Good diagnosis and repair, mate.
Dealers do love a flowchart, which can easily result in an incorrect diagnosis. You can't beat experience and a logical step by step process. Follow the evidence! 😊
Yes, it could well be a flowchart approach that helped with an incorrect diagnosis 😕
Follow the breadcrumbs and find the source 😁
Thanks mate, really appreciate it. I have an apprentice who is currently studying ignition systems and I referred him on to you videos to help with his learning. He likes them 👊👍
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage Cheers Mate - thanks! 😁
Came across your video quite by chance. So after much mumbling and putting off I had a peek at the chain on my 2006 SLK200 with 84k miles: OMG! The teeth on the camshaft sprockets are worn down and the chain has stretched. I want to thank you for saving my car. Will get it sorted asap.
Thanks for taking the time to comment D Casteaux, I appreciate it.
Thank you for the video, I have the same problem with my c200 CGI, and your video is helpful
Brilliant and clear video. Thanks
Excellent video. I know it's 3 years old but one suggestion maybe for the future is when you were showing the cam phaser jumping it would have been nice to have the camera mounted so that you wouldn't shake while you turned the engine. I'm guilty of the same sin in my videos.
This helps a lot in my troubleshooting. Thank you!
Dear Gerard, I need your crank tensioner information. The plug on the crank tensioner blows and the oil pressure is falling. This makes it sound. There are 2 different tensioners. With Yellow fiber and with Blue fiber. I don't know which one to use. Can you explain what is the difference between a2710300963 and a2710301163.
it's amazing how the dealer was able to repair a perfectly good harness, ignore the VVT issue and get payed for no progress... 🤪
Indies have good busy days ahead !
I need the informations on 1996/E/300/diesel/OM-606engine how i will change the timing chain and tensioner,I have all the parts
Please keep going this is the job I got coming up
The full playlist is complete start to finish on my channel 🙌👌👍💪
how can i know the right part number for mercedes w2004 year 2009 c180k fo r the camshafts
Hi Gerard! Really appreciate the content that you have delivered! It is rare to see a mechanic going into such a detail. I've recently got a used W204 with 1.8 CGI M271.8x (evo) engine from 2011 at 228k kilometres on it, with full service history at MB and absolutely nothing was ever touched on that car mechanically for 10 years straight. Is it true that the facelift versions of this m271 engine has taken a significant boost in terms of reliability compared to the pre-facelift? The timing chain component of the facelift m271 engine seems to keep failing, but in a slightly different manner - due to the chain tensioner fault, the chain retards and causes rattling noises, thus damaging further components of the engine unless not being taken care of. Based on your experience and empirical data, should I be worried about mine having this problem and prepare to be visiting the mechanic? Thanks and stay healthy!
hi my has the car same problem rattle noise on cold start and it show the trouble code of camshaft sensor
but my car only runned 20k miles
Hey Gerard! We've nailed down a solution for the issue with the locking mechanism in M271 EVO engines by designing completely new VVT gears. Interested in trying them out?
Fantastic vid . Very informative
🙏🙏💪💪
You mentioned it at the beginning but could have been nice to catch the sync signals of ckp and both cmp in scope. Great job, thanks!!
Thank you,
I appreciate the comment 🙏🙏
Exactly what I'm seeing.
Did you fix the problem ?
Nice video...bring it more my firend...cheers from Portugal
Thank you Ricardo ❤️
It is true that for the Mercedes b classe 2012/2013 petrol 122hp you need to take out the engine to change the clutch?
How much was the cost for this repair ?
If timing is not lining up on arrow 6:03 .The car will bad accelerate, is this right?
Thanks Burke !
hi everyone !
I have a c180 w203 and i just replaced the tensioner, but there is a lot of slack in the Right side of the chain. in the guide. Why?!
Very good
Good video
Great video
Gerard we’re having a problem finding the timing chain tensioner on a 05 c230 kompressor. Please help
Good call Gerard, looking forward to the follow up:):)
Cheers Pat, lots of useful info gonna be packed into these ones 👊💪
Great video as always Ger👌
Not Springer anymore Ger I’ve a Cocker now kid.
