I'm a huge baseball fan ( die hard Mets fan) and played my whole life since about 5 years old up until 12th grade varsity, plus every summer, senior league etc...I was set looking at colleges and had a few colleges scouting me ( no division one or anything like that)
I woke up one morning in my senior league in the middle of the season and could hardly walk on my right hip. I went for an mri and found out I have juvenile Arthritis. My whole " career" ended at that point and years later now I have really bad arthritis throughout my body. My dad has it, so I inherited through him, unfortunately.
I fell into a deep depression after all that and went into a tailspin for several years until I got back on track, but till this day it hasn't been easy..I know you'll probably never see this, but I felt compelled to let it out. Thanks for your awesome channel for those of us who never had the chance to experience all you did. We can live vicariously through you, and that's pretty cool.

I really respect your mentality and the way you carried yourself throughout your entire career. Mostly because I've heard stories of guys that fall into those traps and mess around with those groupies and consequently get released. I'm not sure if that's exactly how it happens, however, you are exceptional.

Just from Matt's level of uncomfortable, It is easy to tell, he's not BS-ing when he says groupie chicks were not his thing.
Its kinda amusing how he tells the story.
I saw it for myself. Not with baseball players, but with minor league hockey players.
I worked at a sports bar here for 5 years and saw a plethora of shenanigans. I bartended . So i had girls come up to me and say things like. "Do you know ( player)? Can you see if he's here?"....."I like ( says players name). Can you introduce him to me?"
Stupid stuff like that..
Some of the guys I got to know fairly well. These were more veteran players. Nearly all of them had wives or long time girlfriends. They wanted nothing to do with the groupies. So, every so often I had to be the 'gate keeper'....They'd ask me to get them to bugger off one way or another. I could be real creative...But nice about it.
What should I do in the on deck circle other than getting timing?
Some years ago, I was at a business convention at a fancy hotel in KC. The opposing team was staying at our hotel. After the game, a #of the players went to the hotels bar for a few beers. My Lord, there were "groupie" woman everywhere!! Tight mini-skirts, high-heels, all dolled-up. One player (I won't mention his name...he was a famous athlete) had probably 8-10 woman flocking around him at all-times. Anyway, that's my "groupie" story.

I still don't understand the groupies thing either here in the USA. I was fortunate enough to travel with the Indians to New York for a series in 2018. It was a Wives/Kids trip so most players were on best behavior but there was definitely a presence of cleat chasers at hotel bar...

Just found this channel and been watching the videos like crazy. Peabody represent! Anyway, a long time ago I worked a part-time job for a brief time as a door-to-door security system salesman, and one of my coworkers was a minor league baseball player who was doing this as his off-season job. He had some crazy stories about how some players would pick up chicks at the ballpark on gameday, right out of the stands. On the flipside, I knew a few other minor league players who played for the team in the town I lived in (not saying where, but it was a AA team at the time) and they were all upstanding guys who did a lot of charity work in the community outside of their team obligations. In short, people in any profession that has the possibility of big earnings will always attract gold-diggers. Those who have their heads screwed on straight will always do their best to avoid them.

I like the honestly, so bashful. Jose Canseco had an internet podcast years ago and went in depth (about 7 minutes) about his stories about groupies and how other players may have ball dates (pretty women that are assigned to attend the road games). With the the stories Joe Canseco had (I believe he's a HOFer along with Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa), he lived the rock star lifestyle especially explaining winning the world series in 1988 was like an 11 day high.

You should talk about Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) next. Obviously baseball went through that era where every record was broken and inflated. Did you get tempted to use them? Did you see teammates use them? Was it just an accepted norm?
I’d like to know how Matt views players like Bonds, Canseco and/or A-Rod! Tremendously talented but they seemed to take away from the game! How do players view them - just part of the “new” game?

Antonelli Baseball You were a young guy when all of this was going on. Just imagine when you are 43 with 3 kids and your wife won’t touch you for a month. You’re going to be really regretful that you didn’t have fun when you had the chance. I think that this particular reality hasn’t hit you because you are still young, but it will. Just sayin man. I’m also kind of the feeling that anyone making less money has less control over their marriage because they never got that big payday. If you’re having to pussyfoot through the minors as a married man, you’ve definitely got much less power than someone who’s making 30 mil a year. It’s not an excuse to go stick your pickle into every roast beef sandwich, but with that thirty, forty, fifty million dollars comes with a lot more power and a lot more control.

I was at the Cleveland Indians game today 6-8-2019, there is a Metric Ton of "cleat chasers" or groupies for ball players down there. Eventually you have to address it.
