I can understand both of them. Max is upset because he misses Roxanne and does not want to be treated like a child anymore while Goofy is heartbroken because he wanted to bond with Max and fears that he'll end up in "the electric chair". Sometimes, these arguments remind me of my parents treating me like a kid, even at the age of 19. I can tell ya, all the arguments, all the pressure and all the frustration are somehow represented in this scene.

I'm only seventeen, yet I can relate to both Goofy and Max. And neither is right or wrong. On Goofy's side, you can tell that he loves his son with all his heart and tries at all cost not to have Max at "the electric chair". But it's clear he is stuck with his normal personality of being...well Goofy, and the fact that he gets stuck in the past from time to time. On Max side, trying to be the cool kid in school and trying to impress Roxanne is something every boy or girl always wants, and that is always a great feeling. But being that they are so young and so passionate at what they want to do, whenever anything unusual happens that screws up the plan, especially when a family member is part of it, obvoiusly they would get pissed off.
That is a key factor to why I love this movie.

He’s trying to make a good impression on the one girl he likes, but instead is being dragged across the country by his goof of a father to things like “rat shows” LOL! It is kinda humiliating.
But at the same time, I completely see Goofy’s side of the situation too. He was only trying to bond with Max and repair his somewhat broken relationship with him. In Goofy’s mind, THIS was his way of trying to patching things up with his son. But unfortunately, he failed to realize at the time that some of these adventures did not interest Max nor match his personality.

I love how Max is so angry at Goofy that when he tries to throw his hat out of the car, he doesn’t realise that the car window is up, so then he begins to roll the window down in another attempt to throw his hat out of the car while he continues to rant in front at Goofy.
Hats off to the animators for that little subtle comedic moment during this sad scene. 😂

    Mickey: Max, calm down!
    Max: I AM CALM!!
    Daisy: No you're not!
Donald: Why won't you give what your dad loves a chance, you ungrateful brat?!
    Mickey: Donald, you're not helping!
Max: You two shut up and stay out of this!!!
Mickey: I know how you're upset at your dad for what you think he did to you was humiliating, but that's no reason to--
Max: You don't know what it's like to have your plans ruined by YOUR dad!!!
Mickey: You hurt his feelings, Max!
    Max: (turns away) Hmph!
    (Mickey frowns.)
Mickey: Alright. This is pointless, I guess.
(Mickey leaves for his own car, where Pluto is waiting for him, and its roof is pulled up.)
Huey: Well, well, well, Maxie. Now we're sorry to be a bother, but we found your opossum dance very hilarious.
Louie: "Look at me! I'm Max, and I love to dance with opossums!"
    Dewey: Ha ha ha!
(Donald's nephews dance. Daisy calls from the van she and Donald are riding in.)
Daisy: Boys! Leave Goofy's son alone!
    Donald: Cut it out, boys!
Huey: We're just having a little fun with Max, Uncle Donald.
    Donald: Come on, boys!
(Donald escorts his nephews to their van. Only Minnie remains with Goofy and Max.)
Minnie: Max, I realize you're very upset. But you have to learn to be more open to your dad's plans and respect what he used to love as a child. Also, there are a few anger management issues we need to discuss.
Max: I wouldn't give my dad a chance at what he loves IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!!!!
Minnie: You see, that's just what I'm talking about.
(Mickey honks his car horn to grab her attention.)
    Mickey: Minnie, come on!
Minnie: I have to go, Maxie. Remember what I said.

My own dad was a lumberjack, Vietnam veteran, and commercial fisherman. A bear of a man. Compassionate. Wise. But also hurt, wounded. And he had his mean self-centered moments- more so when drinking or in one of his restless cabin fever moods, only ever verbally. But my friend Caleb, who I’ve known from preschool, once got slammed to the pavement and kicked in the side by his own dad, who seemed like such a chill and friendly guy. It was just that one time, but damn, it hurt Caleb’s spirit more than his jaw and ribs. Never forgave his dad for that.
I remember having a dream where Max had snapped at Goofy like in this scene. I took him aside and slapped him right across the face. I told him that’s what his father should have done, what my father would have done, and most definitely what Max’s mother would have done if she heard him speak to Goofy like that.
I’ve had many deep and realistic dreams.

I can relate to Max in a way when my dad used to plan family trips before his passing. Obviously we knew very well he wanted to spend time as a family, but the problem was that he often had this controlling-like behavior regarding how we spent it. The last trip we went on before his accident didn't really feel like a vacation. He literally booked the trip at the last minute without giving us a heads up and never told us anything about the town and the hotel we were staying at. He practically controlled where we were gonna go sightsee and never allowed us to take long walks within the town. I didn't get to go inside certain gift shops because of it.

Max had every right to be angry at his father.
Goofy has VERY poor parenting skills in wanting to bond with his own son, despite being well-meaning about wanting what's best for Max, but he is in complete denial that Max is no longer a 5-year-old little boy, but a grown teenager, and treating your own grownup child with public smothering and babying in front of total strangers is a sign of toxic parenting and quite possibly narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), which shows how psychologically immature Goofy is.
Max was forcefully dragged into a vacation the moment he got home from school after being let out for the summer that he was given absolutely no say in based on a misunderstood phone call Goofy received from the principal of Max's high school where he lied about Max causing havoc and threatened to give his son the death sentence if he didn't do anything about Max's so-called "behavior," which Goofy naively fell for hook, line, and sinker without an iota of hesitation. And Goofy never even had an iota of sense in him to actually talk to Max instead about his phone call with the principal to begin with, nor even asked to hear Max's side of the story about Mazur's wrongful accusations either.
So, if Goofy and Max indeed sat down and talked about it with Max giving him all the facts, then Goofy would have at least the decent mind to call the police about Mazur threatening to give Max the death sentence for a crime he didn't commit. Because a school principal (or any other educator) threatening a parent about their children being given the death sentence is a SERIOUS no-no and will not only get them arrested, but fired from their jobs and their teaching certificates revoked.

Goofy was obviously hurt that his son was angry, although Max had every right to as Goofy humiliated him in front of the other guests & taking Max on holiday against his will, especially as he had a date with Roxanne.
Then later in the film the tables are turned as Goofy gets mad at Max for deceiving him & changing the route on the map as well as thinking that Mazur & Pete were right about Max being a 'delquient'.

    • @rachet87
      @rachet87 Před 5 měsíci +3

Goofy brought it onto himself. None of this would have happened if Goofy had communicated and listened to Max instead of assuming things. It was Goofy taking words of Mazur and Pete literally about Max being a delinquent was the problem, he never talks things out with Max or demand explanation about what happened and just makes decisions behind his back. He only made everything worse and Max not being honest was also a result of that.
