  • Cody was drawn for a late season damage hunt on private land. Thankfully, the cold weather and early snow had the elk close to the roads and unwilling to move!
    We saw lots of elk and were lucky enough to fill the tag! Bare with us as the video was shot exclusively with a cell phone including holding the phone up to binoculars for some close up shots. (Sorry for the shaking in advance)
    The rifle used was a Christiansen Arms 6.5 PRC and the distance for the shot was approximately 450 yards.

    I hate seeing a slow death. Yes, in my 55 years of hunting, I've had a few, however. it always makes me sick to my stomach and I give extra words to honor the life of that animal for giving me meat for my family.

    I think a trip or two to the range is In order before next season.Also you might watch a few videos on Randy Newberg s channel ,he advises to keep shooting until they stop moving .Too many times a so-called dead elk gets up and runs off never to be found.

    Congratulations! Message to the shooter though, send a couple boxes down range before heading to the hills!

    A range finder is a very useful tool and I suspect you didn't have one because I didn't hear anybody calling out a yardage. I also suspect that you haven't created a drop chart because I don't here any reference to drops. Estimating distance with the naked eye is very difficult. Good luck on your future hunts.

    Congrats on your success! My wife had a cow tag here last season for the very northern panhandle of Idaho. She went out with me but didn't bring a rifle since she was just along for the hike and we were looking for my buck tag to be filled. Long story short we got into elk so my wife borrowed my rifle (which she had never shot) and took a bedded cow with one shot at 438 yards! Smoked it through the heart with my 7 mag! Took us about 30 minutes to get to where we found it but I kept telling her "You just killed an elk" so the walk seemed like 60 seconds! Memories for a lifetime and a freezer full of deliciousness :)

    What about the rest of the meat ???? Didn't look like you got it all for a late hunt thats a meat hunt 🤔 and definitely need more range time with that gun... if you need help I will teach

    What caliber and what bullet were you using? Beautiful area. Little bit more range is always required by all. When you think you are a good shot keep practicing. Thanks for the video.

      It was a 6.5 PRC and the 143 grain Hornady ELD-X was the bullet used. Thanks for watching!

      @@UnconventionalUndertakings So a serious question for you. Do you think at that range the rifle was under powered or the wrong weight of bullet or was it shot placement? I am assuming they all hit high?(top of lung below spine)

    • @UnconventionalUndertakings
      @UnconventionalUndertakings  Před rokem

      2 of the 3 were as described (high lung) and the third was center body. None passed through and it seemed like only one got both lungs. First elk I’ve seen taken with a 6.5 so it’s hard to say definitively that it’s under powered. I believe the body angle had something to do with the lack of pass throughs though.
      One thing is for sure though she wasn’t going anywhere. Even when she got up again her legs were completely stiff and she didn’t react to the bullet impacts. When compared to being slowly eaten alive by wolves or bears it’s hard to complain about “feeling off” for a couple minutes before slipping away.

      @blaynemacpherson8519 Před rokem

      @@UnconventionalUndertakings I’m not thinking of well she was injured and she was feeling pain. Which of course we try to avoid but this is a learning experience of was it the proper bullet or caliber?? Because she never reacted to the shots. Did you find the bullets?
      I’m thinking that it was not a good combination bullet caliber distance on this hunt. If this hunt happened again what would a person change to make it better?

    For the 6.5PRC I'd say the Barnes 127 grain LRX would be worth a try. You can get them to impressive speeds and because they are all copper they are likely nearly as long as a 140 grain bullet with a lead core. Try H1000, H4831SC, IMR4831 maybe even Superformance powders. Given your exact situation, I'd prefer the all copper for penetration. Doesn't matter that it's a few grains lighter. As you know, test it at multiple ranges, know your elevation dope and go hunting. I've seen a 110 TSX kill a pronghorn from a 270 Win at 900 yards. Opened up just fine. No one wants to witness a prolonged death but I'll say this, kudos to you for sharing a video that is reality for what many hunters experience

      BS, just ask Ron Spomer, 6.5 PRC has similar performance (powder quantity) to a 270 Win but flatter shooting of higher BC bullets.
