Hypothyroidism Diet Tips (FIX Your Thyroid With Food)

- No matter how you look at it, your diet has the ability to negatively or positively impact thyroid function. Today I want to talk about what type of changes you can make to the foods that you eat to improve your thyroid if you have hypothyroidism. These tips and tricks will help your thyroid function more optimally so that you can not only produce enough thyroid hormone but also convert that thyroid hormone into its most active form.
These tips are primarily targeted at those with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, low thyroid, and a sluggish thyroid.
Tip 1: Find a whole food-based diet and stick to it for at least 90 days.
It doesn't really matter which diet you use but here are some of my favorites and some that I have personally recommended to thyroid patients in the past: whole30, elimination diet, keto, carnivore, paleo, AIP, and gluten-free/dairy-free/soy-free.
Tip 2: Avoid calorie-restricted diets. It may be tempting to reduce your calories if you are trying to lose weight but it can be damaging to your thyroid if you do. Instead of using sustained and daily calorie restriction, focus more on intermittent and prolonged fasts.
Tip 3. Eat to reduce inflammation. Foods can either be pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory in nature and you should focus on foods that reduce inflammation rather than promote it.
Foods to eat include fruits, vegetables, non-processed healthy oils, fish, nuts, and seeds.
Foods to eliminate include dairy, gluten, processed foods, seed oils, foods that personally trigger you, coffee, soy, and excessive amounts of goitrogens.
Tip 4. Eat to increase certain nutrients. Thyroid patients have a higher demand for certain nutrients than the average population and you should focus on foods that are rich in the following:
Zinc - oysters, beef
Magnesium - pumpkin seeds and chia seeds
Selenium - brazil nuts and tuna
Iron - red meat or nuts
Tyrosine - animal sources of protein
Iodine - fish, yogurt
Tip 5. Finally, realize that you may need more than just dietary changes. Things like exercise, the use of supplements, getting enough sleep, and stress management are all important as well.

