- Lyrically, this album came from a very personal and honest place. We had a lot of time to work on the lyrics even before we began tracking. Here’s a little look into the lyrical process and inspiration behind Hushed and Grim.

Brann is a vampire. He's still not aging. :D Hushed and Grim is such a great piece of work and art.
Just look at drummers who seem to age slowly - Gavin Harrison. Ringo Starr. Tommy Igoe - who is nearly 60 and looks about 45. Brann. It's the fountain of youth.
He looks so good. He's taking care of himself. Probably no drugs, smoking or excessive drinking. Handsome dude 🔥🔥
The best band of this century somehow continues to get even better. This is true both lyrically and musically.
Literally every album improves upon the last and that has yet to not be true. It's honestly astonishing.

There are some amazing, emotional lyrics all across this album. Eyes of Serpents and Gigantium back to back, in particular, are emotional powerhouses.

I aspire to have the same mindset to my looks someday as Brann has had to his look. Dude has been looking exactly the same for 20+ years! Maybe one day he just looked in the mirror and realised "this is my look" and has been content ever since.

Easily my favorite Mastadon record to date.
Fantastic album. These dudes know how to create atmosphere which is, I think, the greatest quality a musician can have. Each track drives an emotion to create a sonic landscape that blends overall into a melancholy yet blissful amalgam. I saw another commenter on "Pain with an anchor" say these dudes aren't musicians, they are sorcerers. I think that is accurate. Thank you guys. This album is a gift that came at a time of hopelessness and despair.
Agree. That is what attracted me to mastodon. The lyrics being relateable, real or whatever is cool and all but without the sonic landscape that Mastodon creates to express those emotions it wouldn't be special.

Thank you for so many things. Creating, sharing, being, are some of the first that come to mind. The art you are creating is so wonderful in so many ways that words just fall short.
This band has such great albums. They sink in more and more as you listen. Good stuff man.
been a mastodon fan for 15 years and i have to say this record is very hit or miss with alot of ppl ive talked to in person. for me its a miss. but that doesnt mean it cant be good to someone else. i love mastodon and hope they keep going even stronger.

So glad I got to see these guys in Philly yesterday. The new songs they played are obviously the least I’m familiar with since the songs on past albums I’ve had 100+ listens to. The new songs sounded as if I’ve heard them just as many times as the rest of the setlist. They are timeless and Mastodon definitely does not have to worry about touring on these songs for the next 10+ years. This is a great album.

I feel like thus album is a continuation of cold dark place which imo is them at their best....This band keeps evolving and getting better all the time....More than I could chew is a masterpiece I genuonely didn't want that song to ever end
Got my vinyl copy the other day. Still think there's too many songs but those that work are up there with anything they've ever done. They're a good little group with a bright future.

This album is a damn masterpiece and more people need to realize it. I don't know why they couldn't play one or two songs on the radio because there are radio-friendly songs on the album.
I think he meant they're not written specifically for radio, I'm sure they're getting radio play but that's not the main focus in writing them.
Such a wonderful album with a deep underlying meaning :)

Best band of the 2000s no question. Plus album wise - way more consistent than Metallica. And I LOVE Metallica. Chronologically - Hushed And Grim is their St Anger but ironically it's a double like Load and Reload. Mastodon managed to make their double album a career best. Almost ten albums in 22 years and no duds yet. Incredible.
@THERE WAS NO CHECK!!! Theres 4 of them and they make heavy music. You cant tell me that Remission - Leviathan - Blood Mountain - Crack The Skye - The Hunter don't have a similar progression to Kill - Ride - Master - Justice - Black.
I look forward to hearing these songs live for the next 10 years but I hope it's not 10 years till the next record!

Brent seems really absent from this record, absent from the making-of, absent from the promotion of the record.
I get the feeling for the last few albums he's been putting most of his creativity into his other bands. I've just read that he said (in November) about his new side project “I wrote way more songs that I chose not to put on the [new Mastodon] album because me and Matt Pike are starting a band together and we’re gonna work an album up and I’m gonna use a lot of that stuff for that. I kinda held back on purpose.”
@THERE WAS NO CHECK!!! I know. He does seem to have a lot of side projects on the go which isn't necessarily a criticism but maybe he's just lost the love for being in Mastodon. I've got to say that I do like the Giraffe Tongue Orchestra album that he put out a few years ago
@@hirsutebodkin6888 If I had to choose someone to quit the band i'm sorry to say it would be Brent. The other 3 seem to be way more into it these days. But nobody could replace him - which is the problem - he has such a unique guitar style coming from a banjo background. Buti've always said if the band splits - it would be because of Brent. He's always getting in trouble. Bill seems to be the main writer these days and if Brent only turns up for studio and tour i'd be ok with it.

I was really excited to shake his hand in a pub before one of their gigs on the once more round the sun tour and mastodon wouldn't be the same without his solos but I think they could be so much more if he was totally engaged, but I guess you can't have everything
@@hirsutebodkin6888 Brent wrote The Lions Share of Crack The Skye but I think Bill wrote most of Emperor and Hushed with Brann.
I love this band and record but writing real lyrics is not some revelation lol. I think there's a little too much patting themselves on the back going on from producers , regarding simple stuff that hundreds of artists are doing today or any era.
New album is meh. Not their best work. They peaked with Once More Round the Sun.
