As a college tackle, I decided to split exceptionally wide and to my surprise I found the DT followed me. He was taught to play outside shoulder of me. Him being a stud tackle really helped me being the smaller guy. This was a revelation to my O-Line coach. We the. Incorporated it. It made counter even more effective
Love the video, I use to run GT only strong too for the same reason center blocking back on a 3 tech is a hard block. I started running it weak and the center would pull to kick out and the guard would block back on the 3 tech. Nothing changes for anyone else. I’ve had success to it.
Good stuff! That's a nice adjustment. Any troubles with your center pulling?
@@CoachMcKie I’ve been able to find kids that would be typically under sized for line (LB type) that could move. Once you teach them not to carry the snap as they move. It’s worked well. I always felt I can help a center in blocking if needed to get away with a kid that might not be your normal lineman type. The ability to pull the center opens a lot of options. Example we run down weak, guard blocks down on the 1/shade center kicks out the end.
The line execution in that first play 💯
That’s a long pull for the OT with those wide splits. Ever consider having the OTs base block the DEs and pull the backside guard only?
I LOVE wide splits. I coach a youth football team, we have wide splits, and I practically insert a Guard in the A Gaps if the defense is lined up there. We motion in an H Back to the A Gap as another OL if they stack the A Gaps. Blocking angles are so much easier for an OL with wide splits. You don’t have to move defenders to create holes, you simply cut them off. And it helps to neutralize stud DEs.
Lee County, NC runs this type of offense. They have a pretty darn good rb as well.
Hi Coach, do you have any more info on wide splits. What happens if they have double a gaps vs. wide splits?
I ran your Opposite with my Power and IZ and it worked way more often than I thought it would. Added a QB boot fake out of that which worked to hold backside. Best part never ran an actual boot play
Heck yeah. Get great at two runs = more yards.
Wide splits to me is the best overall technique
Coach McKie becoming more and more like a spread wing-t with Air Raid mentality. Makes for a dangerous combination.
You shut your mouth. Don’t you put that on me Rickey Bobby. Haha
@@CoachMcKie with that counter concept, put a wing in and run XX (criss-cross). It would be like that Triple Option concept that the Bears ran last year if you really want to put players out of position.
wish my dolphins would do this
QB counter would be a great addition to your run game.
Heck yeah man. I know you live off that stuff.
@@CoachMcKie definitely, window dress as many ways as possible
That flip action or Jet away and then work downhill for the QB works well. We've added a wrinkle and haven't been able to test ours yet due to Covid-19 Protocols but we are thinking of running the PS#1 off on a Fade and BS#1 having a Slant. If the QB keeps his eyes up we want him to trigger it based on what he sees. Just haven't had the chance yet to test it
Hey Coach. Thanks again for the video. 2 questions... 1) vs a even front when you double the 3T does the G or T go the the backside LB? 2) How would you block vs a 5 man front? Thanks!
I have a memory of a Vikings game during the Mewelde Moore era, primetime game, and their run game had been trash in that season and John Madden starts going off about how their splits were too tight to be able to run, no space to create a hole. Later in the game they started to split a little wider and suddenly they could run a bit again
A gap blitz= Guard blocks down
Great Job getting skinny through the hole by the RB. Very hard for the Defender to pick him out of a lineup like that
Yes sir. THe RB we had was a special kid.
You have outs by your slots. Is that a to set up RPO or a run off block? Because it would be easy to have the slot block any overhang player, plus if you have receivers who attack defenders, I mean close on them fast and with purpose to make blocks, when they come off the ball to run a route the defense sees the same movement from your receivers regardless of closing on a block or stemming on routes.
If you're a team that releases the TB a lot, I would align him more towards the OT. Then you don't have to worry about delaying him. He can take the handoff at full speed. It requires a plant and cut, but that's why he's the TB.
That's true and we tried it. Our TB didn't like it that much. Preferred the jab step more. Or just a slight pause before going. So I let him do it that way.
@@CoachMcKie What about aiming behind the QB so he can come a little more downhill?
We usually have the RB "Show Hands" when we run it without the Jet Action to the BS. We tell the RB to open his hands like he is getting a Toss, that usually will bring an aggressive Safety and or DE who will jump that action.
Great coaching point coach!
Counter and Speed Option is all I do.
I love it. Had a lot of success with it?
Wide splits will be great norm in ten years
You can get on the trend now then. Hah.
Whats your "IF" when they shoot the gaps and blitz the house
Though the ball or run some kind of jet
@@CoachMcKie If they shoot gaps. The "if" would be run zone or as the air raid calls run the 30 its a draw
Do you generally get defenses with no DE ?
Do you have issues with team shooting gaps with your wide splits?
Let them shoot gaps and run a slip screen
Afternoon Coach - Appreciate the study film as always. Working on studying up to become an OC soon/one day myself; so I had a question: did you only have 2 running plays because of corona, or is that normal for you, and your staff, as an Air Raid attacking scheme? Thanks.
Hey Coach, this is late but i have heard him along with many air raid coaches speak about how they have counter/ zone. Not too many run plays
@@Ryan-fn2zr appreciate it
Coach, did you get a chance to run it with a H-back and Tight end on the line?
Not this year. I've done it like that in previous years.
@@CoachMcKie Were you able to run pop passes when they blitz the A -gap using the tightend or H-back?
Seem like the H-back would be able to slip pass them for a quick dump
Been doing a lot of research. Seems wide splits are the way to go.
Question. Do wide splits take a different level of skill for lineman? Such as speed? Or do the wide splits just create a more beneficial scenario?
No. Go wide. I promise you you will never go back.
You have to really make sure your o line guy can coach up those double teams. Requires different football. Look up “Gallup” footwork to get that tackle down on the 3 tech when he’s on the play side of the counter.
Box defenders are not very comfortable with the all of the space that wide splits give you
Why do spread coaches call running back counter when there is no counter? In most offenses that is power trap. There is no hard movement to one side and break back. They are just coming straight to the hole. It is not a counter. A counter would be if you bring a jet sweep and have the QB ride that out two steps and then pull and runs the ball the opposite direction to the play side.
Im an o line coach. And I disagree. Respectfully. If I was a defensive coach. I would crush you. Check with who? Back side D. Would devour your team. Tape is crazy. Your offense is cool but split is to wide. You better have a smart qb if you're going to vegas this!
Im not sure where you are. I. Just wondering. 5-2 defense kills this especially while you have a weak backside.
You better have a great not good. Qb.
Please reply if possible. Schumpertjoe@yahoo.com I would love to here about this.
That's okay coach. These splits have worked for Air Raid coaches and flexbone coaches. We can agree to disagree.
