    I am an air craft mechanic worked on C-130’s an a hydraulic mechanic in the marines. I have been working as an air craft mechanic for over over 40 years now. I started my own motorcycle repair shop ten years ago so I can roll into it when I retire from aviation. So I have a very good understanding of mechanics and especially the concept of fluid flow and what causes restrictions on fluid flow and you are spot on in your comments. I installed the cool flow fan assisted oil cooler on my 2015 street glide special several years ago because I was seeing my head temperature sensor showing over 300 degrees. The ultra cool set up on my bike replaced the stock oil cooler and mounted in the same lower location. There is a temperature Sensor that attaches to the plate so when bike oil temperature is below 220 degrees the oil does not flow through the oil cooler this way you get bike oil up to operating temperature and any moisture in oil is evaporated as water boils at 212 degrees. I also installed the PC cleanable oil filter, as you stated the paper oil filter goes into bypass for several reasons. The paper filter is 5 micron opposed to the PC cleanable mesh filter which is rated at 25 or 35 microns. I try to explain to my customers about the differences and why I recommend the PC filter a constant filtration is better than a bypass but some look at me like I have two heads. You forgot to mention that the PC filter also has a magnet and holds engine wear particles. I also installed the Jim’s force flow cylinder head cooling fan to reduce cylinder head temperatures as the heat build up is a by product of combustion and friction heat build up. I also installed a digital dip stick so I can monitor oil temperature. I live in south Florida where temperature is in the high 90’s most of the year with high humidity and I ride two up going from gas tank to gas tank through long rides. With my above modifications I now run a 265 cylinder head temperature when I am viewing it on the highway through my FP3 and when I am riding stop light yo stop light my cylinder head temperature is 240 to 245. Even though you are cruising on the highway and have air flow the cylinder head temperature will rise due to higher rpm’s causing more friction heat build up. If I am stuck in a traffic jam my cylinder head temperature will start to rise above the mentioned temperature range but as soon as I start moving at a steady pace it starts dropping to the above mention temperature. When I stop and check my oil temperature at gas stops on the highway it never goes above 220. So again to the people viewing your video he is spot on and I posted my actual mods to verify your thoughts and I have no affiliation with this channel or the products I installed listed above. Heat degradation to the motorcycle is a slow process and as with what happened to you by the time it shows it’s self it is to late. Sorry for the long post. But when the facts are the truth it needs to be put out there this way someone can do their own research and make an educated decision before shit happens.

      @@BeardedBavarianBiker. the one advantage an aircraft system has is that they have bypass indicators on the filter housing that will pop out when the differential pressure across the filter element is reached letting the mechanic know that the filter needs to be changed. This option is not present on motorcycles so the rider never knows when the stock oil filter is bypassing. In the colder climates the bypass will open on start up due to the motor oil being at a higher viscosity. differential pressure across the filter knows no boundaries. That is my reasoning behind using an aircraft grade mesh filter even though it has a higher micron rating. Wow an engineer that agrees with a mechanic

    Hey John, just before Laconia bike week I purchased the ultracool. I replaced the fanless oil cooler on my twin cam with it. I’m glad I did it . The oil filter is medical grade stainless steel I think it works down to 35 microns and has more area for oil to go through. I was hoping you would have mentioned the magnet on it for any metal that gets that far. It definitely is part of a performance bagger machine. On a side note, when a blacksmith heats metal he cools it in a quench oil not water. The water would make the steel crack. Have fun and ride.

    I was told by an old timer. If you are going to use the under the seat air deflectors only use one. It’ll give the air a good path if you catch with one side and relieve the air on the other side by not installing the second one

    Motor oil at atmospheric pressure can boil at 250 -700 degrees depending on the blend of oil.
    It would be great to find out the boiling point of synth 3 as a lot of us run that. or even the boiling point of multiple oils.

