  • In this video I give my opinion on whether the Rivian R2 charge port location is on the wrong side for the Tesla Supercharger network, and why It shouldn't matter.

    I agree, all ports should be on the right side for future curb side charging.

    The charge port belongs on the front passenger side to facilitate easy curbside and Tesla charger usage as well as easy charger access while towing and/or using a rear bike rack. The front passenger side is the only logical place for the charge port.

    I believe the port isn't incorrectly positioned. Just because one car manufacturer opts for a particular side doesn't make it the standard. Placing it on the passenger side enhances safety. With numerous cities installing level 2 chargers on sidewalks, having the ports on the passenger side is a prudent decision. It mitigates the risk of a passing vehicle accidentally dislodging the cable.

    Its not going to be a popular take, but Tesla's location is very short-sighted. Its basically set to back into spaces only and for driver convenience on Tesla models with Tesla Superchargers. It does not take into account things like pull through chargers for towing vehicles, or the potential street side chargers for places where parallel parking is necessary.
    I know no one wants to hear it, but in my opinion anyone not puttinf a charger on the passenger side is doing it wrong for adoption of potential future infrastructure.

    I have a VW ID.4 and the port is on the back passenger side. Just like the R2 will have. It's just fine for me. And much better to charge at home. I pull in head first and the plug is right by my charger. Almost don't have to unwind more than 1 to plug in. It also is fine for my wife's Leaf in the front. She can pull up to the door and have enough to plug it in under the door. Only have a 1 car garage here.

    If the R2 is able to tow, then they should keep the charge port in the same location as the R1 at the very least. Steve-O might be making a big mistake.

    I think if Tesla is serious about opening up the network, the onus should be on them. They should only be doing V4's with the long cables going forward. Sidenote: Is there really any doubt in anybody's mind that if one of these brands pisses Elon off they mysteriously might have some trouble charging in the future 😂. We need more than Tesla chargers for long-distance travel to rely on, so put the port wherever is best for the brand.

    The new version 4 Tesla superchargers has a much longer cable in it. I think it's 6 feet longer if I recall.

    I would like to lease an R3. I also have never owned or leased a RIVIAN. Even though this vehicle is in the infant stage however, any idea as to $ on this car and it’s launch date such as late 2025 ? Your thought please !

    Tesla is a great company, but they are living off first mover advantage hype. I give tesla another 2 to 3 years as most dominant and rivian, and others will even out the market share as they progress

    • @thedukeofmanville

      I agree. Tesla will just be another player in the EV space and I believe the same will be true for the supercharger network.

    You are missing the point. It’s the Charger location. Your Rivian will take up two charging spots because of the charging port location.

    • @thedukeofmanville
      @thedukeofmanville  Před 2 měsíci

      Well Tesla should not have opened their supercharger network until they solved that problem, but they did anyway. It's a public charging network now. The V4 superchargers don't have this problem only the V3s.

    Charging port placement that saves Rivian money is the right choice given they lose 10s of thousands on every vehicle sold. Plus, charging port location is not a major consideration metric when one buys an EV. THE charging standard in USA is Tesla. Think not, just visit the FORD, GM and Rivian forums all abuzz about getting the NACS adapter. Tesla is already placing longer cables on V4 SCs but as for Tesla adapting to other EV manufacturers due to declining market share...dream on. No evidence of that now or in the foreseeable future. Ford, GM and Rivian COMBINED sold roughly 10% of US Tesla EVs in 2023.

      @thedukeofmanville  Před 2 měsíci

      I believe you just supported my claim about Tesla's market share because the people that are most excited in those forums are previous Tesla owners that have switched to other EV brands. Plus non Tesla charges are being installed at more than triple the rate as Tesla. People outside of the EV bubble are clueless about different charging standards which is near 90% of the population. In my opinion GM has the best charging stations by far, and I find it a bit curious they haven't started passing out Tesla adapters since they were second in line ahead of Rivian.

    Back left or right as is the case for most gas tanks. Keep it simple, keep it the same. As for Tesla opening up their network to non-Teslas that's a plus for non-Tesla makers and moving the EV movement forward. Everyone knows where the Tesla charging port is located. If you want to design and build your vehicle such that the charge port is not where it is on the Tesla, then in my opinion that's on the non-Telsa EV makers, and they should front the cost by issuing their customers an extension cable of sorts. There choice and their bottom-line is not a reason for Tesla to have to retrofit their chargers. Now if the non-Tesla makers want to subsidize those changes by all means I am sure Tesla will make that happen. Tesla has already gone beyond anything Ford, GM, or Rvian would due for another brand, as is proven by all these makers putting the port where they dang well please. Well, don't use the Tesla charging network is all I can say. Not Tesla's loss, nor mine.

      simply put tesla opened up the chargers so they should add the the longer cable they make and install the chargers

      Tesla needs the revenue. I predicted this in a video I made almost a year ago, and others are now just catching on.
