- Auto Alex invites DadCars to review his B5 Audi S4. The start of his trading up series to get a 993. Is this the greatest Q DadCar you can buy for sub £5000? We take it for a drive with my baby and have a fascinating conversation.
If you don't do so already, subscriber to @AutoalexCars and @Autoalexv2
Huge thank you to Alex for inviting us up to film this video.

I love the way alex is always letting us know about smaller youtubers who deserve our attention. Great video guys.
Thank you 🙏 yes it’s rather mind blowing he is so generous, what a guy 🥲
Alex is an absolute legend, such an awesome down to earth guy
I can confirm that he doesn’t change even slightly when the cameras are rolling or not 👏
@dadcars you and Geoff from Geoffbuyscars would also be awesome on a video together I reckon

@dadcars yes 🙂
And has lots of family cars on his channel, check him out 🙂

2 blokes talking about cars and life in general. An absolutely amazing colab love this!
Glad you enjoyed it! This was such a fun day
I really enjoyed that! Alex as a yet to be dad, you as a mega Dad and me watching it as a dad with a grown up only son... I could still relate. My first Dad car was a 1998 Mondeo ST24... THEN a 350Z 😂
👏 that’s the advantage of having one child… two seaters are DadCar options!
I had my B5 S4 for 5 years. Stage 3 APR 420BHP stunning Cactus Green in Immaculate condition I loved it! A seriously fast car a true sleeper. Now would I recommend this as a daily? No… they are now at the age most parts are NLA at the dealer networks. Repair costs are very very high. Anything needing fixed even simple stuff eg - alternator the front end needs to come off inc bumper etc. Turbos are prone to failure even if you change them to K04 units and have them rebuilt any boost leaks they get stressed and fail. These are in my opinion now weekend cars. Keep them for special occasions.
Feel like everyone has forgotten how brutal they are to own.
That’s fascinating to hear, I start feeling old when I realise cars that seem fairly modern to me are 20 years old 🙈
Ben you have definitely filled a gap in the market! You and Alex are both legends!
I have a f10 530d which will be a great dad car but the only drawback is the exhaust. I would have gone for the m5 but the fuel consumption would destroy me. Good luck with m5 excited for that for sure.
Alex is definitely a legend, I hope to be one day 😅… F10 M5 has been on my watch list 😝
Love this both. You guys are great and both humble despite the success. Great videos keep them coming
Thanks man! How cool is Alex, crazy busy yet found the time to do this 🥹
@dadcars Totally love what Alex does as well as yourself. Keep it up 👍
Absolutely love @AutoalexCars, Alex is such an amazing guy.... super chat between you both and a great insight into your lifes.... PS You have a new sub. Take Care & Love to all
PS Happy Fathers Day!
🙏 I’m so glad people are enjoying it! As a fan first this was a wonderful thing to do 😊 welcome to the DadCars channel!!
These are good numbers Ben. Great video, Well done.
Thanks! Yes hopefully one day I’ll be getting these numbers on my videos every week 😅
I had one for over ten years. Spent a shed load on it when I first got it. Then over the years spent a shed load more as I drove like they should be driven. Front wings rotted out, boot handle and lower lip rotted and lacquer peel kicked in. Loads of great memories and it rarely got beaten around country roads. Did regret selling it but don’t miss the running costs. As others have stated these are now more of a week end car. Parts are expensive, no jobs are small as you pretty much have to remove the front end every time you need to carry out routine maintenance. Brakes were always poor for such a heavy quick car. All said no regrets and always made me smile.
Yeah it’s really interesting hearing owner’s experiences with these 🙌
knocking it out of the park with Alex - nice to have a bit of 'real' chat :)
We had no real plan for this as came together last minute but what an awesome conversation 🙌