    I installed this cooler and oil filter on my 2019 RGS 114 about three years ago. Running an S&S oil pump, cam plate, lifters, pushrods, and a Fueling Reaper 465 cam and S&S 2-1 Sidewinder exhaust. 111 horsepower after professional tuning. Mostly tour riding on long road trips. I also did the heat gun testing before and after install and it performs as JJ states. Remove the dip stick and take a reading directly into the oil. This cooler performs so well that the cooling fans rarely kick on but will shut off once the temp goes back down. I highly recommend this to all twin-cam an M8 owners.

    Brother, I feel like you just threw us all a life preserver, to save our bikes! Every bit of what you described makes total sense; are you sure that phone call wasn’t longer than an hour?!🤣 A LOT of detail, I can’t wait to see the install. I’m all in on everything you described, dropping temperatures 60 degrees. We love how crisp those engines sound down the road on those chilly fall mornings/days, while it’s running so much cooler. And there’s nothing more important than bullet-proofing my engine, I absolutely don’t want a blown motor from overheating. If I’m being totally honest, I hope the piece also “looks good/looks clean” on the bike🤣🤣 too. You know how dang nuts we can be over how good our bike looks. But nothing more important than keeping that engine cool (I freak when I think of some of the real hot rides I’ve been on and what could have happened, now that you’ve explained this AND that reroute thru the oil filter, OMG!!!) Game changer, life savor! Thanks brother.

    You should junk out the stock Harley oil cooler & install the Ultra Cool unit in place of it. The Ultra Cool oil filter is the way to go as well. Install Love Jugs or some sort of Fan system to cool your heads. You will run even cooler with that combination. I know a lot of people don't like the look of Love Jugs, but they really work & cool down your motor. I'm out in California & as you know it gets hot out here in the summer. I've been running this combination for two years.

    Very informative! Thank you! My 107 Street Glide Special is stock. 55,000 plus miles of smiles. The next accessory for me is the oil cooler fan kit. Harley Davidson does come stock with the electric plug in by the oil cooler so it’s just plug n play with the software ecu temp. Turn on/off change. This kit you discuss I don’t think applies to my stock engine although it’s seems a must for performance engines. One thing I’d like to share. When I first got my street glide my wife complained as a passenger,her right foot at stops and riding in traffic was getting very hot from engine heat. The solution which made a huge difference, was two things. 1) Swapped out the passenger foot pegs for passenger floor boards, and 2) The Harley Davidson,”Cool Fan” which draws heat away from the rear of the motor where it mounts (over tranny) and blows heat downward and away from her right foot. It works very well. Cost from Harley $300.00 plus install and software upgrade. It has three modes, off, on, and auto. I found auto is best. A fan button is installed on one of the button placements on the fairing and as you press the button it cycles through the modes on the display of the bike. I have allot of practical accessories on my bike and the cool fan is my favorite. It doesn’t cool the motor at all. It displaces heat away from the rider and especially the passenger. If this didn’t work I would have ditched the Harley because unhappy wife, unhappy life. I would have had to have gotten some kind of Japanese cruiser or BMW. I’m so glad for this solution as I love my Harley.

    Yeah I have an Ultra cooling fans too. I live in South Texas where it’s hot a hell! Haha
    this Ultra cooling system helps decrease heat by about 20% but it get beyond 95-105 degrees here!
    I recommend to have the ultra cool on constant fans!

    Run a remote oil filter it should cool better away from the front cylinder plus no oil filter in front will cool front cylinder too.

    Hey John, I have been running the ultracool setup for a few months now. 2020 RG 107 465c cam. It does an amazing job keeping the oil temp at the 210 degrees setpoint. Fans will turn on after a few hours riding. Mostly in stop and go riding. Fans run for about 5 minutes at a time. That tells me how quickly it can drop the oil temp. Great product!

      @@tax905972 According to Harley and many others EMITS was not designed to reduce engine temp. It was designed to reduce felt heat to the rider and passenger. There are many test done and shows no reduced engine temp when activated.

