- Living without money: Jon Henley spends the day in Bath with Mark Boyle, the moneyless man, who last year decided to stop spending money ... on anything ... at all ... ever. And guess what? He's doing rather well for himself.

People that live this way are so patient, generous, calm and clear with their thinking. Almost as if we were meant to live this way.
We might
We were ment to... we live this modern way for only a few decades now
In the U.S., from what I've heard, it's really hard to dive into dumpsters at grocery stores and take the food out. Cops come and tell people to leave because the "garbage" is owned by the stores. Owners of the stores get mad, then dumpsters get locked up tight so no one can get into them. It's so infuriating that perfectly edible food is just thrown away (and locked up!) while hundreds of thousands of people are starving and can't afford to buy food! Those stores care about making a profit, not helping the needy. They make no money if starving people go into their dumpsters and take out the food that they threw away. It's a shame...
sad but true
i do it it is ridiculous how much food is thrown away i can fill the entire back of a pickup full in one or two dumpsters
Skye ID It's true only for some businesses, I live in Tulsa oklahoma and I know lots of businesses that give away the extra food to who ever will come pick it up, like donut shops etc, many will leave the extras in closed boxes and set it on top of the dumpster so anyone can grab it and it doesn't get contaminated by the actual trash, and when I lived back in Missouri, Panera bread used to give away all the bread that wasn't sold each day.
Not sure what the precise numbers are I've read that 40% of produce goes to waste
+ru1111111 sell?? Who sold it to them? The dumpster?
I camped for over a year on my own (at the time) 38 acres. I can tell you with some authority that when you're providing your own heat, food, water, shelter, etc., there's very little free time. What there is you spend resting. After over a year, the County finally found me & informed me that the longest one can camp legally---EVEN ON YOUR OWN ISOLATED LAND---is two weeks. That's true pretty much throughout all of the USA. I fought it, but lost.
Definitely recommend his books "The Way Home" and "Moneyless Man". Will make you reconsider what you need to be happy!
Yes we should be grateful for what we have in life
@@ALI_FA17 I definitely need money to be happy.
I am going to live like this as soon as I can this guy is my inspiration

i'm seriously trying so hard to get even just a teeny bit of a plot to get my caravan on. Been trying for 2 years getting no where guys ! Got to keep going though
Update please.
@@Fintan33 Goooo! Cheering for you! 😀🥰
My only issue with this life style is that it relies on the sell by date food management policy of the big supermarkets. As a result its not an existence that's broken links with the excesses of society, it's a life style that depends upon those excesses.
Nothing in this life is perfect.
@@Alex-uo4qq I loved Your reply.
Mark in his TedTalk did say we humans are dependent either on the earth and other humans.
He does actually address this really thoroughly in his Moneyless Manifesto book. As of 2019 he is truly off grid, he is totally sincere in his mission.
I think this stage of his journey is important in learning how wasteful the current system is, that a person can live off it for over a year without spending any money. That's a radical observation.
How many people are 1 step away from living like this anyway? I know I am.
Me, me, me--- :>(
That 1 step away..

Mark Boyle you are divine, brother!
"Be the change you want to see in the world." Awesome quote!
Very true too
Read his book last year- he started off buying his laptop and solar panel, then he got the caravan free on freecycle (if I remember right), then he arranged to work a few days a week on the farm he's located on in exchange for the small plot for the caravan. Then he started proper moneyless living. Love his philosophy. I'd do it tomorrow but my wife likes her central heated house too much!