The coffee one really hurts 😢. Most thyroid patients have low energy.
I just enjoy the ritual and take in the morning.
And when you realise the reason you have thyroid problems is probably down to coffee...you still wont give it up....pretty strong drug hey.
Are you sure you are not having insulin resistance?
try pranayama and yoga, not just for energy but for healing your thyroid😊
i do this energizer every day , it works wonderfully for energy and mood /watch?v=pXgRqr1dsOM
and i do ujjayi breathing for healing the thyroid, which is basically ocean breathing , then holding the breath in with chin lock for at least 10 seconds(the longer the better) , then releasing the chin lock and closing the right nostril , exhale through the left
do it for at least 11 minutes a day and even the first day you might feel better already :)
You can replace it with dandelion coffee. Tastes a bit similar. Dandelion is good for the liver and not addiction
Bloating issues with low thyroid
I gave up coffee for 4 months but then found out it is a real super food. The real bean not freeze dried. I then bought a coffee after a grueling train journey. It was like nectar. It helped a lot. I think too much coffee whips the adrenal glands but I have one a day 4 hours away from thyroid meds because it decreases them by 30% if you drink coffee too close. I think it's about moderation in the end.
Wait…what?!? I can have COFFEE? Oh Sweet Jesus! I’ve been on a coffee withdrawal for the past 5 days and I feel like crap.
Everything in moderation. Best advice I got when I was a teen.
@@michellelalonde5318 I hear you on that but sadly I love it a little too much & haven't been able to tame the beast. I did try to quit aft coffee & turned into a zombie :(
Thank you Doctor Childs for sharing your ideas and information. God bless 🙏
Thank you doc Childs for sharing your ideas. God bless 🙏
Thanks so much doc for the time you put into the research it takes to provide this information 🙏
Yes! I am very GRATEFUL
I really appreciate the way you presented all the information clear and actionable thank you!
Excellent information. Thank you.
@Dr Westin Childs Thankyou very much *You are the best , bar none*
One of your videos you did with a guest, soy was recommended. I've always heard soy is not recommended for thyroid patients, esp those with hashimotos.
Dr. Westin Childs, I have been reading about OXALATES and its possible disturbance to the thyroid gland in the form of oxalates crystals. I am reading Dr. Sally K. Norton - "Toxic Superfood". What is your opinion on this topic? I've been adamantly listening to your videos and all the information about Hashimoto's which I find so valuable. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this post. Blessings to you and your work!
I am so grateful for all the good work you do for us. I learn so much.
I was slowly gaining weight, feeling cold and listless, and this had been going on for a while with no diagnosis, when I began an intermittent fasting diet to try and lose weight. That was when I got really sick. It still took over two years to get a diagnosis, but the fasting was when the real trouble started, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
I had one thyroid removed. NP Thyroid made me fat all over. I was negative for antibodies and doctor ok'd me taking Iodoral after iodine urine test came back low. Iodoral made me feel well and reduced pain. Dr ok'd stopping NP thyroid and I asked for T3 and he ordered. He is a functional doctor out of state and we zoom.
Dr Childs, Please have Sally K Norton, MPH on your show to educate you on the necessity of cutting out oxalates! You mentioned eating sweet potatoes, chia seeds, spinach, nuts. Also, selenium toxicity is too easy to do so please raise the flag on that point.
Intermittent fasting can cause thyroid problems. I looked into it from genuine online sources.
@@mares3841 I'm just now learning about lectins/oxalates & it's thrown me for a loop but it's better to know this. Info is constantly changing lately
u need lg doses of vit D daily
I am a keto way of eating, mostly to control blood sugars. I guess I could tweak that by eliminating the dairy, or reducing dairy to butter. I had a TT 8 years ago, and doing my best to live the healthiest that I can.
thank you, no calorie restriction as long as your eating Whole Foods
I heard the SPIKE proteins reduce T3 levels, so expect MORE issues for everyone. Big thanx to Bill G@tes and Mr. G S0r0s, not to mention Dr. Faust.
Dr Faust! 😂 love the nickname!
Almonds should not be eaten by people that are hypothyroid. They have goitrogens and everybody that is on keto low-carb is eating almond flour for all their baking. I started doing keto and it helped my hypothyroidism tremendously. My TSH numbers started going down, but I had to eliminate almond flour.
What do you use instead?
I didn't know I had a thyroid condition or thyroid nodules until I went on the carnivore diet and some of my symptoms got worse.
I experienced, fatigue, swollen neck glands, a hoarse voice, bloodshot eyes, infrequent bowel movements which were easy to pass but sometimes didn't come for 8 days, sore throat and pressure in my chest.
I went to the doctor for the swollen glands and it was only then that I had a scan of my thyroid.
I have had repetitive strain injury and fibromyalgia for 40 years
That was the first symptom and since then the others slowly crept in
I am grateful that the carnivore diet actually made me worse because it was only in getting worse that I finally got a diagnosis
I am so grateful to Dr Childs because there is an awful lot of information on the internet about how wonderful the carnivore diet but very little about how harmful it can be for some people
I have been on the carnivore diet for only 10 weeks and it is time now to slowly reintroduce vegetables
I don't understand the really gung-ho people who love getting on the internet and talking about how wonderful it is to eat meat only
Eating meat only is boring
can you talk about Oxalates? do they a/effect the endocrine system. I have tons of Calsium Oxalate kidney stones in my kidneys from eating soup made with spinach. I had no idea about oxalates.
Regarding tuna, albacore has way more mercury than light tuna. Mercury being a halogen is bad for thyroids.Other ones are flourine chlorine and bromine. I only drink filtered water with flouride and chlorine removed. Bromine is in a lot of baked foods.
Also used in hot tubs and pools instead of chlorine.
Mercury is not a halogen
Thanks Dr. Childs. I have bloating, cobstipation and extreme fatigue. I am losing weight, not gaing.
Hypothyroid all day... Gaining ia usual but not necessarily
Super excellent 👌 Pls tell me diet plan for hyperthyroidism also.
Ray Pete diet ❤
These guilt vor Hypertiroid also ...? ❤️
Thank You 🙏
With intermittent fasting, how do you recommend starting?
You can have low energy, but I had it from being B12 deficient too. Sometimes I wonder which is affecting me. I do get blood work for both
I exercise and I believe I eat well and I can't lose weight. I try so hard.
I feel your pain...it's hard to struggle, and nobody else wants to hear it, so its pretty lonely, too. I wonder, is there any little food you have daily thats really not "bad" but you kinda wonder if you should give it up? God bless ❤️🙏❤️
I added in lap swimming 3 times a week this really helped me. Also no dairy, no gluten,. I take Synthroid one hour before my morning coffee, yes I won't give this up, I added brown rice for carbs with chia seeds and blueberries in rice cooker with some olive oil and coconut milk for breakfast and a quick snack, take multi vitamin, and no matter what everyday I exercise for an hour doing something, weight lifting high reps low weight increased weight loss
Me too😅
Hi , is it the coffee by itself or the caffeine ? Ty
Is avocado oil healthy? What about a daily cup or two of hot tea?
Do these tips still apply for someone who no longer have a thyroid? Thank you for all your content- I can't tell you how helpful they have been in my hypothyroidism journey!
Good question.
How did you fix your thyroid problem if you don't mind telling?
I would like to know this too!
I switched from coffee to tea, it def made a difference.
Tea depletes iron. So check your iron levels are good 🌸

