Great review! Out of all the big German SUV's i've always liked Mercedes, especially as far as engines go. We filmed with a diesel ML once and it was perfect.

Great review Guido! I love the exterior and interior too but it's sad to hear that it doesn't drive as nice as the Touareg. My favorite SUV is still the Macan and I don't think that will change anytime soon. What a great year it's been for you Guido! You showed some great variety in your reviews and I enjoyed them all but I think I liked the Maserati reviews the most because they aren't covered too much anymore and it was great to see you in a new brand that you really seemed to enjoy. Great review! I like the fact that you are reviewing these SUV's as they will end up being used by 99% of their owners. Nobody will seriously off road or track these vehicles. SUV's are mainly about misguided feelings of security, superiority and although North Americans won't admit it practicality. I too may end up getting one of these vehicles (leaning towards TDI Touareg) but driving enjoyment is still at the top of my list so the Cayenne might take the prize.

Greetings from Los Angeles. The best no BS car reviewer ever. I came across your channel when you reviewed my mid-life crisis vehicle-Porsche GTS or the Cayman GT4:)) I guess I'm wanting another clutch/stick shift vehicle again. I'm in the market now for an SUV bc my '13 Nissan Pathfinder was confirmed to be a Lemon car! Now I'm going on my first German car and it is either going to be a new X5 luxury line with 20" wheels or the gle 400 AMG package but I don't know which one yet? All I know is it drives better than my Pathfinder.

You do very nice reviews!:) So, hearing your opinions about Touareg and GLE, which would you buy as a daily driver SUV? my fathet has a non-facelift mk. 2 Touareg and it's a great reliable, economical, comfortable and capable off-road car :) Can't wait for your new videos!

In this class I think the Volvo XC90 is my pick.

You mentioned coasting (or lack-of in the GLE).
Can you explain what, if any, sensation there is to the driver when a vehicle does "coast" ?
Can you sense a free wheeling (for lack of a better term) happening in the drivetrain?
Also, is it common to see larger SUV vehicles like this in Germany, particularly where you live?

+Mario Dalla Riva Thanks Mario ! Yes these SUVs are very popular in my area. Mainly the ML/GLE, Touareg and X5 and loads of smaller SUVs from all kinds of different brands. I think the smaller VW Tiguan is the best selling one here...Coasting simply feels like rolling in neutral. Downhill it really works excellent in these heavier and big cars. The first time I sat into a ML350 I really loved this. I'm sure the GLE400 is even better. However they only sell diesel version and Japan so too bad. I will go for E Class.
Great to see a reviewer give an open and honest review of the good, bad and the ugly of the vehicle they are driving. So many times I've seen reviewers skim over details that are bad because they don't want to offend. (Maybe they don't want to get cut out of the perks loop?) Many of these new electric steering set ups are not nearly as good as their mechanical counterparts - all in the name of fuel efficiency?
So the VW wins over the Merc? Hmmmmm. I wonder where the Jaguar F pace will fall.
+kevin n Postive reviews won't make a change in the way manufactures treat you as a freelancer. At least from my experience. Jaguar never kept their word to provide me more testcars after the XK. But the Q7 and Cayenne are coming until spring ;)
Personally I'm not interested in the bigger SUVs but I'm sure those reviews will be popular. I'd say you might want to try and get a F pace since this is the car Jag really wants to push it as their main production vehicle.
I would like to see a review of the BMW X5. Keep up the excellent work.

It's sad to hear that in a lot of reviews the Mercedes gearboxes, AMG or otherwise, usually come up as a negative. They should really work on that. It's great that they're doing their own thing and not just take the ZF as everyone else but it definitely is an issue these days.
As for the car, I prefer the GLA and GLC over the two bigger GL-models. But if I had the means for a proper "SUV", I'd get the good old G ;-)
+slaWterCH I would have loved to try a diesel with the new 9G tronic, but MB picked this model for me to test. I tried getting a G-Wagon but they didn't seem to have one for me. Maybe in the future. What a legend that car is :)
+TheGetawayer A G review would be amazing. I drove a 1998 (or so) version once and it was really cool. The new modern GL cars are way better for daily usage but the G simply gives you this feeling like you are unstoppable ;)

I have this car in Manhattan . Gle 400 4 matic 2017. It beats the f pace and discovery sport. Beast.. really nice car!!. It has the best ground clearance

i didnt realize the mercedes SUVs were popular in germany, i thought they were mostly for the US market. they are certainly everywhere here in the new york city suburbs.