I've been living without money all morning it was very refreshing. I'm off to the pub now
I applaud this gent. However, since everything is Energy it doesn't matter if one spends their energy dumpster diving for food or working their 9 to 5 job. What's important is to remain elevated in spirit in whatever you choose to do. "Be the change that you want to see in the world"...allowing your light to shine in front of the world! Love~
+Glenda relli so as long as your spirit is elevated whilst you work as (hmm thinking of a job similar to being a nazi...) how about you are an arms dealer and are knowingly selling to your weapons to those that will happily kill young and old alike as long as your spirit is elevated.... yeah i see a flaw in that fairy tale.
i think you get my point.
+Turk aka AuralVirus I agree, there are some jobs that I could not spend my Energy on...Truth! One must live their own truth. As for myself, I am vegan...it is my choice to do no harm to any being [if I can at all help it] yet I can only live MY TRUTH. My truth may not be someone else truth...I do not live a fairly tale, only My Truth.
Glenda relli you really would be wise to change the word "truth" to "perception" because that is what it is.
Using the word "Truth" is making a claim of it being more than it actually is, a righteous, pedestal like state (verging on sounding pompous, pretentious even) that is arguable and ultimately disprovable through debate where as perception is subjective, personal to you and undeniable.
+Turk aka AuralVirus ....now wait a minute, I have every right to speak and live "MY TRUTH"....my truth is my truth...I Am not projecting it onto anyone. I have a right to live my authentic Self! We are as the ocean...one ocean with many expressions...[waves, rain, snow, humidity, etc....] I also keep in mind that I must be flexible, with life comes expansion, so as life [experiences] evolves I am OPEN to change, as water I flow... As for today, I will live my authentic life.... I subscribe to non-judgement, no one likes to be told what-to-do...live and let live. I live by INTEGRITY, careful not sow something I do not want to reap later [that will take care of those that bomb children & the innocent]. Karma...nuff said. Peace & Love.
Glenda relli yeah I kind of agree with you but the way you word it sounds so fake and pretentious. maybe lay off the weed?
I worked at Somerfield for a couple of years, we used to chuck bags and bags of food away. Staff members weren't even allowed to take it. We had about 6 cooked chickens one night, piping hot, cooked a few hours before and we were told to throw them out. I said, ''I'll have one if they're going to get chucked out'' the manager refused but said I could buy it. If not, throw it in the bin. Criminal.
The amount of waste in the world is disgusting indeed.
***** I worked at a Somerfield in Wolverhampton haha.
Shakeys near my home use to throw out good food until I wrote a letter to their corporate office. Now they place the food in to go boxes so that the homeless can come and take it. :)

Eventually a lot of people are going to end up having to live like this due to being made homeless because they can't afford their rent and food.
This guy lives like the hunter-gatherers, the state in which humans lived and evolved for hundreds and thousands of years. Only 10.000 years ago with the introduction of agriculture, was when we began our separation from our natural state. We are not genetically prone to live in this Money ruled society. We are prone to be living in a harmonious world where sensation and feelings comes first, not in this hostile world where anxiety driven thought rues our precious time on this earth.
this guy is awesome, but he needs subtitles, I can't hardly understand him!!
Man, this is a nice video to watch. I thought I was the only one realizing how much food we waste.
a very well done and informative video. As employees at a grocery store we are forced by the company to throw away tens of thousands of dollars a year worth of produce, and meat products. In just one store we throw away that much now imagine the whole world. Amazing story and reported properly.
Good work Mark well done support everything you do !

