Spectacular review, thank you! Actually prefer the dial of Reduced between the two, it's a very elegant watch indeed. I think the fact it's hated (by some ignorant folks) tells more about the haters than the watch.

You have the best introduction & music. My 1999 Moon Watch Speedmaster Professional is a favorite and got a ton of wrist time when I was on the job. It recently returned from authorized service with new Hesalite acrylic crystal, pins, hands, crown, washers etc. it looks like it did in 1999. It’s a Classic for sure.

Nice review and comparison of the two Omegas. Perhaps Omega should have named the Speedmaster Reduced “Speedmaster 38” it sounds much nicer.
One item I wish to point out is that although the Speedmaster reduced is automatic it can operate in space, just look at Fortis, where their Cosmonauts timepieces are versions with automatic movements and they work perfectly in outer space.

The first watch actually worn on the moon was worn by Buzz, Neil left his in the LM. Buzz "lost" his so the only actual lunar surface watches on display are from Apollo 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. Also unless you get a 321 calibre you aren't wearing the exact model worn on the moon but close enough is good enough!

Unless wrist size is an issue just get the pro. You’re going to anyway. Also hesalite just looks better, dial color and crystal shape, as you excellently pointed out.

  • @carlosguilhermesilveiraped5017

Great video, as are all your videos. One thing about the reduced is that the original steel bracelet has hollow links and there are tiny little slits in each link (where the metal is "folded') and those slits catch your arm hairs, constantly pinching them. That makes for a somewhat uncomfortable wear. Unfortunately you did not show the original bracelet of the reduced model.

As of 2021 Omega has several "reduced" Speedmasters available (20 models in the catalogue). Ref. 324.30.38.50.01.001 is pretty similar in looks to the ones shown on the video, although it is a co-axial chronometer movement (all the new 38 mm seem to be). But it is a "reduced" Speedmaster...

After lots of NASA astronauts' feedback, Omega should know the Tachymètre bezel should be replaced by a 60 minutes bezel, or at least have the 60 minutes bezel as an option instead of all the goodies in the shoesize box ! You can't take anything away from a reduced version as it is also a pure Speedster, well that's what it says on the dial...The Professional model (I'm the owner of one myself) has a better dial configuration, in my opinion. On the reduced version the sub dials are too far apart in my humble opinion. I was in the market for a reduced as I have a 6.75 inch wrist and i saw both in person, but once I had the professional on, the battle was over for me. One thing is true, I would prefer the Professional to be around 40mm wide and lug2lug width 46mm.

I love the review, but gotta correct something: sapphires and rubies are varieties of corundum, which is a crystalline form of aluminium oxide. So they have nothing to do with diamonds, which are a solid form of carbon. Synthetic rubies have been around for a long time. I suppose the vast majority of watches contain synthetic rubies. Someone can correct me on that one, I'm not knowledgeable at all when it comes to watchmakers' material sourcing.

BEWARE, OMEGA PRODUCTION ERROR - All Speedmasters with cal.1861 or cal.1863 movement (manual wound) paired with 5th of a second markers on dial (seconds divided into 5 parts) or paired with 4th of a second markers, and all with cal.3220 movement (automatic) paired with 5th-second markers on dial, have INACCURATE READING of the chronograph hand due to NO FIT between dial-markers of fractions-of-a-second and the movement’s beat-frequency per second. Cal.1861/1863 beat at 6 vibrations per second (6VPS) and require a 3rd or 6th of a second per marker between the seconds; the cal.3220 beats at 8 VPS and require a half or a 4th or 8th of a second between the markers.
This affects Speedmasters with reference no. 311.10.39.30; 311.33.42.30; 311.30.42.30.01; 3590.50; 3572.50 et cetera (if they have 5th of a second markers paired with a 6 BPS movement - cal.1861 or 1863); 311.30.42.30.03 (a 4th of a second per marker); and it affects Speedmasters with ref. no. 3510.50; 3510.12; 3520.50; 2598.80 etc. (if they have 5th of a second markers, i.e. each second divided into 5 fractions of a second, paired with a 6 beats per second movement - cal.3220 or 1151 etc.).
    Incidentally, those with ref. no. 311.32.40.30.01.005; 311.30.42.30.01.004; 311.33.40.30.02.001; percent 311.32.42.30.04.003; 522.30.42.30.04.001 (cal.1861); 311.30.42.30.99.002 (cal.1863); 3876.50.31 (cal.1866) that have a 1/3 of a second per marker (each second divided into 3 parts, i.e. 2 sub-markers between each marker of a full second), are correct.
Even Tudor had the same production error/design flaw, on all their Valj.-based 28,800 BPH (8 BPS) movement equipped Heritage chronographs, having 4 dividers between each full second marker, making it a 5th of a second per marker, with a CHRONO-hand that jerks forward 6 times per second and always miss the first and the third quarter-second-marker). Only now do we see it corrected. And only now have we recently seen Omega NOT cheating in this regard, more than 50 years after they stopped making their 18,000 BPH (5 BPS) movement, cal.321. They even cheated NASA, in the 1960s, equipping the astronauts with a 6 jerks per second chronograph hand over a dial with only 5 fraction-of-a-second markers. How lame and criminal isn’t that ?
Even their so-called 1957 reissue has a 21,600 BPH (6 BPS) movement paired with each second divided into 5 fractions on the dial. Right, a CURRENTLY ONGOING mass sale of factory error/design flaw equipped CRAP, useless for what it is marketed as, a precision instrument for accurate split second timing. Criminal.

Sorry I noticed it was asked before. But perhaps a link to the amazon site where you ordered it if that’s ok. I’d appreciate it!

Great vid. Automatic winding works fine in space though - see Fortis who supply the Russian Cosmonaut's since 1993 with a chronograph to rival the Speedy. their ref. 630.22.141 was the first automatic in space and worked fine using a Lemania 5100 (later Valjoux 7750) movement.

If nothing else, the SpeedMaster Professional (SMP) is more aesthetically balanced.

Yes, i'm wearing it in my video about the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. I show it up close at the start of the video. It's called the sapphire sandwich.
