I just downloaded Notion & was about to work on my personal finances. I decided to start with something I actually need at the moment as a starter. Even though I blindly followed the tutorial & wasn't sure what each steps meant, the result is awesome!!

@@choisislavie_essentiel This formula worked for me: if(formatDate(now(), "MM YYYY")==formatDate(Date,"MM YYYY"),Amount,0) Just make sure for the “Date” and “Amount” sections you are linking to the actual property. You can select the property from the menu below since it won’t work if you simply write it out.

Formulas don't work anymore with the syntax in the video after the changes to Notions formula structure. It does work if you simply click on the Properties from the list below and assume it contains [ prop("Name") ] without the brackets. Therefore, don't add extra parentheses like I did.

Very useful budget database. Only recommendation moving forward would be to slow down what you are saying. It was way too fast. I had to adjust my video playback settings. Is there a way to change the Notion color choices to something more vibrant, and have a wider palette?

Hi, I get paid on the final Friday of every month and make payments for the following month, the formula if(formatDate(now(), "MMMM YYYY") == formatDate(prop("Date"), "MMMM YYYY"), prop("Amount"), 0) doesn't work for me as I have some payments in December that roll into January. How can I set this formula up to work from the final Friday of a month to the final Friday of the next month?

What do you do when the month ends to the categories ? do i have to duplicate everything all over again to remove previous month budgeting ?

Loved the tutorial! I have one question, any way to make it update with a fresh page when a new month rolls around? Right now it seems like when a new month rolls around Ill just print the page as a PDF, save it to my folders and then delete the expenses and adjust my budget for the new month ahead

I have one question: when following the PARA Method, where should this Tracker be allocated? Should it be inside something, like a Note, or should it be something separate, like Tasks and Goals? I'm still confused on where to add any kind of Tracker to be honest. I have a Fitness Tracker that I added inside a Note related to my Fitness Project just because I didn't know where to put it.

For those wondering why the categories table is not updating when you insert a new month of expenses; you have to actually wait for the new month to come around in real time for the categories to reset.

Hi, just wondering if the catagories table (that includes an overview of the months expenses) updates and refreshes at the start of each month so you can see the overview of the current month? And also if there is a way to review previous months spending stats?

Hi Man, appreciate this! I have a quick question, maybe I missed it on the video - but how to set a gallery view for total expenses based on the categories per month in a new independent view? (without the "Aa Name Title" column of course)
I think you can create another database, add pages like "January 2023", "May 2023" ..., make the relation to catergory database, rollup the "Spending" from that database, create a formula to capture the number from that rollup (idea is that capture the maxium number within a month). Then you can create add all catergories to the original relation colum for every pages of "January 2023" ... , create gallery view for the new database, group it by name, choose option cover as anything rather than "none" then you can turn off the Aa Name title)
Hi there! I was wondering how would be possible to have sub-itens and be able to se the sum. Ex. If you add sub-itens for Food the collum sum just take in consideration the main category "Food"but don't include the values of sub itens for the total sum. Thank you!

Thanks this is awesome! Quick question: Why do you "limit to 1 page" when you make the relation ?
This is the way to define 1 to 1 relationships. In this case, a page (row/item) in the Expense database must have one and only one category, so it is defined as "limit to 1 page". If you would like to have multiple categories for an expense you should select "No limit". I hope I have been clear :)
Anyone knows how to capture the "Spending" in the Category database after every month passes at the end date of the month and save that capture as a colum in that database?

Hey! Loved the video! got 1 question. Once im done with 1 month for example, i start a new month and on my categories tab i still see the expenses of my past month. How do i fix this?
you have to assgin a date for every expense, so it will automatically capture only the expenses that have the month = the month of now and send that number to catergory database "Spending". You can check if your formula of "Monthly Total" in expenses database to fix the problem

It adds automatically once you put the date of the first expense of that month
The formula for the Remaining balance / budget with the 2024 syntax update is:
prop("Monthly Budget").subtract(prop("Rollup"))
p.s. I didn't have to type the word prop because we can now simply click on the property.

The category database will only show the amount spent for the current month. It won't combine last month spending to current month

If the database "Categories" is summing up all the expenses from the previous month --> go into the Category --> click on the Rollup --> Relation should be Expenses --> Property should be "monthly total" --> Calculate should be "Sum". Now you should only see the expenses of the current month.

Yes found it helpful but if you can redo it going slower then I will be able to follow it. LOL, I am stuck on the month thing. I have the list of FIXED expenses same each month and don't want to redo them each month so I'm trying to figure that out.
You can adjust the video playback speed to the lowest (0.25) and see if that works
