So glad that we share the opinions on Heaven and Yellowface. I think with Heaven, a lot gets lost in translation unfortunately. I‘ve read multiple books that were translated from Japanese (to English and German) and they all felt kinda flat. As if there were no emotions in the writing. I‘m sure it‘s not that case for the original text. Bummer 🥹
About Yellowface: I‘m also hesitant to pick up any other books from R.F. Kuang now because I didn‘t particularly liked Yellowface (it was my first read of her) Didn‘t understand the hype. I also watched some analysis videos (both pro and contra) and kinda got it, but still found it to be petty and mocking af. As a white woman, I maybe shouldn‘t judge that but meh.

I've read yellowface and Babel and personally, I liked Babel more.

I love Khaled Hosseini and like your recommendations. I haven’t red Yellowface but Babel I loved and it is one of my favorite books. I would love you to read Babel and share your thoughts on it. 🙏

“I love me an absurd ending I didn’t see coming at all” 😂 I’m gonna start reading books with this mindset now lol

'Yellowface' has just been released here in Germany & my timeline was turned yellow. I want to read it simply because of the 'writer storyline' even though the reviews on it are not so great.

I love Babel, but I have no interest in reading Yellowface because the plot just doesn´t catch my attention. The plot for her newest book sounds great tho so I will continue to read from her. I wish I could read poppy war but the thought of getting into a fantasy series sounds horrible to me LOL Maybe if one day I'm really bored i'd give it a chance.

acting like reading a fantasy series is beneath you, like okay?? 😭

@@_dayliqht I'm crying when did i say that LOL I just don't like reading fantasy and can only get through it with an audiobook or if i have a lot of free time. You're so weird for having a victim complex and projecting it into my random ass comment 😭 Babel is technically fantasy too and i literally said i love it.

I have been the same! For some odd reasons I cannot just sit and read a book, I can only read physical books if I'm also listening to the audio version. Also, I have been eyeing The Alice Network for a while, so now I'm gonna add it to my TBR, as well as Nothing to See Here.

I had the identical reaction to Yellowface. First off, the main character was seriously one of the most obnoxious people I’ve ever met in a book. I got to the middle and couldn’t turn another page, but kind of wanted to see what the outcome was so I skipped to the end. Ugh! I think you were generous with your rating.

You need to try Babel , it wasn't perfect as it sometimes read like an academic book but try the first few chapters , it is very interesting. A common problem i have with R.F Kuang , great premises , lovely plot but the writing comes off dry lots of the times , it didn't bother me in her fantasy trilogy because the characters and the plot were amazing , but in babel and yellowface , you start to get bothered by it , babel had a more interesting plot and it covered the rather dry writing

@@rananajjar While I understand why people love Babel, I think you're right to be hesitant - if you didn't vibe with her writing style in Yellowface, you probably won't like Babel. She over-explains everything and the characters are flat so for me, the interesting concepts in it didn't make up for that.

I prefered Babel, and found it better, in my opinion, than the whole Poppy War Trilogy... and I really didn't care for Yellowface. I think I just prefer a bit of magic in my books by her.😉

I haven't read Yellowface, but I DNF Babel despite agreeing with its message. I felt the book lacked beautiful prose, and was incredibly preachy (at least the parts I read before deciding not to continue).
Mieko Kawakami on the other hand is one of my favourite living authors. I love her writing. That said, "Heaven" is my least favourite of her books. Try "Ms Ice Sandwich" by her. It is really short (less than 100 pages), but not as heavy, and has a lot of cute moments. But, her best work is "Breasts & Eggs" in my opinion.
Btw..I find that most your books fall under the 3 stars category is how things should be (most my ratings in books, movies, series is 3.5) in my opinion. Most of what we consume is somewhere in the middle.