Like it, I LOVE it!
@SpiritualShow Thank you for seeing my point. While others have pointed out that food can be obtained from other sources or bartered for, I can't help but wonder how those who have nothing to barter with, or the usable skills to trade labor for food, would do if there were no waste products for them to latch onto. It's beyond sad that people live this way. In Marks case it's a choice, an experiment. For countless others, it's their only option. It maybe wasted food but it's their survival.
I want this...love it...love hime!
I heart mark boyle!
Great info.. that ladder can't be safe😳
Ever get the feeling CZcams is trying to teach you how to adjust to post-apocalyptic life?
{I've been out here without money in the USA for about 12 years.}
Life is so much easier...
I actually can enjoy my life,
instead of living it in the pursuit of things
and the money to buy them with.
The thing that keeps me from wanting unnecessary things?
Knowing that someone is going to have to give
their life and joy to make them.
Sure, best way is Facebook,
facebook.com/AllOne1111
I live in a camper, mostly I've been living on people's land, trading labor and other things instead of rent.
for over 20 years, I've only had clothing that is given to me, by friends throwing things away, or "Free piles". I only eat what I am offered, or need to eat, "Opportun-avore".
It's only been about 5 years almost completely moneyless, when I gave up dragging my camper around, and driving.
I just really stop and think about whether or not I actually need something, or if I just want it. You are correct, most things people think they need, they really only want. {Like electricity, running water, haircuts, phones, candy... haha
I heat with wood, which is free if you are willing to work.
The thing is, living free takes a lot of time, either making clothes or repairing used, chop wood, carry water, finding things, and labor in trade.
For a few years I traveled with just my tent, while my camper has set put in Vermont... Sometimes, I live with friends, trading work for rent, food, clothes, rides.
I've actually managed to travel quite a bit, even made it to Israel last winter! People send plane tickets when they want to see my badly enough.
Usually, I get the last of someone's shampoo, or the kind they bought and didn't like, the bottom of their toothpaste, table scraps.
Internet is free, and internet phone service does me just fine.
Right now I am so fortunate, I am living on my sister's land, trading with her for what little electric I use {computer and a light bulb} the internet wi-fi reaches where I am parked on her land... I eat the leftovers they used to give to the dogs... forage, now, everyone's gardens are coming in, being a vegetarian, I'm living it up.
I make most of the things I need, I used to be a construction contractor, so I am pretty handy. Barter is better I've found.
I do get money on occasion, either an odd job, or I'm pretty good at finding it on the ground too! I think, this last year, I made about $500.
It's key to stay healthy, to barter work, and to keep from needing medical expenses.
When the fruits and berries are in season, I get right on it! LOL It's amazing how much food is growing out in the yard or woods.
I look forward to talking more! I'd love to hear your stories!
I hate you...I work JK
Lia Mari Wow!!! I absolutely love the idea of living like that!...I want to buy a patch of land and set up my own commune...I am going to do it...I don't want to sit there wishing for it all my life, its something i need to do...I don't belong in this society...I need to find out about more like minded people, not people who are gunna tell me 'live in the real world, you need to get a job, that i 'CANT live without monney' and just negative people...Also, can i add you on facebook please? :)

Funny thing, my situation has changed,

Hi there, I've nearly finished reading the Moneyless Manifesto and love love love it. My girlfriend just brought up an important point I missed and was wonder if anyone could clarify. If he is living the moneyless lifestyle where do the profits from his book sales go? Is it gifting them or ?
The last I heard he was going to put them towards purchasing land to potentially start an eco-community where they can skill share and live off the land. He mentioned that purchasing the land wasn't the most ideal option but the only way to be left alone and be free to live how they choose.
Very good idea!
I worked at asda, & a trolley of meat fell over coming off a lorry, they binned the whole lot there & then, i couldn't believe it, read your book too mark, well done!
A haaa, that's where all my bloody lighters have been going!🤣
I live in the North and i've had no money for 25 years lol..
I find it apalling we can no longer live off the land without money.
This is very interesting.
straight up hero
This man figured it out 👍
Interesting how he's managed. I don't know that I could do it, but more power to him. I do have a question though: if the stores didn't dump food in the skips for him and others to take, wouldn't he have a hard time getting by, especially in winter? There are homeless people out there that need that food - while society is messed up and he objects to the waste, it's the waste that is helping him and others survive. One coin, two sides.
Yeah they'd definitely have to grow some food, don't know how they'd manage to in winter. Perhaps sealed jars of food conserves from food cooked in summer, with flour and rice unaffected by seasons.
I thought the other guy wrote the book? He said he did. .....Man who gave up money god is so with you!!!!! I found your video and just love it...if ever your in high point nc please come to myborrowed home and have a meal with me and then we can talk and paint!!!1