my diet includes nuts and eggs in the morning then the afternoon vegetables and some rice then fruits and I end my day with salad, I have never experienced weight gain or any other symptom except hairfall which is not resolving for over a year and I'm confused about how to treat this? I do take selenium, zinc, iron, d3 supplement too regularly
Not everyone with a thyroid issue is FAT!!!!
Also I eat super healthy so that in itself is difficult to get a lot of calories in…
A lot of us have deficient hydrochloric acid in our stomachs so protein not being processed correctly... I've found that Betaine Hydrochloride tablets help to get more of the protein/aminos into the body... also Wobenzyme..for enzymes
Not only that but dysbiosis, malabsorption or leaky gut. This aspect is especially challenging.
Wobenzyme was purchased by Atrium Innovations which is a Nestle company. The product is not of the same quality anymore. Avoid.
@@olderandwiser127 yes i have noticed the products they have bought have no function. I bought a probiotic from an organic shop and after using a while without any effect, i checked the parent company only to find it being Nestle. I avoid Nestle foods and drinks so i wasnt happy about them taking over some supplements. Apple cider is far superior than any enzymes in the market. Just make sure its raw. Braggs has been destroyed. It is no longer a good cider
I have hypothyroidism. I take ozempic and have been taking it for a year and have only lost 10 pounds. I weigh 161 pounds. I am 5’3” i have stopped losing weight! I don’t take any other prescriptions other than a statin and an estrogen patch. Why am I not losing the weight? I exercise and I try my best to eat right. Please help. I’m not understanding and I’ve lost motivation to try anymore.
It sounds like you are a candidate for trying the carnivore diet.
I had a complete thyroidectomy. What foods should I eat to stay healthy and not gain weight and become diabetic?
Same here! I like to know the answer to this as well!
Can you please make video about people who had RAI treatment with recommendation about food, blood tests and supplements.
Yes, I'll add those topics to the list.
@Dr. Westin Childs gm can you please assist with my questions.
1. If I am on 100mcg or 125mcg of euthyrox is that a gd dosage to start using Your T3 & T2 Supplements.
2. I am seeing them on Amazon as well is this from you.
Does avoiding soy include edamame or is it just processed type foods made from soy?
They do better with parents too & non iffy family & without drugs to deal with loud iffy family, but if u have one u want the other ! 💝
Guys my thyroid doctor also confirmed that stabilizing your vitamin d levels is so important
Try to keep this in your mind
i eat whole food nased plant diet. stopping levothyroxine and using herbal tinctires for endrocrine system. Bloodwork has been normal for years. your thoughts?
Very nice im trying the same thing wish me luck
DR westin are you accepting patients, if so where is your practice? I definitely need your help. THANK YOU
That's pretty much everyone here, am I right??
If you read the description box, he no longer is a licensed physician.
Could you get a false negative in the thyroid tests. If you have hypercalcemia you get polyuria then you get hypokalemia leading go constipation and pancreatitis so perhaps diet is still the best to change. The problem is whether there's an infection ongoing.
Can I eat papaya so many websites saying no but seen on another website yes. Thank you
What about goats milk, cheese and butter? Should they be avoided as well?
Vitiligo. I developed this 20 years ago. Doctors said it was the end of Hashimotos. Is there anything to help reverse this
What is the correlation between vitiligo and hashimotos?
can you dplease discuss insulin resistance and Hashi?
Yes.
No one on these channels ever says do not eat sugar ie added sugar not fruit sugar or carbs from rice etc...BS spikes and issues can be an issue and cause inflammation, I have AI thyroid disease - just reduced sugar intake drastically and inflammation down a LOT - like a LOT. I think people should be saying No added sugar, as well as gluten and dairy and soy for Hashi's .
Hello, how about hyper thyroid diet
Dr Childs in your experience, does chronically low b12 affect your ability to convert T4 to T3? I have no terminal ileum & REALLY need b12 injections but in my country they won't give them for levels over 130, in spite of having multiple sx including many neuro sx & other markers such as high folate (which can mask blood count changes you see with b12 deficiency). I don't supplement folic acid, it's from food only. I understand the high folate is from lack of b12 to use it. My TSH & T4 are at excellent levels but my T3 is very low. I'm on no thyroid meds as only T4 meds are an option where I live. Many of my low T3 sx may well be due to low B12, but I think the periorbital oedema & missing ends of my eyebrows are thyroid.
Have you tried b12 patches? I just started so I can't say how effective, however I'm hoping it works as dose is high. Plus whole range multivitamins in this one I bought.
@@zeldalefaydo you have an update on the patches?
@@samanthaelle88 I like the patches, although it turns out my b12 is already good, (608!) And my mouth symptoms persist, so still figuring out what cause might be with Dr.
I used patches after I had blood test before results came back, assuming my level would be low and it wouldn't do any harm.
@@zeldalefay thank you! I'm newly diagnosed, so still trying to figure this out. Started B12 and Selenium. What mouth symptoms are you having if you don't mind me asking?
@@samanthaelle88my mouth feels like burning, my tongue is torn looking down centre, to the tip, and pale either side, with loss of taste buds, like flatter/ bald looking surface skin. My dentist suggested I get b12 test because that was his understanding of how it looked.
What would you suggest as a good replacement for coffee?
Chicory. No caffeine and it does good things for the body.
I do all of these things and still I’m not skinny yet 😔😢 it’s been 3 months….
Is it true that if you take a zinc supplement you should take copper too?
Yes
Yes!
Ooooh really, Coffee reduces your Thyroid Meds effect by about 30%??
Thanks, I'll try timing my indulgence treat a few hours later and see if I feel different 😊
What about kefir, or a goat kefir if i dont consume any other dairy?
Right .. dairy intolerance.. here..can I have kefir??
But Yoghurt is diary... Is it still OK?

