Luke gotta be thinking “i would headkick the shit out of this guy”
Ik he thought that was he got shucked and shoved back bad at the end
oh, that beutiful roundhouse kick to costa in his last match…
You mean tornado kick?
@@kagomehigurashi693 factsss
Or get koed by another Wrestler and lose another few thousand brain cells permanently
Rockhold is just one of the best athletes i've ever seen. Now he is gone we all will miss him. Prime Rockhold... Damn... Probably one of the greatest 185ers.
In his prime he could win against anyone any position
As far as I know he doesn't have a physic of someone in performance enhancing drugs if he's never taken any that's pretty impressive.
Crazy how he made 185. Dude is huge.
@@samdaman916 A lot of dudes on the sauce don't look like a Greek Adonis.
@@dustinsmith4068 yeah that's why I I don't know just if he isn't that's pretty impressive.
Honestly this is pretty silly. Within the first 2 minutes the match got stopped at least six times because they kept going out of bounds. In freestyle wrestling, you force the wrestlers to stay inbound by having push out points, but here there's no motivation to actually circle and try to stay inbounds. It's pretty unwatchable. BJJ really needs to update rulesets to be more spectator friendly.
It's the closest thing to a real fight with out striking. It's a legit strategy in bjj and a real fight. If you go out off bounds on purpose you get fouled tho.
They don’t even stop the timer as they slowly walk back to the middle. Wtf at least 4 minutes worth of time gone just by that
@@rileyjohnporter4274 No, you dont reset in a rela fight, and in mma its a Cage so you dont reset either. Thb the constant resets r bad for spectators
@@rileyjohnporter4274 so you say this is a strategy but you say that you can loose point if you do it on purpose which doesn’t make anysense cause if it’s a strategy, it’s not supposed to make you loose point.
And since when going out of bounds is a streategy in a "real fight" ? There is no bounds in a real fight dude.
This rule is just stupid, they need to add this wrestling restriction.
@@rileyjohnporter4274 restarts suck plain and simple and this many sucks bad.
Gordon is absolutely right saying that most competitors are just boring as hell.
@@zeynand4039 i thought rod was usually one of the more offensive bjj guys mainly because his wrestling has he switched it up?
@@qhoward5328 No he is not. He is a point fighter. Good takedowns but usually wins on points, hes not a submission hunter
@@patl4933 he’s only training jiu jitsu for a few years. He‘ll get there for sure.
@@overbeatzme6 years is simply isnt just few years. Been 4 years since his first ADCC and still couldn't pull a submission. His lil brother is actually more entertaining than him, looking for submission
Gordon is the most boring fighter, made worse by the fact that he demands no time limit.
That last look at them shirtless with the referee between them shows the clear size advantage that Nicky Rod had over Luke. Just a testament to how insanely athletic and gifted Luke is that he can absorb those snaps and charges and just keep coming.
Juice-Jitsu
i mean, luke spars and trains with the best wrestlers in the world, he is stronger than nicky. it's just facts.
@@elvisrodriguez9351 believe. Receive. Achieve.
Nick ROID is why, he could never compete clean 😂
Luke Rockhold is not a small guy and he's really strong. Even in mma, you didn't really see many guys overpower him, it was more that he would have mental lapses in fights and his opponents would capitalize on it.
Even though Luke fell short in this, it's still impressive that he was competitive against someone of Nicky Rod's caliber in _his_ area of expertise.
Nicky rod was a purple belt here, he's been doing BJJ for the quarter of time Luke has and Luke has been wrestling a lot longer. He started training BJJ less than 2 yrs before this lol Not much can't be done when a guy just wants to disengage and stall either....I get UFC fans don't understand grappling, but what we saw was Rockhold basically getting tech'd. This is why a lot of MMA guys, look at the UFC, are still getting dominated by guys who started out as wrestlers, the reason being that most gyms are just training guys in basic wrestling a few times a week.