Love to see an update if Mark is still living this way. Hope so as i am heading this way to give uo possessions.
he is not a "bum" in my eyes, he is actually a bum. The only difference between him and all the other bums I see, is that he is not a beggar. If noone threw anything away anymore, he would starve, have no clothes, get no books etc. You have too look at what is sustainable for everyone. If you want to live a "money-less" life, you have to be a farmer in order to survive. Then you will live till you get very sick, and you will die unless you get free medical treatment/medicine.
i hate money,it makes me sad.money is killing life.we are destroying everything only for the sake of money
With regards to the waste, Sadly my local shop does the same. They bin everything cooked that day that could essentially last a few more. I'm not suggesting they keep selling them item's but they could give it away. 👍 We are headed towards a cashless society anyway. Mark is ahead of the game but the area he lives could be tidied up and made to look more comfortable.
I'd personally use the sun newspaper 🗞 to wipe my bum with. ✌️
its crazy how much unused still in package food they throw away.. that guy is lucky!
+katie dugan that guy is not lucky. practically every supermarket you come across has tons of totally fine food laying in the trash bins. google "containering". you'll wonder ...
was the lighter free? i assume it was
but lighters are like 50 cents here lol
But if people didn't throw away good like that then people like you would have a hard time eating. Hmmmmm???
+Deona Eddy
No Deona, the point of many involved in the movement is that rather than tossing it in the bin, we should be sending it on to pantries, soup kitchens, etc. or selling it at discounts, just as we should be with "ugly" food. The expiration date system is extremely faulty and leading to excessive food waste. There was a good TED talk on it by Tristam Stuart that really clarified the issue of food waste in most developed countries. One of my students sent it to me when she was doing a speech on minimalism, and it was somewhat shocking.
Interesting video. Getting "off the grid" and away from the big corporation dominance is a dream of many. Mark does a good job doing that, but one of the big things I didn't hear answered is the property he squats on. While it is fine since he is reasonably well setup with a little stream nearby and lots of land to do farming on... I am wondering why he is not getting chased away constantly by the land owner. Also, I wonder what he trades for his internet connection and cellphone.
There are food banks and soup kitchens in big cities and you can live in a tent outside, but in the countryside this is not the case
I know he's out to prove a good point, but he lives on a nice big piece of land, he has wifi (free dongle?) and I'm quite sure if he gets appendicitis he will be down at his (tax payer funded) local A+E pretty quick.
So it's more about living on someone elses money than being 'a no money man'
Hermits have been doing it for years, nothing extroirdinary.
In Australia so much wastage because of the red tape having to throw food away. I work in a supermarket and the amount that is thrown is crazy.
his ted talk is good
There are several problems, one is Mark your relying on the flocked up worlds leftovers. No world no leftovers, no caravan. Still a fair cop on the try & keep going Mark. Remember to plant your 22 heritage trees where they shouldn't move. Wait I planted 700 so you can count 22 as your carbon sink :). Tossdart
how does he get internet connection? I'm not complaining, I'm just curious, this is a really cool project he's undertook btw, thanks for uploading.
THIS IS CRAZY
it's my goal to start producing 25% of my own food from a garden along with chickens and bees. I would also like goats and pigs, but I don't think I could slaughter them myself unless I was a week from dying of starvation. But the point is if I was even making a quarter of my food at home I would feel better and more secure.
He will not have problem to refuse to be chipped
Mark looks cool for being so alternative and idealistic, however we all get old, and most of us want to live longer, so what is Mark going to do when he needs medicines and/or an operation?
In my opinion, Mark's lifestyle is either unrealistic or ok for those who like to live like in the stone age and do not mind dying earlier because of lack of healthcare assistance and all the conveniences that technology and science gave us despite some failures.
A GREAT man
Rob greenfield brought me here ✌️
nice
Everything the man uses was from industrialized money dependent societies... I'm a big fan of the guy but can't overlook the hypocrisy. Before looking for a role model to follow, any free thinking person should ask the hard questions without worrying about offending him. If he's secure and confident. Then no question can offend him and in fact he'd welcome the challenge.
+dojistar whats your point? he's living without money, nothing more nothing less, where and more to the point how is it even possible to be hypocritical to that ethos? he's not saying he rejects modern living just that there's waste and he can live off that waste proving the excess & frivolity of modern society .
I liked the idea 'til he put out something on Facebook saying he and Fergus and others are holding a workshop about moneyless living - but the workshop costs like £800!