Doc, you told us to avoid coffee, but is DECAFFEINATED coffee all right?
I hope he answers this question.
Most decaf coffee is high in chemicals i think
All coffee is bad, even green tea...avoid all caffeine as they are high in salicylates. I recently discovered that salicylates, oxalates and histamines are the reason why i became hypo. Google videos and articles on "foods to avoid with salicylates sensitivity" as well as salicylates and thyroid function and you'll get a better picture of what i mean..
You need to consume what’s best for you. If you don’t feel coffee affects you, keep drinking it. If you keep listening to every “expert” out there, you’re going to have this weird relationship with food.
IODINE from Seaweed

Yogurt belong to dairy but you say it is allowed? Can we have a clarification about dairy in general?
That's because yogurt contains live and active cultures (probiotics) that help you digest the lactose. Just make sure you get unsweetened plain organic yogurt. :) Avoid cheeses, especially aged ones. Aged or smoked meats (deli, smoked fish,.etc) also not good. Avoid foods high in oxalates, salicylates and histamines.
@@consciousagent Thanks! Nice channel by the way!!
Just keep in mind that not all Hashimoto’s/Hypothyroid patients react or need to avoid the same/exact foods. You need to find the root cause of your disease. I’ve limited my dairy intake significantly but I still consume cheddar/parmesan cheese made with raw milk. I avoid eating other dairy though. I also use Ghee here and there. No issues. I believe it’s the overly processed foods that are problematic. Especially for me. I don’t eat out at restaurants either. I read one woman’s story about how she put her Hashimoto’s in remission and consumes all the dairy she wants. You have to do what is right and best for you. What Dr. Childs provides are just recommendations doesn’t mean you have to do what he says.
Dr Westin you said thyroid patients do better without dairy but then you said to eat yogurt for iodine deficiency. I am confused!
I just mentioned that yogurt has iodine, I wasn't suggesting that you need to eat it :) You can get iodine from plenty of other sources.
I have Hoshimotos and have found that I feel better when I consume dairy.
@@drwestinchildsthis is the kind of answer I expect from doctors... Why mention that yogurt has iodine if you aren't suggesting it be eaten for that purpose? This is a terrible response to a person who had a legitimate question.
@@tobychaba I'm a healer not a doctor and have been healing my hypo naturally... I feel better eating yogurt as it helps me meet my daily protein quota on top of meat. Aged or smoked meats (deli, smoked fish,.etc) also not good. Avoid foods high in oxalates, salicylates and histamines.

goat milk kefir okay but not milk or cheeses, esp aged are bad
Getting a lot of confusion over SOY. New studies are shifting towards safe consumption of soy.
avoid soy!
Honestly, I did a food sensitivity test and it showed that I wasn’t sensitive to soy at all. I think if you consume in small amounts, it’s okay. Just try to avoid it as much as you can.
What about without a thyroid?
What is hashimotos?
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis happens when you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). Hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease) is when you have an overactive thyroid instead.

I have no issues with restricting calories i usually dont eat enough but i do crave meat often which i dont understand and ive joined Weight watchers but when i tried american fruits and veggies it made my IBS really bad and i had to stop so im sticking with what does agree with my stomach and adding more protein and ive tried IF and Keto and didnt lose a pound and felt awful and felt nutrient deprived with my IBS i cant eat Nuts or cruciferous vegetables and i only I use Avocado oil for cooking and white rice is great for me and my stomach feels great i usually mix some rice if im going to have a salad
