Will My Gas Stove Still Work When the Power Goes Out?

  • Older model stoves should work just fine during a power outage as long as you have an ignition source (lighter or match) to ignite the gas or propane after you've turned the knob. The ignitors will not work without power.
    Newer model ranges have a safety feature in them that will not allow the flow of gas or propane unless the cord for the display is plugged into a working outlet.
    To overcome this safety feature, you just need a 12v battery (car battery, lawn mower battery, boat battery, etc.) and an inverter like the one listed below:
    amzn.to/3pqwyTH
    Hook everything up correctly, and plug your range into the inverter. This will now allow the flow of gas and you'll be able to use the ignitor too.
    THIS IS FOR THE RANGE ONLY! NOT FOR THE OVEN!
    The oven ignitor is a power hog and will likely trip your inverter and will not work. It will also drain whatever battery you're using at a fast rate.

    That's why I like the older stoves in the 70s lighting took my parents' gas oven and it had to be repaired. I have a gas stove from the 50s, and the oven works even when the power is out.

    I have used the top of the stove to keep the house warm during the power outage. But it's good to to let the window up a little bit. Also putting big pot of water on the stove eye and turn it down low. Use a couple of pots but if you like. The Steam from the water helped out a lot to keep the certain parts of the House Warm. I don't understand the difference when you cook you're still using the stove. But I wouldas using this method All night. This is good for homes apartments that has open kitchen dining room and living room. But remember keep the window open at least a little bit. Just a suggestion. I'm not a professional.

    Thank you so much for answering my question. The stove must have electric in order for it to light because the gas will not flow. THANK YOU

    I keep a candle and can of Crisco, as well as a coleman one burner backup if gas goes out, but my stovetop gas stove works unpowered. Use those to keep area where pipes can freeze, go in a closed off bedroom and stay bundled up to weather the storm out....had to do twice and CO monitor never went off.

      In closed off bedroom keep bottom of window cracked, CO is heavy, vent closer to the floor as possible.

    How about if the gas goes out since the stove is half Electric will the stove and oven still work if there's no propane?

    If I buy a new basic stove without a clock or anything digital on it, will it work by lighting with a match/lighter if power goes out? Debating on buying a simpler range and ditching this Samsung but want to be sure it’s not too g to have the same safety features lol our range doesn’t make a “click” when you turn the knob when power goes out I’d rather have one that is easier to light

      None of them will "click" or try to ignite without power. However, the older models would still allow gas to flow if you turned the knob and you could light it with a match. The newer ones that I've seen won't allow the flow of gas without electricity. They might very well still make new ones that allow gas to flow without electricity but I just haven't personally seen them. If you've got a newer gas stove, all you'll need is a 12v battery (car battery, lawn mower battery, etc.) and a small inverter to overcome the safety feature. You could, of course, use a generator as well.

    Ok, but here is what i wanna do... can i leave my gas oven on low, and when the power goes out, will it just keep burning?, and can i turn it up cause the furnace will be out?

    Would my small solar/electric generator work? It's not powerful enough for a mini-fridge, but how much does a gas stove need? Is it less than a electric stove?

    • @KAMIZOM
      @KAMIZOM Před 2 lety +1

      Yes a gas stove would require less energy. I’m 8 months late though so you probably figured it out already lol

      @@KAMIZOM Thanks! I would just have to figure out how to hook it up for an electric start.

    Do you have to keep it plugged in once you get your burner lit? How long will the battery last before you run out of charge?

    • @HomeBatteryBank
      @HomeBatteryBank  Před 2 lety +2

      Since mine is older, no. The newer ones with the built-in safety features will probably require it to stay powered in order to keep the gas flowing. As far as the battery is concerned, it depends on the size of your battery, but the requirements of the stove are tiny, so unless you're leaving it hooked up for days or weeks on end, then you'll be just fine.

    Bummer, I really hoped there was a permanent way to get the new ovens to lite without electricity. They irritate me with all their dumb safety features 😤

    • @tier3rd375
      @tier3rd375 Před rokem

      It's more than just a safety feature on why you can't light the oven during a power outage. Ovens also need to control their temperature, which is accomplished by opening the gas valve when it needs to heat up and closing it once it reaches its target temperature.

    • @HomeBatteryBank
      @HomeBatteryBank  Před rokem +1

      During a normal power outage, yes. Obviously, if it was an earthquake the caused the power outage and the gas lines were compromised, then this would be an exception. I've never had an issue with my natural gas not working during a power outage, even an extended one.