I've tried getting an answer from these guys about how they can possibly do this. Why aren't they just holding it in a free outdoor space? No responses, apart from some inane blathering to get around the fundamental question.
Just makes it seem like they don't actually believe in the idea.
Disenchanted with Mark Boyle. Shame.
6:00 chill with the hippy mace ...
He doesn't live like a hunter/gatherer like some of the comments say.... this lifestyle is only possible BECAUSE so many people and companies throw things away that are still well edible and usable. If, let's say, 20% of the population lived like him and the rest would be more eco conscious and would throw away less, survival of those 20% would be much harder.
Wrong. If more people lived like him and less people were in the factories then it would be EASIER to survive without money. There would be more land to hunt on, more fish to fish. There wouldn't be as many restrictions. As is now, he probably has to scavenge for food because he is legally unable to hunt.
Evan Brown
Only if more people lived vegan as well. Land on the earth is limited as such - especially fertile land. We could only live of it if almost no meat was consumed anymore. Otherwise it wouldn't be enough and instead of stepping on anothers toes hunting wild pigs, we would probably very quickly start keeping and feeding house pigs again. And, Evan, only very few people actually work "in factories" nowadays in Europe. Those who work in an area that does not have an immediate outcome/product that can be changed towards other goods or food (such as teachers, doctors, translators) need to eat and live somewhere as well. Hence, after the abolishon of money, we would probably very quickly come up with some exchange currency/tool for such services again. And .... whhhush.... money would be back in the game, just with a different name.
SalomeSchmidt By factories I was mostly generalizing and meant any modern day job, but I see what you are saying. Our population is too high for us all to live as simply as I wish that we could live. But I think we are at a point in our self-awareness as humans to do something different, especially with our technology. I think that we could feed the world and satisfy every other needs that we have as humans without money or inequality. We have the technology to do so, just not the right motive. Borders, money, politics, etc are restricting us from thriving and helping the earth thrive too.
SalomeSchmidt we can feed people using Permaculture methods. We can't using traditional farming methods. Chickens and rabbits eat grass. Their waste is important fertilizers for the soil web. We can't raise cows on corn. They don't even do well on corn. They need grasss. Read up on Permaculture. Lawns need to go, they should be growing food.
Chickens don't eat grass! They do eat snails though, which is great when you grow your own vegetables.
@MrUAV100 'when the system fails and it will soon'. can you define the 'system' exactly? and when do you think it will fail, seeing as money has existed for ages.
If everyone did this, there will be no soldiers, no country, no tax, no corruption as well.
The supermarkets give us the food now. I am one of the volunteer drivers that does the collections. I was a skip diver for 60 years.
I like his bold example and I think its an extreme effort in response to an extremely dysfunctional economic system.
Into the wild part 2
@northernhoard Sounds like a big project. If you happen to know, I'm curious....by setting up a community, what exactly will that be? Is he going to buy a tract of land for people to set up their trailers/huts/whatever on and allow them to live there while they go about their daily survival....When I think of setting up a community, that's where my mind goes...is he talking a physical setting up or an information and help group type of thing?
He's wearing a brand new pull-over
Neat.
where does he get the internet from ? the food etc

just shows what one person can do
where did the wood come from? and that cozy sweater? clean shaven for a bum.the trailer had to come from some $$$$
fishy fishy making it stinky
who the F would want to live like this guy?
A comment from someone I won't name: "Now that he's on the news his book will sell like crazy. How long will he be living in the trailer and eating thrown out food then?" A bit snotty but it's a touch truthful: he won't be the "No Money Man" then. My guess is that he'll throw the bulk of the money into charity or set up a program to feed the homeless. He seems the type to do that.
I have never deliberately gone 'dumpster diving' for food, not that I am against it, however I will gather any usable items that have been discarded for landfill which means saving resources and spend less money and extra items I find but do not need for myself I will sell and use the cash for things I do need. More people should do this, we are so wasteful in this consumerist world. Every bit helps even if you don't live 'off grid' and totally free of money.
AND NOW MARK BOYLE WINS MONEY IN CZcams CHANNEL!!!
how does he get free internet? it says in another documentation he did not pay a cent for 15 months. Paying the internet plan upfront for 2 years should not count! ;D
i never seen any vid that said he was broke before he started...the exsperiment...and that is a big plus