Great review, agree, the new mercs do look great but their transmissions and steering across all lines seems to lack compared to Bmw. For suv's I just bought an Acura MDX since I needed 3 rows, so they sell them in Germany?

Frohe Weihhnachten, Guido. I drove the ML 350D for 2 weeks in England on small country roads and I found the steering lifeless too. The car does the job--it's big and tall and comfortable--but driving it is a joyless experience. I found it a task rather than a pleasure. Last week I took delivery of my C450 AMG. Now that is a fun car! Even on Dallas roads. Have you tried it?

Guido; very nice review! I believe the GLE 400 looks striking inside out with spacious interior and high quality materials! The competition will also have pros and cons but once you drive a Benz there is no turning back as it is the Best or Nothing :)) I loved watching your C63 507 edition review; you said the transmission has a little delay in shifting then you said you can live with that and the same goes for the GLE :))Happy New Year

The nomenclature of Mercedes SUVs relate to corresponding sedans, as you told us: the GLS corresponding to the S-class sedan, etc.
My question is, "Why does the dual information displays in the S-class not appear in the GLS?" The GLS would be purchased by me, and others, if we felt certain that the correspondence of the two vehicles was more than lip service.

Great looking car no doubt. Would love to own one. Im too broke earning minimum wage. Dreams are just too far achieve sometimes.
Guido, this car is extra developed for the US and their road conditions, which are in some states very bumpy. If the car would shake your steering wheel at every road bump, it would be a hard ride. So the steering is designed as soft for driving comfort on potentialy bumpy roads.
+Rick2010100 Good point, but I think a steering rag like in the Touareg or Cayenne would still be a benefit. I don't think the US market is bigger than the whole european or russian market combined, where driver's world prefer something abit more direct
TheGetawayer This car is exclisevely designed and made in and for the US market. By price and road comfort comparison, this car will not find many customer in Europe, as they prefer a harder ride and give a s-ht on cupholder.

TheGetawayer This car will find here also his customer, but not in significant numbers. There is also one major reason. This car behaves horrible on the Autobahn at higher speeds.

+P2nkzSB Yes, well the Touareg was fully loaded and the quality of the materials used was very impressive for me. Check out the review, there are a few shots in it, but I also mention the SL63 in the Toureg review as the car with the nicest interior I tested this year :)

I think it depends on the market area / country you would buy it. In germany here big SUVs lose alot of value over the years. My guess is a fully loaded GLE like this would be around 50.000 Euro now
Without tax you could find one easilu for under 45k

I don't like the Back of the car, i think it looks outdated, the front is nice and the interior is ok (great quality but the design is not that great imho) reading and watching reviews seems that the Mercedes suvs are the worst between the luxury ones in the dynamics. Anyway great review, can't wait to see how other suvs compare

I own this exact car and a 2014 ml350 before it. I found the newer one is worse in a bunch of ways... stupid auto start stop, jerky transmission around 2nd gear, door handle touch lock sensor less sensitive, less legroom in back seat, only single disc cd player, cannot CLOSE the trunk with the key fob, dash pad not as soft against resting knee, and the car drives and parks far bigger than the ml did. Also because the gle has that big double glass sunroof, there is a lot more wind and road noise than the ml (that had a single sunroof with a solid sliding door to block even more noise). Dont get me wrong i love GLE, but if i had a 2nd chance i would've kept the ml (that cost me HALF what the GLE did)!!

doch schoen du meinst das verhalten vom fahrzeug?Ich glaube dass wenn man nach Fahrerlebnis und dynamischem Verhalten usw sucht soll sich man eher nach AMG Porsche oder M kaufen , ansonst wenn du jeden tag jede Kleinigkeit der strasse fuehlst dann is es am ende bissl unangenehm oder?
I can't get away from the fact that Mercedes interiors are too shiny, and designed for show offs maybe? (sorry owners of Mercs!). Whereas Beemers are a little conservative. I drive an Audi-somewhere in between hopefully.

The newest MB interiors on their sedans are stunning...but the SUVs are ugly. Do they use the same designers? No way possible that the same people who designed the newest S or C class, turned around and did this.
+golfbuddy1969 It's their an older design from the ML. I'm sure the new GLE will get the same look when its coming out. Take a look at the new E-Class, that's one utterly stunning looking interior too
The Cayenne is still unmatched in it`s class.
I wouldn`t be interested in this mushy ride and dated styling.