    I installed Woods cam/lifters and hydraulic cam plate/oil pump on my '05 Ultra Classic. Needed some help in the cooling department and added a JIMS cooling fan, a Power Vision and a map from Fuel Moto. This helped quite a bit but I plan on adding Ultra Cool soon. The twin cams need all the help they can get in the cooling department.

    I’ll say again make sure you take heat shots of the oil temp through the fill tube. Cylinders will be cooler,but tracking the oil temp is the proper way to rate this cooler. I have a temp gauge for my oil,I could share my info with you. Also I installed mine as well

      The thing kicks on at 220f I think .. but that is 220f measured at the brick not the engine oil in the motor.
      The temp sensor on this one is in the heat exchanger. Those fans are nuts tho
      I can hear the damn things running if I’m riding at 25-30mph lol .. not a lot but can hear it
      It does blow a metric ton of hot air at your leg tho

    Alright, so correct me if I’m wrong but the main idea of a cooling system is to help maintain optimal engine temperature but more importantly, to prevent the engine from overheating when you make it work harder. Not only makes sense to upgrade your cooling system if you are modifying your hd engine to make more power, it’s a must for a build like this or a bigger one. In my opinion, a set up like this one would definitely help with that. Put it to the test John, I know you can do it! 🤣

    Back in 1977, I bought a brand new Lowrider. I never thought much about how hot Harley engines could get especially during the summer months. When I figured out how hot the rear cylinder got, I was amazed that nobody had thought of adding an oil cooler? I finally found a oil cooler for an RV Camper that was used for cooling the transmission and it was small enough to fit just above the spin on oil filter I installed about two months earlier. When everything was installed, I rode my bike in heavy summer traffic then pulled off the road and got my brand new heat temp gun that was still in it's infancy and pointed, clicked and saw my rear cylinder had dropped 20 degrees! It may not seem like a lot now but back in '77 it was a huge amount! Now you can buy those rear cylinder air vents that cool as much if not more than my setup back then. I've been a firm believer in V-Twin cooling since.

    The best setup is both the Coolmax oil cooler and filter AND the Love Jugg fans, because if you are in a high heat situation where the bike is not really moving the fans on the CoolMax oil cooler will not be enough to keep the engine from overheating. It is meant to cool the engine as it is moving...even with the dual fans.

    The guys over at DK customs have a oil filer relocation kit that help get that finned filer out away from the engine heat which helps it cool even better... did one on my stage 4 110 twin cam and it helps so much... love the content John!

    This video got me thinking. I have a stage 1 twin cam 96. Not a performance bike. Anything I do to the bike is with reliability my #1 concern. Im thinking after watching this that a reusable oil filter with better flow would be a wise decision. U made a lot of sense talking about how crappy the flow is through a paper filter. Ur right I had no idea. Great video.

    First off, great content... kudos. A few pointers: The paper oil filters will filter down to 5 or so microns. The problem with paper filters is the inconsistent micron filtering. I believe Amsoil sells the best paper filter on the market. Their filter rating far exceeds most others. I ran the Flo filter on a previous HD in a remote setup where the filter was in a vertical position. My concern with running this filter in a horizontal position is that the filter does not have an anti drain valve. Therefore, you could have dry starts. This is why people fill the filter with oil before installing. You cannot do this with this filter in the horizontal position. The Flo filter will only filter down to 35 microns. However, it is a consistent 35 microns. And make sure you thoroughly clean the filter element and remove whatever cleaner was used before reinstalling. As for the second oil cooler, I would be concerned about over cooling your oil. The engine needs to get hot enough to remove condensation. That is why I always warm up my engine before each ride between 2-3 minutes. Plus, you want the oil to reach the top end before taking off. Most vehicle manufacturers tell you to warm up your engines at least 30 seconds before taking off. Be careful when installing the cooler on the down tube over the factory stickers. The mount will destroy them. Ask me how I know. It would be nice if the back of the fans were blacked out without wording. I ride a 2023 SG with the stock 107. I installed the HD oil cooler and have experienced a consistent 20* + drop in temps. And that has been in all ranging temps with some stop and go traffic. My oil temp now averages between 198-205. Before the fan installation, riding in the same conditions, the oil temps were between 205-231. I monitor my temp after each ride. I agree that your setup is more suited for big displacement engines, which create a lot more heat. The HD bagger race bikes have a wind scoop mounted where the horn sits. It is designed to force more air over the rear cylinder. I have been looking for something similar. If I find it, I will be buying it. HD should incorporate something similar on their factory machines. HD knows that excessive heat kills these engines. The new CVOs at least have some water cooling. We will see if these new engines experience the same overheating. My guess is that HD will eventually design a full water jacket cooled engine. They will have to in order to meet ridiculous EPA standards. And also to keep up with the water cooled Indians.

