Finally someone who knows who Lee Kerslake is and that he drummed on the 1st two Ozzy Albums.Great drumming by you I enjoyed it.
Lee is a Legend!
@@JeffBowders A hero of mine. I'm lucky enough to own his Pearl Masters kit/cymbals/rack/flight-cases etc 🙂 Great video by the way.
@@drumpaul1347 WOW! What a piece of drum history!
@@JeffBowders Almost the holy grail to me. Now if I could only locate his earlier Slingerland kit.....
@@drumpaul1347 now that would be quite an acquisition!!!
So nice to see the mention of Lee. Very underrated player, in my opinion. His playing on those first two Ozzy albums is simply a bench mark for heavy rock drumming. It’s like he was playing along to what Randy was doing. Also, the sound of the drums, especially on the Diary Album is phenomenal. Such a great production and mix. You can hear everything. That being said, I am glad that Tommy did not imitate Lees parts, he kept the basic beats but made the songs his own. RIP Lee, you were a master of your craft.
Yeah, it's really too bad Lee doesn't get the well-deserved credit he earned. But I'm thankful for his amazing contributions.
Best sounding kit on CZcams!
Thanks, Paul! It's that Tama meets Sabian meets Evans meets Vater connection!
You were my first private instructor at MI in 2015, you taught me a lot during my first quarter. Im happy to be able to learn from you on the inter-webs! Thank you and rock on! 🤘🏽
Xavier! Awesome to hear from you! I'm happy the CZcamss can help continue our journey! Hope you're doing great!
It's so satisfying seeing the fill being played with the song after being dissected!
It's even more satisfying playing it!!
I would love to ses Tommy's /Lee Kerslake little dolls and or over the mountain fill break down ,especially the dolls intro, thanks for the this video it really does make a difference when you know what toms are being played .
Great lesson. I’m a single pedal guy. Going to woodshed this right now.
The first time I saw Tommy was before I started drumming and didn’t know who Tommy was. I saw Black Oak Arkansas and thought “this drummer is way too good for this band.”
Second time was with Pat Travers at the Agora Ballroom in Atlanta. He blew my f’in mind. Probably the single most memorable drumming performance I’ve ever seen, and believe me I’ve seen them all, from Peart to Palmer to Bonham, Bruford, Paul, Smith, Adler, and scores more.
Thank you for acknowledging Lee Kerslake‘s contribution!👍
He was a huge part of rock drumming history!
Tommy is like, I can't believe you notated my shit. I just felt it.
As much as I love Lee Kerslake and his original version of this song, something about Tommy's live version always stuck out to me. Seeing him play it on that live taping always made me eager to mix it up every time I played it, and the version off of "Tribute" is no different. The cymbal muting, changing the 16ths on the hihat to 8ths, and those insane tom fills always blew my mind! What an outstanding drummer. Thank you for the excellent lesson and the free PDF!
I completely agree. Lee had a great feel and ideas but Tommy had that extra energy that was undeniable. I'm glad the PDF was helpful!
Great demonstration, great playing, and good lord the sound quality is INSANE IN HEADPHONES!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯
Awesome! Thank you, Mark!
@@JeffBowders yw buddy- I subscribed keep up the great work 👍
@@markcatanzaro9699 will do. Thanks again, Mark. Greatly appreciate it!
That’s sooooo Tommy. A truly rock and roll legend. To me, his most inspiring performance is in crying in the rain, Whitesnake!
Absolutely love his playing on that tune. There's a Yamaha Night concert vid out there where he just annihilates!
Ansley Dunbar played drums on that song, NOT Tommy
@@JCDwyer did I say RECORDED?? I said very clear PERFORMANCE. You can easily find it on CZcams if you haven't watched it yet.
@@dougmorato fair enough, but Recordings are “performances” too, and ya didn’t say live.
@@dougmorato and having said that, yeh, obviously Tommy OWNS that shit live. He’s amazing.
Great job Jeff! I love Tommy's drumming. He's on the top of my influece-list. I saw live twice & he's on top of his game all his life. Unbelievable groove, chops, power, showmanship... Watching Whitesnake's Live in the still of the night always blows me away. And his awesome job he did with Patrik Rondat, god...
Thank You for this Jeff (y)
You're absolutely right, David! In terms of rock drumming, Tommy is the total package. And still crushing it today! What an inspiration for all of us! Thanks for checking it out!
Nicely done. Cool licks
Thanks, Ross!
I always love Tommies fills you need to do crash and burn
Love those fills and his fat/wet drum sound!
Excellent lesson! Thanks for breaking down that Tommy Aldridge feel on the fill. It’s always tough to slow the song down and decipher the order of the toms.
You're welcome, Lee!
Great job my friend. All around. Choice of drummer, song, context, application, breakdown and flexibility! What a nice surprise. Appreciate your time and content. See you soon!
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed this lesson. More to come!
Fantastic content, Jeff’, as always!
