Broni was an underrated composer and a wonderful man, who I had the pleasure of getting to know in the late 1970s and early '80s on Los Angeles. Here's what I said about him in my notes for the M-G-M 75th anniversary soundtrack anthology CD: "He was a humorous man who harked back to a romantic Mittel Europa of swirling capes, low bows and horse-drawn carriages. Even he admitted his music leaned in that direction and he was never so happy as when he could write music for period films."
Leonard Pennario's piano rendition of Invitation is gorgeous
In “Invitation” (1952) the ill and frail Ellen Pierce lives a peaceful life with her beloved husband Dan (Van Johnson). When she visits Dan’s former girlfriend Maud (Ruth Roman), who seems bittered about the marriage, Ellen becomes worried and skeptical about her and Dan’s relationship. Did he not only marry her, because of true love?
Sounding a bit like we would dive into a full-length soap-opera, “Invitation” is clearly more than that. The plot and the fine acting make it a real treat.
Musically the picture is accompanied by MGM’s long-time workhorse Bronisław Kaper. Though he reused a small theme he had written for the film “A Life of Her Own” (1950), this time this theme got full attention by the composer and became one of the great jazz-classics we know today. Enjoy!
Awesome soundtrack by Ravel!
Hi, Fred! Bronislau Kaper disputed with Benny Herrmann who had more enemies within the film industry. Although he wasn't a genius like Herrmann, the actors -- and only them -- liked the Polish Kaper: Edward G. Robinson, Van Johnson and George Peppard, for example, said his music corrected, even improved, their acting. In common with Herrmann, he also had complex and eventful melodies ( that's to approach Jazz ), wich meant that his released records were very few, this being a rarity. As the Academy doesn't know how to do anything, its ignored this soft and beautiful score ( in " Wedding Reception " I heard Johann Strauss ) to give the only Oscar to Kaper, the following year, the ridiculous " Lili "!!! Bye, Fred, and thanks!!
What A Marvelous Film Score.
Lush and ethereal. Quite lovely
Beautiful piece of music.
Kaper wrote exquisite scores. This theme is subtle and sophisticated and captures the emotional tone/conflicts of this classic melodrama. A time capsule of the upper middle class in the early 50’s. Dorothy M. Is magnificent IMHO. Thx for posting!👍👍
Thank you again for introducing to a film score I’ve never heard. I just read about the film and I can envision the story unfolding ( though I’ll order the DVD!). I am a huge fan of Bronislav Kaper. Favorite: The Swan.
Can’t believe I found this . My favorite Ruth Roman movie!!!!
Lovely score Fred . Thanks for posting 👍🏼👍🏼

For Bronislau Kaper fans: He composed the theme for this unsold pilot for Dr. Kildare. This has Lew Ayres reprising the title role. czcams.com/video/8Rm17D9PzEo/video.html
