearly $3 million to the original artist. BTS even has a song called “Born Singer” which was inspired by jcoles “Born Sinner.” It was released for free on SoundCloud a while back, but after they got permission from jcole himself, they included it in their anthology album “PROOF.”
Lastly, and I think every jcole fan can agree with this: jcole does not collaborate with just anyone. The fact that jcole decided to collaborate with jhope speaks VOLUMES. I understand your frustration, especially since I am also a person of color, but let’s please try our best to escape this “us versus them” narrative. I know we all need a LOT of time to heal our wounds from the atrocities we have faced, and I know the generational trauma is still very much alive, but the “us versus them” does not help heal those wounds. I know it’s easier said than done, but please. We are all human. We all enjoy music. We all feel passion. Let’s try our best to embrace each others cultures and not put each other into boxes. Hip-hop is for everyone!
      Much love 💜