I have a long-standing soft spot for Tommy Aldridge. He and Vinny Apppice were the first metal/hard rock drummers who just “clicked” with me in my formative years. I actually saw him with Whitesnake opening up for Motleh Crue when I was in high school, and Tommy A. mopped the proverbial floor with Tommy L. that night. Flash-forward 28 years and I saw Tommy work Whitesnake once again , and he was still a pure rock and roll animal. I’m convinced the Fountain Of Youth is located beneath that ‘fro.
Years later I would finally listen to Tommy’s work with Pat Travers, and that was a real eye-opener. The tasteful way he sprinkled little double-bass riffs in between notes played with his hands was really inspiring.
Anyway, great work, and I eagerly await the best installment!
I feel you, James! Yeah, actually my first concert was '90 Whitesnake w/Bad English - Aldridge and Castronovo, it was a Clash of the Titans for sure where both were victorious. So thankful to see Tommy still crushing it after all of these...DECADES! What an inspiration!
Such a great lesson! Thank you! Would love to hear some Pat Torpey licks broken down like this.
Thank you! Actually, I’m already planning a Torpey lesson. Is there any particular fill you had in mind?
@@JeffBowders That's awesome. There's an excerpt from a bass instructional video where Pat & Billy jam to "Rock & roll over". Towards the end of the song there are so many tasty licks every 4 bars. Even that hook fill going into the chorus, I think it's a 6 stroke roll, but I'm not sure.
@@niacingrooves2998 - I loved his fills on Green Tinted Sixties Mind. Very simple, but oh so well done!
Thats pretty cool. Thanks!
You are welcome!
Maestro Jeff!!!!!!! love u brother & thanx for ur educational books, use them for my students & myself all the time!!!!!!
Mario! Thank you, brotha! Very happy the books have been helpful. Let me know if you have any questions!
As far as I know, Lee Kerslake was a single-bass drummer. It would be cool to have some extra insight on his iconic fills in either "Crazy Train", or "Over The Mountain". I am talking about fills in the "I know that things are going wrong for me..." section, the ones that sound like quadruplets on a double-bass set, becoming the beat ....(also in the fade-out)....and also the opening fill on "Over The Mountain"
@DrumGunner 💪😎👍 That OTM opener
is terrifying! What a powerful, iconic way to
open maybe the best metal LP of all time 🖤
@DrumGunner 🥁🥁🥁 YES!! Grew up
devoted to Machine Head, and that intro
is one of history's great drum breaks, just
impeccably conceived & rendered... Have
you seen Classic Albums episode on MH?
Didn't hear "No One" until years later, but I
did notice Anders Johansson borrowed the
pattern (using ride bell instead of 🐄🔔) on
Yngwie Malmsteen's Trilogy Suite, Op: 5 in
1986! Now there's a monster on the skins!!
@DrumGunner that was on Fireball, not Pictures Of Home.
@DrumGunner yes.
Check out the outro on "Flying High Again". Lee is ghosting on the snare and filling in the notes, with the bass drum making it sound like double bass. What finesse! And accenting notes on the snare, during the course. He was an unsung hero outside of the industry. I'll send a clip of the isolated drum track, if I can find it.
Great lesson, and your drumkit sounds amazing… 👍
Thank you, John!
This lesson was great, thank you!
You’re welcome, Thomás! My pleasure!
Awesome
Thank you, Douglas!
Tommy's playing on Speak of the Devil is pretty awesome too.
Yes! Love that record.
Great lesson
Thank you, Claudio!
That’s awesome!!
Thank you for sharing!!
My pleasure!
Tommy Aldridge is a tough act to follow but my favorite drummer's
Absolutely! What a legend!
So cool! Thanks
You got it, Joshua!
Awesome Video brother!!
Thank you, good sir!
GREAT lesson! When I play this tune with my band this is my go to version. I was doing the ruff on the kicks, but I'm going to fix that now. Oh and I'll need the fills for the rest of the song too. lol Well done
Yeah, I was surprised it wasn't a double kick fill as well considering this is TA-The DB King!
No idea who you are but your drums sound really good
Thanks, Steve! I'm Jeff, let me introduce you to my Tama Starclassic Bubingas. 😆
Oh, and live with Travers, Tommy was over the top. Saw him a couple times back then. Mind you, I was into Rush at the time, so he became a major influence afterwards.
Travers Live Album is my favorite TA album!
Very nice. I like the lesson 👍
Awesome! That's the mission!
Single bass drummer's are the best. I saw Randy Rhoads on the Diary of a Madman tour shortly before Randy died. I have been able to play the accurate drums to all of Ozzy with a single bass drum because I have a rubber ankle.
You win my favorite CZcams name. 👏👏
Saludos desde Argentina muy bien explicado .
My favorite was Crazy Train live with RR and Tommy was flying high playing drums, Ozzy even turns around towards end of song looks at Tommy and laughs a couple times
That's amazing! Tommy is undeniable!
Tommy is one of my big Influences and since I've discovered you. You are also. I'd love to see you break down Tommy's fills and cowbell rhythm for Snortin Whiskey and Drinking Cocaine sometime down the road. I made a vid of me attempting it and it's not to bad lol. Thanks.
