- I uploaded the Prelude a while back, but someone rightly observed that the Prelude and Fugue should not be kept separate, so I've combined the two videos into one. Sorry for the poor lighting for the fugue!
The St. Anne Prelude and Fugue serve as the bookends of Bach's 1739 Clavier-Übung III. The prelude is a grandiose melding of the French Overture style and the running sixteenths and counterpoint we commonly associate with Bach. This prelude is also said to be Trinitarian as it is written with three flats. The fugue further supports the idea of a Trinitarian inspiration as it is separated into three distinct sections. The first section, expansive and serene, has been linked to God the Father and His lofty role as creator. The second section with its quick, dance-like runs is said to recall the activity of Christ when He dwelt on Earth. The boldly triumphant third section is said to express the resilience and grandeur of the Holy Spirit as it continues to work in the Church to this day. The nickname "St. Anne" comes from the fugue subject which, intentionally or not, greatly resembles the hymn tune "St. Anne", perhaps most commonly associated with the hymn "O God, Our Help in Ages Past".
Thanks to my sister for turning pages!

My most-favorite Bach Prelude and Fugue! *Beautifully* registered and played -- and a beautiful description given as well. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Truly an excellent piece and organist!

That might have been me, if so, well done and thank you! 😃😃😃
A great performance from a talented individual! +1 for the socks
I forgot to put on the Stormtroopers for the fugue… maybe next time I’ll break out the Darth Vaders
Thank you, Anna, this is very well played! Great pedal work! This is a fine organ, 5 swell pedals! I have seen this cathedral before, with the many arches, but can't remember its name. Thank you for posting! Greetings from Canada.
