An undergravel filter is a slatted tray which forms a false floor that allows a layer of gravel to be suspended above a water filled space. One or more vertical pipes, called airlifts (or uplifts), are attached to the plate through which water is drawn using a powerhead or an airstone (powered by an airpump).
A UGF is run by an air pump and air stones, or some types can be used with a. We feel that these filters can be very effective, but are best used in tanks under 55 gallons in size, and are NOT appropriate for use in reef tanks. UGF's may work just fine.
These filters are cheap and available in a range of sizes that fit standard-sized tanks from 10 to 55-gallons. They work well for small planted tanks, since debris decaying in and under the substrate provides nutrients your plants can use. They also act similarly to air stones and oxygenate your aquarium water.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I am 65 and used under gravel filters when I first started in the hobby at age 14. Years later I was talked into getting rid of the under gravel filters and switching to expensive hang on the back and canister filters. You are right. Using these high end filters meant constant cleaning and purchasing supplies to run them. In the end, they didn’t seem to work as well for water quality as the good old fashioned under gravel filters. I finally took down my $350.00 canister filter earlier this week and installed a $19.98 under gravel filter for my 37 gallon goldfish tank. The water is crystal clear. Simple, inexpensive, and works like a charm!
That’s what it’s all about Steven :) old but gold as they say!
Been using them over 30 years they are the best
My LFS still pushes the UGF to this day.
Absolutely the best filter! I had one in my first tanks, and had no problems. Plants were very happy, fish too. Then in the last two tanks I had the "new" filters, and it was ongoing problems, and weekly checking the filter. This week I'm setting up a new tank with a selfmade bottom filter. Looking forward to the good old and relaxing fish tank life! Thanks for the video!
Totally agree! And your very welcome :)
I like UGFs a lot but I have had trouble with them in the past with planted tanks and gravel getting underneath the plates. I think if I ever try these again I will silicone the plates to the bottom of the tank to keep them from moving.
LOL, "The Balding Reefer" you got my subscription with that alone
Good man!
Seen a video that used UGF but reverse trickle flow ....and it was planted tank. He had the same problem with mine that in time it gets clogged so he tried this method and still do regular maintenance......good part is...easier to syphon the detritus from the gravel and plants actually liked some oxygen and small water flow in the UGF. I will try that method in the future....Great video...keep rockin.
I'm deffo gonna have to look into getting me some of those when I go for the tank upgrades... Great vid as ever my friend thanks for teaching me my edumacation for the day 😉👍🦆
Honestly mate so cheap and so well
Nice and clean!
Thank youuuuuu
That’s mad how clear the water is!!
Such good, cheap filters
Love UGF's, with angels or anything that needs less flow especially. Having that void under the plate, is super beneficial as well. It's essentially an anoxic filter/ plenum. They cover so many bases it's not even fair against any other filter.
Cheers levi, old but gold as I say! Superb filters
@@TheBaldingReefer definitely!
The fish look stunning too! 🤩
Thank youuuuu x
Fish look amazing, great filter tip mate, I will have to try one out.
There amazing mate!
Had one of these back in the day, my first filter worked a treat! 👌
Awesome these are buddy
My most stable tank. Its a odd cross of Father Fish and Novak. Those to hate each other but both have valid points. I did a layer of baked clay cat litter and fluorite with slow moving air. After about 6 months I just wasn't seeing the stability I needed. So I capped it with sand just a tiny bit enough to sink in the gravel. It got stable pretty quickly after that. I never gravel vac and do a 50% about every 2 months. The water were I live has a problem with having extreme fluctuations of chemical additives and shifts in hardness so as few water changes the better. City wide fish keepers have lost their entire stock because acceptable limits of something got in the water that Prime couldn't fix. One day I realized my canister had quite and my water was still perfect. This is my Bristle nose pleco breeding tank. I have had up to 80 fish and babies or more and 1 single 5 year old Serbia Tetra. I also have an insane amount of plants with no Co2 .Its in year 4 and dang near bullet proof.
Now you tell me after I have bought a large external filter 😆🤣 great video
For yours you need an external, as you won't want to break that aquascape down
Nice vid Tyson Fishy
Hahahaha love it
im still using an under gravel filter they do work well
I love em mate
Loving this idea J..nothing worse than an external filter popping a leak when your not in…
If you get chance drop us a link to the product, best of all were back in the fish room….👏🏻
We will be verrrrry soon ;)
You have grown so much :D I have been here aswell :) Hope you are well lad.
Yes mate all good channel is flying!
I like them.. Haven't used them in decades.. 😆
There an awesome filter to run
I also use an undergravel air bubbles, with undergravel filter
Magic
Cheers han
What I do with my IGF when it is time to clean I put hose down the uplift tube and syphon from under the plate if that makes sense. Gets all the crap from under the UGF without having to lift it, Had 1 tank with an UGF going for nearly 8 years now.
Yep that’s perfect
I've got an oddball 10 gallon tall tank, and I kinda ruined the included power filter. by dropping the whole thing in the tank. Lucky for me, one half of an old 10 gallon tank UG filter fit, so I set that up with one lift tube, and finished cycling the tank. Everything's going good so far, just added my first fish.
Thanks for sharing
Did he say wagwan guys
👍🏻👌👍🏻👌👌
Thank you x
🤣 Jack! Seriously,how old are you? 🤣
Thought they ugf died in the early 80s bro🤣✌️🏴
28 mate!! Old but gold filters
@@TheBaldingReefer definitely in reef tanks, they were the bomb back in the days bruh✌️🏴
I went years before cleaning my under gravel, with low fish load.
I remember 2 inches of gravel on top.
They really are good
Will it work on goldfish as they are massive waste producers.
It will indeed!
Best underground filter is the one connected to a hangover filter
This is very true! Like a filter on steroids
What is a hangover filter?
I don't like them I have had them before never got on with them
How come bro?