Lol what??? Luke has been doing jits way longer than Nicky
@@kevinwilliams8375 That's true. However, Nicky has been doing this sport exclusively, without splitting any training time in to other areas like is done in MMA. Nicky is a specialist in this specific area of unarmed combat, who has competed and placed highly in numerous ADCC competitions. This would be the equivalent of a great MMA boxer competing against a great professional boxer in the sport of boxing.
@LearningWithSuj exactly if calvin kattar barley lost to like luke Campbell in a boxing match that would be crazy asf.
lol rockhold legit did nothing but defend
That bridge from mount by Rockhold was excellent
Could they make that mat any smaller??
Yes
Lol. Ikr
It’s not that small….
The mats huge compared to most.
Way smaller
It's hilarious see that Nicky Rodriguez isn't massively impressive when faced with someone roughly his own size. He seemed scared to engage Luke on the ground.
To be fair he’s beaten bigger guys in ADCC like Orlando Sanchez and Cyborg
@@edmonddantes563 sanchez is 5'7
Luke is a black belt
@@mcjohnson31 5'7 500lbs
@@edmonddantes563 also muhammad ali too
Luke is a tough guy. He has great strength and fortitude.
Testicular fortitude? Or just regular old fashion fortitude?
@@josiffexplosiff1 🤣🤣
AGREED.
Strength and Fortitude and Believeing and achieving
Fuckin samurai
Nick obviously won, but I still feel the real winner is Rockhold
Always a pleasure to see Rockhold compete, dudes a beast in any competition 💯👌🏿✨
he did nothing but try to survive being sub
@@keenanvanzilelmao you don’t even know what your watching. Also this is Nickys profession not Rockolds and he’s also the smaller guy and still held his own.
damn that was impressive by luke. i knew his grappling was good though. the right match ups for him can be really entertaining in this sport.
This sport needs Luke "The Legend" Rockhold. He makes it fun to watch because he is such a down to earth dude
just call him Mister Ralph Lauren
That mat is too small, they keep going out of bounds..and they don't stop the time when they bring them back, so half the match they're just going back to the middle
The more I see of Nick Rod, the less I am impressed.
His strong wrestling base and athleticism carries him so hard.
i feel like i rarely see him doing good bjj
@@kashura38 He just got silver at adcc tho haha
@@thomasburchfiel120 yea but if he was any other weight class he probably wouldn’t the heavy weights are way less technical and athleticism matters way more cuz of it
@@thomasburchfiel120 With... 0 submissions? Yeah...
@@thomasburchfiel120 it was mostly stand up, much like this match. We hardly get to see bjj
Nicky Rod is the kind of guy you avoid at the gym lol
Those are the ones i always go for after you whoop em you get some good satisfaction out of it
@@TheGarlicfather he's the type where when you land a good strike in sparring he turns it into a fight lol
@@TheGarlicfather Yea sure you do... Nicky would whoop you with his eyes closed 🤣

Watching this after the Costa fight makes me appreciate Luke so much more..what a legend and skilled fighter
Does anyone actually enjoy these two just pushing each other. I almost thought it was a Sumo match.
no i don't it's like sumo wrestling
@@larrybardwell8461 Yeah…. ummm, exactly what I said.
How he got out of that full mount is just mind blowing. From a guy a lot stronger and bigger than him
Prob had Cain and DC do that same shit to him over the years
@@thatdarnmage1515 fair point
STRONGER AND BIGGER ???
Imagine Rockhold start punching and doing the knee to the face. Sorry man... for a moment, I thought I was in a UFC fight... 😅😅😅
Crazy how Luke can hold his own vs Nicky. If Luke went 100% BJJ he could be one of the greats!
*could have been* Luke is wayyy too old to improve his game that much to become one of the greats.
@@GaryCooper12 Already a UFC CHAMP
Way more prestige by being a ufc champ
How tempting it must be for him to just blast one right up the middle.
Rockhold ain’t worried bout nothin or no one.
nick just another bjj juicer… props to luke
Nicky has a massive physical advantage due to age difference and juice...and still couldnt get anything going.