    Yes John, I purchased the S69 PCBE. It an extra large version of that filter offered only from Cycle Solutions. It is twice as long as the one you have. I got it because of my "chestnut roasting on an open fire." My rear 107 head runs at 300 degrees.
    I feel you on the convection science. Every US submarine relies on fluid median heat exchangers.
    Note: if air cooling worked well Indian would be doing it. Hmmm.
    I just did a 3 hole, no clearance issues.
    I can not do the love jugs but this is a game changer.

    My question is why doesn’t Harley make these stock on the bikes since this is a known problem with these engines. I run ultracool oil cooler, high performance oil filter and on OEM Harley fan that I had to get off eBay to keep my bike cool. Since I did these, now my bike runs around 230 at its hottest. Side note the “bolt on big bore kits” are junk and don’t work unless you do crank case work. And if you buy the kit from Harley they won’t honor their product when it starts to leak.

      @@CYCLEFANATIXgot to stop shutting off the rear cylinder safety feature Harley built into the bike. It will cool the cylinder to protect the engine. If it gets worse the engine is designed too shut down too give it time to cool down. The oil you uses has a effect on cooling , so are you using the recommended oil with enough zinc to keep it cool? This is why I still use syn3. Designed by the oil manufacturer AND Harley Davison.

    I was one of the first to install the Harley Davidson Big Bore kits. You can only go from 107 to 128 and 114 to 131 due to bore stroke. Whatever you do, cooling that engine is a must. Jon is correct, more horsepower equals more heat.

    I live in Georgia. And it gets stupid hot here. My wife's 2021 Street Glide Special was killing her with the heat. So I put on the Ultra Cool system, Harley Davidson oil cooler fan, , Harley Davidson Cool Flow fan by the rear cylinder, Love Jugs, Cobra Catless Dual exhaust, heat wrapped the exhaust, and a Thundermax ECM. The difference in temperature, performance, and fuel mileage is mind blowing. I recommend putting on the Harley Davidson Cool Flow Fan, and heat wrapping your exhaust also. I would bet my life on it, that it would change your life. I'm originally from New Jersey. I never thought about cooling a Harley down until I started living in Georgia.

    Great video John. A lot of really good information but unfortunately a little bit of miss information as well. Ultra cool makes a fantastic product. Not real crazy about the filter but the oil cooler itself is 100% a wonderful idea to put on any Harley. Although nothing will keep a Harley cooler than Love Jugs. I’ve tested every oil cooler on the market and none of them. Keep the engine cooler than Love Jugs. Love Jugs will actually cool the oil, 53.4° and they never even touched the oil. So Love Jugs in combination with a high-quality oil cooler such as this would be the ultimate in engine cooling.

    Yea Been running ultra cool ever since doing 128 on my CVO. Also have the luv jugs. Ultra cool is by far a must on big builds. Install is pretty easy and JJ will guide you if you have install questions

    The one thing is you don't want the oil to get to cold most engines run at 180deg . The by pass is a must for cold days and start up .and if the filter gets clogs .Talking about airplanes , I have had the same problem with my aircraft engine that I built , larger oil filters was a must .