Enjoyed that, subbed ya, and these days Alex a 40 year old dad is not old, go for it, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do
Yep these days people have children older on average 👍
Just came across your channel through Alex's channel. Both down to earth lads and enjoyable, entertaining content. Cars and kids . What's not to love. Great beard too 👌🏻 haha . Gonna check out more of your content now!
Awesome glad you found the channel! What I lack in hair on my head I make up for with the beard 😅
@@dadcars 🤣 I shaved my head as it's too hot here in Spain and I like It now haha
With cars like this, you can often purchase the ISOFIX bars and retrofit them. My B5.5 Passats, that would be of a similar vintage, the bolt holes for the ISOFIX bars were pre-drilled, so it was just a case of buying the bars, and bolting them in. So even that isn't a deal breaker. Probably.
Yeah I did mentioned thinking that was the case 👏
Being a 40 year old dad is ok till there 20 and your in your 60' ! I'm 43 now and my dads 82 its shocking and he was always so old he didn't really end up being much of a dad i just remembered him coming home from work then him falling asleep.
Brilliant channel 👍🏼 nice to hear the back and forth between you both discussing your CZcams journeys was an amazing insight
A CZcamsr at the start of his journey and a certified superstar… what a cool thing to do! How awesome is Alex! 🙌
A really good video with Autoalex. My left field suggestion for a cheap dad car is an OG Saab 9-5 Aero estate. 250 bhp as stock and easily mapped for more power. Safe as houses, as they were one of the first cars to get a 5 star NCAP rating. Bags of space, quick and quiet. I had two of these in the saloon version back in the day when I had my two children. Even more of a Q car than the Audi.
Absolutely! I did a review on a Saab, check it out! It was a really fun one with my two eldest 😅
@@dadcars Just checked it out - fantastic cars for the money and very underrated. 15 years on, however, my driving needs have changed and no longer need a big car, (I previously owned an Alfa 159 ti sportwagon) so now own a little Honda CR-Z coupe. Neither quick nor powerful, it is nonetheless nippy around town and is highly entertaining to drive on a good B road, due to its good road handling. Add into the mix that I pay £25 a year road tax, only pay for group 17 insurance and get 50mpg average makes for a happy wallet.
That NCAP is decades old 😂 For todays standards its safety is abyssmal.
I am still crying I sold mine...2004- 9-5 2.3 TS Aero Estate...Stock, only bilsteins B6 and absolutely no rust (I'm from Spain)
Man I was happy with that horse...
@@miskatonic6210we really should be up to 10 stars now or something 2002 cars were 5 stars and they aren't safe by modern standards.
As an idiot that owns multiple B5 S4s, I’m so happy to see a positive take on them. If they are left stock or even mildly modified, they can be super reliable..as long as they are properly looked after. People complain constantly about the reliability of these after they’ve thrown the entire book of eBay mods and act like the car is at fault when it’s constantly breaking. My car has been in the family since new, has always been meticulously cared for, and now has 156,000 miles on the original engine and 01-e manual transmission and they’ve never been opened up. The car has been chipped since 40k miles, stage 3 k04 turbos and supporting mods since 100,000, and now even further beyond on hybrid TTE turbos and E85 with 500whp. It’s a little temperamental these days but with almost 3x the power at the engine than it left the factory with, I can’t say it’s unexpected.
Sounds like you have a peach of a car there 🙌
New to dadcars (autoalex subscriber) and a new dad so will enjoy this channel greatly. I have an Octavia VRS estate and an Integra Type R, both great for little ones! Just need some AC in the Honda…
Awesome lineup! 🙌 welcome to the channel, glad you found us!