Hey Tim! Thank you very much! Now that's a great idea! I've played that great tune with Pat a handful of times, but I'll have to refresh it!
Wow Thank you very much.
Tommy was incredible on the speak of the devil album!
Lee was an influence. Believer has a great bass guitar intro
Bit of a school boy error, Lee Kerslake played drums on Blizzard of Oz, Ooops.
MOST INSPIRING? 73 RAUNCH AND ROLL!!! UP! I would like to know for sure if that SOLO was edited. I believe it was. I have to Add, GO FOR WHAT YOU KNOW, LIVE PAT TRAVERS BAND, I believe was his Greatest Work to This Day!
The rythems, fills changes etc... we're Unbelievable! His wind ups were are and always will be Top Shelf! Just think though, if it weren't for that little ole southern Band outta Black Oak/Jonesboro, Tommy Aldridge Just Might Not be a Household Name in the tens of thousands of Drummer's houses today! Although he Knocks em, He owes it All to that Hillbilly Clan from Arkansas for giving him his foot in the door of Fame. He also Kicked Major Ass with Ted Nugent on that live Album He did with Ted.! One thing about Tommy, Hes So Outrageous Visually and audibley,He Always brings who he's with to the Next Level!!! Truly the oppitomy of a Rock Star, from Lil ole Jackson Miss.
Steve! I love that you have such a great knowledge of Tommy's career! He's has done so much outside of the Ozzy/Whitesnake gigs. "Go for what you know", is probably my favorite. Like you said his combination of interesting grooves and powerfully musical fills is what sets Tommy apart from most rock drummers. Thanks for posting this!
Great job. Insightful and helpful. #Appreciated
Great video !!! Can you break down the drum opening for Ozzys Over the mountain
Thank you! Yeah, that's a great one! I'll put it on the list!
That snare sounds great. Do you happen to know the batter and reso pitch (ie. tune bot) tunings?
Thank you, Greg! Unfortunately I tune it until it sounds good. I do use Evans HD Dry on almost all of my snare because they pretty much make any snare sound awesome!
If one bass drum is good enough for Nicko Mcbrain it’s good enough for me. 😈🤙
Nicko is a Legend!
Do the rest of Crazy Train on Tribute!
Eventually!
Capitol Theater, Passaic Piece-o'-shit New Jersey, 11th row, Randy's side of the stage (thank providence). Though Aldredge made MUCH more of an effort to learn his material than Sarzo, the feel of each number was disappointingly off. Ozzy's relative sobriety and vitality and Maestro Rhoads guaranteed a satisfying event, but I preferred Tommy's work with Travers over what he brought that night. (BTW: Motorhead ruled as an opener!)
Wow! I'm jealous. Can't imagine the energy there.
Necer seen you or your channel and IT BLEW ME AWAY when you said CREATE YOUR OWN VERSION THATS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT... BE UNIQUE you got ny like and subscribe and YOUR KIT IS BADASS. Dont be a drone drummers its killing your GOD GIVEN TALENT. F the yellow brick road lol.
Thank you! Yes, that's what it's all about. Being inspired by other great drummers to help us create our own voice and ultimately become the best we can be!
Lee Kerslake (RIP) is the creator.
Exactly! Which is why I credited him in the vid.

Dude, you should do a video on the hi hat, because your playing it wrong.
Suena bien pero ....Aldridge siempre en ese tipo de combinaciones una el double bass , igual me parece bien
Yes! Tommy is a master of single and double bass fills!
tommy at donnington 1990
I think that was Tommy's pinnacle. Amazing and inspiring!
@@JeffBowders my drumming technic is based on Tommy's playing..
@@deanmc178 you've chosen a great influence!
I fuckin hate this song but that fill is killer and so is this dude.
It's a love/hate relationship. Hahaha! Thank you, though.
Aldridge's stuff with Pat Travers way more interesting.
And Black Oak Arkansas.
I DOUBT SERIOUSLY THAT TOMMY WENT THROUGH THAT MUCH TROUBLE TO PLAY THAT..
Tommy was not on that recording
Tommy is a great drummer/showman but a lot of his playing was other drummers parts, in Ozzy or Whitesnake, he is like the Milli Vanilli of drummers. Just kidding Tommy is a legend.
You may have crossed the line with that Milli Vanilli comment. I'm putting you on report, Phil. 😆
Tommy Aldridge was not the drummer on the studio recording bro. It was Lee Kerslake
Aldrig il re'
Leave Lee's ORIGINAL version alone. Nothing can compare! Love how many say, "Make it your own, express your own voice." That's true to some degree but not when "trying" to teach and especially Crazy Train. Leave it whole, leave it original and in this case LEAVE IT ALONE!
Write the fills... Dude
Hey Justin! The fills are all written out in the FREE PDF you can download using the first link in the description. Enjoy!
This is NOW A JOB???
Lee's better!!
Tommy didn't play this song on the record
You're correct, Scott. czcams.com/video/5uColQY8UPU/video.html
Yeah
Bowers says that at the 1 min mark.
PLEASE..
Get a real job... the airlines need help