    Went with a similar setup but wish I would have went with that oil cooler with having dual fans would help out a-lot more and give the oil filter more air flow with it being mounted on the side than in front of it.

    Cycle Fanatix, I have looked at Ultra Cool before and after your video, I purchased one for my 2020 Road Glide "The other Woman", she is a standard 107 with Stage 2 S&S 475 cam, Arlen Ness High-flow air cleaner, de-cat'ed stock head pipe and SVT BoneShaker mufflers. Good tune, making 120 HP and 119TQ. I have seen head temps of 315 degrees when it's 100 or higher where I live in the PNW. I am thinking this will be a great solutions.     I just got my ultra cool oil filter in the mail yesterday & can't wait to install and see a difference. The quality is awesome. I'll be putting it on my 98 95th anniversary RK (evo) thats been built so hopefully I'll be able to see a difference in Temps. Great job John.

    I bought a complete kit from JJ and he spent the time explaining to me exactly what you were saying. I am former military aircraft mechanic also and understood the filter issues. Definitely a great product and JJ is the man! By the way, I paid full price for mine. LOL

    Been knowing about this product. It really works well. I think for a lot of people it might turn them off to it because of where you have to mount it. It does take away from the look of the bike. But that is subjective.

    Great video but using a pair of cheap Amazon CHT gauges and probes will give real time cht data before and after the oil cooler mods - much better than using a spot temperature sensor after riding - the gauges don't' have to be accurate - just use the temper difference between before and after using approximately the same outside air temp. - Thanks for all the great videos and info.

    Thanks for all that great info, very interesting. I got stuck in a traffic jam on my 107 M8 so I rode the shoulder carefully to get to the next exit and sure enough Johnny Law pulled up out of nowhere and slapped me with a $120.00 ticket .A lot cheaper than fixing a blown engine. On your 128 build did you upgrade the compensator and clutch pack ? Hope you have a great ride out to Milwaukee, maybe get Sandy to come!

    You also forgot to mention that the oil through this oil cooler goes back into the oil tank first and then it cycle through the engine which allows it to cool motor better

    Guess I'm giving my age away here , but over 30 years ago ( late 80s ) I was running a 96" Shovel.
    I used a 12 volt cooling fan from a foreign car mounted on a bracket where the horn would normally be located. It was controlled by a Klixon switch.
    I welded the ends of the engine guard , enlarged the mounting bolt holes and welded that seem. Welded the hole closed at the top center of engine guard and drilled holes at both sides at the bottom of guard for 1/8 NPT. That engine guard held 3/4 of a quart of oil.
    Used a thermostat to control temperature. It open just over 180 degrees to allow flow.
    Yes I had an oil filter up front to help remove heat.
    You can use your front engine guard on modern Harleys to add capacity and cooling. Just don't grab that sucker.....it's HOT. No, you can't run lower fairings, they melt.

    K&P Engineering is the company that first designed/produced the reusable oil filter. I had one installed on my 2017 M8 RGL after the 1K service. I knew it would reduce the oil temps a little, my hope was that over time it would pay for itself, since it was reusable, just clean and reinstall. Well, dropped the bike off at my local HD dealer for the next required service… I noticed a new Chrome HD oil filter on the bike. I asked “what happened to the oil filter that was on it? I told them it was reusable, just clean it and reinstall it”. The tech “disposed” it with the dirty oil. I said yea, he is probably using it on his own bike. Needless to say I no longer support that HD stealership. I did buy another one since it is an amazing filter!

    So how is it, that harley does not offer oil cooler fan for the softail models, especially the low rider s and st with the 117? I ride my biker hard and its a stage 2. I’m also located in SC which I rode the bike to work today in 102f weather.