Your chat in the car made me subscribe - cracking work to both of you! 🚗
Awesome! Glad you found us! 😎
Excellent choice. Best Dad car I've ever had was a 2005 (55) Subaru Legacy 3.0 H6 Spec. B estate. Absolutely loved it, and was a bit left field when all the other dads at the time were buying A4 Avants and Volvo V70s.
I was talking about a Legacy very recently in a video I filmed, saying how they’ve always been cool to me and I want to try one 🙌
Just came from Alex’s community post,
Delighted I’ve found this channel!
I was the same buying my last project car, leather seats iso fix and buggy space etc trying to be a bit dadspec

Congratulations Ben on your best performing video so far!
Thank you 🙏 🙌 and big thanks to Alex!
Quality chat - effortless back and forth between two petrolheads. Lovely vid and great to hear more of Alex’s story too.
Awesome motor as well - definitely on the list for the future. Think Chris Harris used to run one a chipped one of these as his snotter and have loved them since then.
Yeah this was a blast, oh I didn’t know Chris Harris had one… I can see it though, very cool and completely understated
I think he bought it for his late mum
Great video Ben! As a relatively newly married man and new father myself I really enjoyed the conversation you guys had. Very easy to watch.
Back to cars - your budget would get you in a very good example B7 RS4 Avant. Might not be the most exotic but perhaps a decent video opportunity?
Keep up the great content. 👍
Welcome to the channel! Yeah I’d like to try one of those, my guess is the M5 will be more me but won’t know until I try 😎
New to your channel and loving the chat with @AutoAlex, great in car interview with him! Will have a look through your video history and try and play catch up with some other vids! Just as a complete curveball and as a dad of two young children myself I can highly recommend the Vectra VXR estate, with only 1001 Vectra VXR’s in total ever made the estates are a rare car now. 255bhp in the early ones and 280bhp in the last of the run, easily mapped to around 320bhp, awesome Recaro interior and with the back seats down more space than you’ll ever going to need! 😎 AND it has IsoFix in the rear 😂
Glad you found us! Lots of cool cars I’ve featured. Your car Sounds awesome! So many cool estates for me to feature, I’ll get round to them all eventually!

One issue could be the expensive insurance and running costs, including the road tax and mpg. An alternative would be the Octavia VRS estate remapped diesel
Would you believe it, 9 months of DadCar reviews and this is the first estate I’ve featured 🤷♂️ need to get more on for sure

It’s a car that proves there’s no excuse for boring 🫡
My 1999 B5 S4 has now covered 303k miles and will remain my everyday car for many years to come. Audi built;d quality from this era is immense.
That’s impressive! Very environmentally friendly having a car that lasts so long 🙌

Live in Wisconsin. The one ride my daughter loves me taking is my 04' Passat 1.8T 5-Speed Wagon (estate). I've been working on it the last couple of years. Last car show I got 3rd place between 98' - 05' against gti's & such. As my daughter is now a teen, I have a 2000 watt RMS system (orion xtr 750 4 channel to the components & CT-SOUNDS 1000.1D monoblock to my 10in 2dvc tropo wired to 1ohm). Much easier to keep up maintenance than the V6s. Great sleeper. I've named it "The Granny Sleeper." I've taken good care of it before, and once I owned it as it was a family car as my X father n law is a toyota dealer.
Sounds like a cool car 👌 it’s all about something that makes you smile and not just buying a boring modern thing because you think that’s the sensible thing 👏
@dadcars Indeed, I am a kid at heart and always loved turbo's, but I wanted to get something for the family and was fun. Been very careful as to the modifications I do as I'm looking at long gevity rather than a drag car. Hit the jackpot as these 04's have a great amount of sound deadening. My daughter's first movie in a car, Twister. Hehe. She loved it....

@@dadcars i should really, it is a bit of a shed. 155k miles and all the supermarket dings :D ... if i did have the cash i'd love to do some proper work on it, the engine is similar to the mk2 focus ST so capable of big power... im sure there will be some out there you can feature
I had one of these, when the kids were small, had it mapped etc. But honestly, my mapped Golf TDI 150 Mk 4 was a better family car. Never went wrong , 50 plus mpg .
Wish I never sold it.

Was having a father's day chat this morning with my dad about my weekend car which is a 1980 series 3 landy, and said a similar thing to you, as its an old car the kids only go in it locally, mainly the slower roads and the furthest they go in it is devil's pit 4x4 centre 25 minutes so the risks are minimal. Rest of the time they ride in our newer landy which has all the safety features.

What’s going on with the mirrors on the drive?
5000? Well, in Germany vou would have 10.000 left over to spend on servicing it, tuning it and repaint it since you look at 15.000 to get the cheapest running one here.

I did have to laugh, because of course any car Alex offers up will be something of the typical sh*tbox, but actually, £3k for the car, another £2k getting it tidied, and that is a damn good Dad Car for not a lot of money. It made me think of the Saab video; not the flashiest of cars, but as a cheap, fun family mover it probably is a great choice. I like how Ben doesn't give a rating, because how do you decide what is the 'best' Dad Car? So I like more subjective 'this bit is great, that bit isn't so great but you could still live with it'.
Ben certainly is rubbing shoulders with some big names; mates with JayEm, getting AutoAlex on the channel, what's next? The DadB9 on CarWow or popping back to the US to hang out with the CarTrek boys...?