He had a massive experience disadvantage though
Prime age for bjj should be 35-40
Why do you people think everyone with an above average body is on roids 😂
@@mohammedamer934 I mean Nicky is more than likely on the sauce now come on
@@mohammedamer934 Casual
The reset position was incorrect. There was a cross face with the right arm, not an underhook on the left arm.
The size and age diff is massive. Nicky looked afraid to take it down to the ground unless he was guaranteed the back.
It's comical how untechnically successful nicky rod is.
Rod should move to MMA. He's way too emotional and unstable for jiu jitsu. He's not technical or skillful - he's just a brute relying on brute strength who picked up some great techniques introduced by wise people.
@@edweaver2750 the fact that he still pretty successful shows how low the level of athlete really is in JJ. Better than it was, but not by much.
If he’s having success then he has technique
He relies on the juice a bit too much
Rod couldn't actually submit Luke despite the fact that JJ is his primary sport. He clearly had the size advantage and is clearly on the juice. Even in full mount he couldn't finish him.
This should've been a tie
It's really cool to see an elite MMA fighter do a great job against an elite no jiujitsu fighter, also ADCC finalist. It shows you how well rounded are MMA fighters.
On the street ROCKHOLD ALL DAY
i cant stop but think whenever an mma fighter boxes a boxer or grapplers a grappler, "what if he stops and just headkicks the shit out of them midfight as a reality check?" lol
You gotta respect Luke 's body of work and his competitivenes to continue.
Newport Wales, damn. Missed this and I'm only in Gloucester!!
If Luke wants to keep competing, this is where he should be not mma. He's obviously a world class grappler. Would be awesome to see him in ADCC
You don't earn money in grappling buddy....
@@62Tob gordon says hi
he's also a world class striker, just too arrogant when he's fighting power punchers
God I wanted to see that go no time limit so much that match ramped up to such an awesome level of action!
What a match enjoyed this more then many ufc fights .
Go luke! Never seen this side of him.
wish we got more jits and less wrestling, but props to rockhold for bringing it
would be so much better and maintain more flow if there was a side to the cage similar to ufc, onefc etc.. where the athletes could continue to work
Love seeing Luke compete
Pure athleticism and technique alone is what allowed Luke to hang with Nicky. People often forget how good Luke's grappling was. I honestly feel that he needed better coaching and fight team to utilize his talents. His move to Blackzilians/Sanford really hindered his career.
Leaving AKA was a mistake for sure
Nicky rod survives against Luke purely due to athleticism and gear.
Athleticism and technique is all there is
Nice shot by Nicky Rod @ 18:26. Way to take advantage off Rockhold's frustration!
Man, I'm a massive fan of UFC and MMA, never watched a single grappling match, and this was insanely entertaining.
If you think watching it's fun, give it a try yourself!
Only problem is it makes everything else in life feel boring in comparison
It was boring. Only guy worth watching is Gordon Ryan.
@@breakdancerQ I hate that I hate BJJ. I love martial art and I wrestled but I simply can't get behind It.
Shows how UFC fighters are just beasts.
Rod living up to the name juiced through the roof!
Great win by headbutt…
Where was the grappling part?
This was great, reminded me of Galvao vs Palhares. Two silverbacks going at it. 💪💪
I’m new to this sport but can someone explain why the mat is the size of a one car garage? It seems like it should be like the size of a basketball court.
its 81 square metres, those are just big men
The commentators have a funny idea of "really bringing it". Why are they so in love with Luke Rockhold?
People can hate on Rockhold wall they want but you cant deny the man is a samurai lol
humility goes a long way, he has to learn that...
I imagine theres a bit of frustration on lukes part knowing if it was a fight it would be like taking candy from a baby ..but sticking to rules that completely keep nicky safe
If anyone ever had any doubts about how rampant steroids are in bjj competition you need only look at Nicky rod
Referee's decision without any real criteria is a horrible way to end any contest. Its possibly the worst part of BJJ
The Polaris rules are online for all to see 😁
@@mattbenyon5356 yes, and those rules don't have any criteria for how the referee is supposed to decide the bout if it is tied at the end of regulation.