There is so much info out there on heat problems with the M8’s and so I have been researching and looking at love jugs for my Road Glide because they seem like the best option. UNTIL I saw this system on a different video and now what you just taught me. I can’t wait to see the review on these because another CZcams’r reviewed the love jugs and they didn’t move the needle at idle on his M8…the temp didn’t really go up but it definitely didn’t drop like they claim.     FYI,I have owned & ridden hd’s for yrs and they all stock or modded benefit from additional cooling.
    I find ultra cools lrg oil cooler with dual thermostatically controlled Elec cooling fans works a lot better then hds stock oil cooler with 1 cooling fan.
    I also installed love jugs smaller dual Elec cooling setup on my Hd too that collectively reduced engine oil temp 50deg f on 90 deg heat.
    Those 2 cooling mods resulted in the following improvements:
    My hds stock motor stoped detonating on hds rec 81 octane fuel where it used to detonate on more expensive 93 octane fuel.
    Reduced oil temp by 50deg f.
    Oil pressure improved from 6-8psi at idle to 12-14psi & at cruise from 30-32psi to 36-38psi at idle.
    Valve train stopped ticking running quite in summer heat.
    The motor retained all the trq,pwr & crisp throttle response it used to always loose in summer heat.
    The motor now spins over fast for quick starts pist fueling up in summer heat because starter,motor & battery aren’t overheated & or heat soaked anymore.
    Gets better mpg.
    Less heat is coming off the motor so more comfortable to ride in summer heat.
    Installing those two cooling mods was the best money vs reward I spent on my Hd.
    And again,all the benefits were on a basically stock efi flhtcu and will do the same for much hotter built hds too esp if you install the much better ultra cool lrg oil cooler with 2 lrg thermostatically controlled Elec cooling fans that’s much better then hds smaller cooler with 1 cooling fan sling with the love jugs sml fuel. Oiling fan setup too.
    I also found spectro’s syn blend & or full syn 20w-50 runs better holing better oil pressure & with less valve train noise along with their great syn oil for the 6spd trans along with their (85wt?) transfer case oil too for easy to find neutral too as long as clutch is adjusted properly (enough disengagement) which is also key to finding neutral too.
    Lastly,oil running 50deg cooler means motors running cooler too which will definitely extend life of all the plastic parts like cam chain tensioners use & or on chain in xfer case too along with also helping valve seals & seals/gaskets in the motor last longer too because of reduced overall engine heat.
    I later installed XIED’s which made the motor Igor smoother with better off idle & low to to mid range throttle response too due to their adjustability allowing you to richen fuel calibration a bit in those areas with only loosing 1-1.5mpg that was well worth the improvement in drive ability.
    I Also installed an external crankcase breather to eliminate the motor from ingesting oil laden over heated air directly into the intake reducing perf/pwr along with prematurely carboning up the combustion chambers & intake/throttle body too.

    Great video John! This is why I love my RG limited, the water cooled heads keep it much cooler! With the tune I got from fuel moto and the wood 22xe cam I put in the bike is running way cooler.

      the twin cooled(water cooled heads) bikes actually run hotter, get a oil cooler for your bike, like he shows you in this video.... the normal road glides come with oil cooler, but the rg limited doesnt, comes with water cooler that just does head

    I put an Ultracool on every Harley I buy. Down here in Florida it is a necessity in my opinion. Had one bike I did an UC and the Love Jugs and never once had an issue, even in Tampa traffic.

    If you go for thew 128 you get a fan, if you get a 131 you get a fan with the kit.

    you could put a heat temp gauge on the rear cylinder head and possibly shut the bike off next time if it get close to temp that could do damage even thought your bike will get a little hotter when you shut the coil circulation off

    With my twin cooled M8 124 s&s I m not seeing any cylinder head Temps in excess of 280F degrees on some very hot days..when I stop in traffic my radiator fans kick on and I see the Temps reducing. If I didn't have a twin cooled M8 I certainly would invest in this oil cooler!
