    The Asustor Nas's are rock solid there OS is 100% reliable ive got 5 of them still going 4 years on no reboot needed at client sites apart from FM, I do sell mostly Qnaps but they have a annoying problem of having to reboot them way too often as the OS is not great when you config change, im taking about every 2 weeks. I agree that 10gbe for a NAS needs to be the minimum now if your installing SSDs or NVME's 1gbe or 2.5gbe is just throttling your investment by up to 80%
    On a side note ive still got 4 Buffalo nas's still runing after 15 years at clients sites that Japanese quality is crazy good and was the first Nas's i every used loved the DLNA back in the 90;s
    Cheapest 10gbe nas is the QNap 262 with the PCI 10gbe card does 850mps for under $500 AU absolute bargin i prev had the 472XT which did 1100mps but cost 2k more..

    10Gbe is finally getting cheaper.. 10 years too late but glad to see it happening. Thanks for highlighting them.
    Remember, cloud is just someone else's servers..

    Just that the switches would be great if they got cheaper and preferably fanless

    I just finished converting my home network over from 1Gb to 2.5Gb so my Asustor dual-2.5Gb NIC NAS is finally fully-utilized and now you're talking about 10Gb?!?!?!

    What are the pros & cons of not mirroring the nvme cache?
    Thinking of using 18 tb hdd to building a 8-disks nas as media server with 2 parity disks.
    With the eventual usable capacity of 108TB, what would be the recommended size of nvme cache? And should it be set to Read only or read/write? 🤔

    • @TazzSmk
      @TazzSmk Před 7 měsíci

      6 HDDs alone should give enough throughput for 10Gbe, so the nvme cache depends on your specific workflows (database, metadata, many users etc..),
      read cache is safer in general, write cache should be only done with two same mirrored NVMEs to minimize data loss

    I have a question, perhaps stupid one but I'm very green on the subject. Are there NAS devices that feature both 10Gbe and Thunderbolt connection? If so, can they both work silmultaneously? I want fast direct access with my main machine with USB4 but also network access from all my other network connected devices. I have 4x 16TB IronWolf HDDs to work with and would use some Gen4 NVMEs as cache perhaps? Dunno how people have this set up and I didn't have much time to google and research the subject.

    10GbE per device may well be becoming cheaper. However to replace my 48 port 1GbE copper switch with a 48 port switch is still a bit of a reach, so I'm happy to wait.

    I own a DS923+. I get iPerf results of 9.5 gbit but only 800 mb/s file transfer rate to a nvme drive. Is this as expected?

    • @john_in_phoenix
      @john_in_phoenix Před 7 měsíci

      I am not sure of the DS923+, but the 3 Synology NAS that I own have a single PCIE lane (gen 3) per NVME slot. In other words, you are getting expected results. I have DS720+, DS723+, and DS423+.

    What about RS2423+ = DS1823xs with SHR - IF you are happy to add an M2D20 card for NVMe or even an E10M20-T1 combo card which delivers NVMe + a second 10GbE port.
    An Amazon UK RS2423+ listing was reduced by 300 quid a couple days ago, making it the same price as a DS1823+, so I grabbed it.
    Migrating from a DS718+, SHR was a deal breaker for me as I have a few drives that will SHR back to life :)
    I am running MG series toshiba HDs which I understand Synology rebrands with their own firmware, so will not be too worried about the incompatibility flag. 12 Bays of SHR is heaven for me. What about that solution? Got to be worth an honourable mention at least???

      then 1821+ with added 10Gbe card will be probably fine as well

    • @guernseybunker1203
      @guernseybunker1203 Před 7 měsíci +1

      DS1821+ AMD Ryzen V1500B vs RS2423+ AMD Ryzen V1780B = significant computing power difference which may or may not be relevant to your application. Surveillance Station for example @ 5M: 40 channels, 600 FPS vs 75 channels, 1500 FPS etc. @@TazzSmk

    • @TazzSmk
      @TazzSmk Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@guernseybunker1203 ah that is true, but it's also worth considering two or more weaker NASes instead of just one for bigger NVR setup

    If one has the $,$$$ the TrueNAS Mini X+
    Starting at $1448 looks interesting -- if one wants to run TrueNAS.

    i'd prefer the storage to be the bottleneck rather than their connection to the network.