I prefer something more decisive. I come from a wrestling background, we have a "sudden death" where we compete until someone scores. Of course, wrestling also has stalling calls that are applied much more vigorously than BJJ. I have seen some BJJ rule-sets where they have an equivalent period at the end of regulation. If tied, each person gets to start in back control, and go for a submission/escape. Then the person with the fastest sub (if both sub) or fastest escape (if both escape) is the winner.
I love BJJ, but its one of the most annoying things about it: the number of contests that don't have a real winner, even though the referee declares one.
Luke is a beast
the announcers don't know how cuts are treated apparently...
Im a DDS/B team fan but Would have been more fair if Nick was also in the USADA pool.
Slap fighting champ Luke has met his match..
Prime Luke was so fun to watch man, what a beast he is
People so quick to judge Nicky rod but he’s made massive strides for really not training that long.. sure he favors his wrestling but with his prior experience and physical attributes what else would you expect
Luke Rockhold !
👍👍👍
Impressed by Luke…
needed a bigger mat! always forget how big rockhold was, walked around at 230?!
Pretty sure Nicky is on some sauce.
You think?
Lmao jui jitsu “Do you wanna watch two grown men push each other for 10 minutes then start rolling then this is the sport for you”
I like Nick but I don’t think anyone would disagree with me that he’s definitely gassed up and strictly a BJJ competitor and nothing more. Luke is less muscled I do believe he’s also a BJJ black belt but it’s not his all in sport. Super impressive to see home compete this well against Nick !
Luke shouldn't have retired. He looked awesome against a top contender and fought at altitude. He looked sharp af imo
That was 21 minutes I’ll never get back.
that camera man FUCKED up at the only moment i wanted to see lmao. Rockhold ESCAPED nicky's mount at 12:20 and we can't see how..........
Big difference, Nicky Rod's probably juiced to the gills, Rockhold isn't.
16:23 even the cameraman fell asleep
Losing 1 point for every time you go outside the Matt area would make things more interesting.
costa's ground game underrated. he toyed with luke. took him down, mounted multiple times and took his back
Luke was also completely gassed 2 mins into the fight and got hurt on the feet… makes a massive difference
@@troncity6693 I hope he does
@@mmainvesting7013 Luke was literally gassed in 2 minutes and paulo still managed to look like a moron 😂😂😂
Nicky Rod is like 90% aggression, 10% skill. He'll never beat Gordon.
Рокхольд молодец, красава👍🔥.
Достойную конкуренцию поставил.
Was this before or after his ufc retirement?
Can someone answer this for me... In this matches can you use wrestling techniques or Judo techniques or does it HAVE to be only BJJ in order to get it to the ground?
but to be fair, props to rockhold for competing vs nicky rod like that
They need to make this sub only.
I would think a mixed martial artist would really struggle to not strike the other guy in a combat competition.
I didn’t know Nicky rod had baby ears 😂😂😂😂😂
Luke Rockhold has got that scary Dad look lol.
one of the most exciting grappling matches I have ever seen
Stalling & passivity rules need to be implemented in grappling
Ain’t nothin I like to see more than Luke Rockhokd eat that good ol humble pie damn
New to BJJ here - They need to change the rules to keep the fight on the mat. It’s very unwatchable all the start and stop and very limited ground work. Award points to circling back inside the mat or something or maybe do it inside a small cage? Just a thought
What has happened to BJJ?
I’m sure this matched pissed Luke off, knowing a 2nd year kid in jiu jitsu had enough grown man strength to slap him around lol
they really need a descending grappling pit just cant do it every venue it would be expensive
Rock is a beast!
Tough to find someone to root for in this match..
Love Luke
Nice
Did they have beef or something???
Nick had to have gone home thinking, "Luke would have beaten the crap outta me!"
Luke always starts out strong then fades out towards the end same when he fights
Is it asking too much to have a little extra mat, so they aren't restarting every 5 seconds