Thanks very much 🙏🙏
Rodger that Eric 👍
Gerard , please supply me with the link for the whole job being done. Thanks.
Hi. Thank you for the video!!. Original Mercedes CAMCHAFT ADJUSTERS are very expensive (USD600 or USD700) Have you used aftermarket one's like Febi, Swag and others? They are three times cheaper (USD220). Do you think I should go with originals? Is it worth it? Will originals outlast aftermarket ones?
Febi is very good.
hi. i've got a question about the kit. it's pretty expensive to buy oem parts for that engine. does the aftermarket parts work the same way and are as much effective as the OEM ones i mean timing chain kit.
Hi. Do you have a damaged adjusters? I remanufactured it. If you have it?
sir Very GoOd this teach
Hello, nice video! I have a similar issue my intake cam shifted and is out of time on my 2012 benz. Where did you catch the cam with the ratchet to spin em to the line. It doesn't show in the video 😅. Was it in the front of the cam phasers?
Hi mate,
Got a m271 here in a c180 (w204)
Is this 1.6 the same as the 1.8?
He's got a crank sensor fault. Replaced the crank sensor (ballache) and the code returned.
Same issue, long cold starting crank, occasional juddering at idle. Suspecting a stretched chain and potential bad variator.
Got the same problem last year, fixed by repairing the ECM. There was leak capacitor, flooded and shorted the PCB.
Ended up being the timing chain mate.
How much can it cost labor just to inspect if the chain is ok or not
Just take the cam cover off and pull on the chain and inspect gears i did it all on my channel not very difficult and it didnt cost too much at all.
Labour costs is different everywhere in the world, consult with your local workshops what hourly rate they charge calculate 1-2 hours of cost max for just a top end check. The deeper you go the bigger the cost.
Great stuffs
I've seen this fault before but had to get rid of it because we had no tools.
Any strip down of the engine before sending away to confirm?
Tools can be a massive frustration in missing out on jobs like this.
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage no mate.
We just rang someone from mercedes and told us the issue.
@@plug007 Fair enough at least you had the info for the customer 👌
I replaced chain, adjusters, one of the guides and the tensioner and before I did that crank was 8 degrees past TDC ( cams were in sink with each other) old chain was work out, now with new chain and everything replaced crankshaft is still past TDC in order to drop the camshaft tool in place. Engine was rattling before
My engine was the same way. If I take number 1 plug out. Put a screwdriver down the hole find TDC, my crank timing mark is not at TDC either.
Car ran before I did work. I put it back the way it was. Not car won't start.
Have you had this problem ?
This is a difficult engine to work on.
And I'm a veteran mechanic. 35 years.
@@jesse75 Did you mark TDC on the balancer before you took it apart? I have seen a few timing marks on the balancers move because the rubber material was failing on the balancer. I always mark first and if it is off from TDC I also replace the balancer.
@@donho3617 I marked it with white out. I didn't notice any rubber isolation between pulley and the shaft that goes on front of crank.
I have this engine and timing chain snapped , I don’t know to change engine or fix
M271 has been famous for timing chain issues. If you get a second hand engine, most likely it will be in a pretty similar condition to yours which makes the change pointless. My advice - repair your engine :) @Gerard Burke, what is your recommendation?
like your content,
friend
Thank you 🙏🙏
Is this a non interference engine do you know? Thanks
Good question.
Can you please type a tools list?
Unfortunately, dealers are incapable of diagnostic work, they rely on factory written flow charts without knowing the why or how, despite the diagnostic information being given in the service manual. I took mine in wanted a complete check as I just bought, they couldn't tell me condition of coolant, for example, "Oh we need to order a tester" This dealer has been there since before the 80s, but they fired all their experienced techs to save money.
Jeez that valve cover gasket also needed replacement with all that oil in the plugs
It certainly did 👍
The M271 is a horrible engine and typical of modern German crap. It replaced the M111, the last good Mercedes 4 cylinder petrol engine. Note that the original 2003 M271 (W203) camshaft sprocket design is different. On those, YOU MUST remove the solenoids on the upper timing cover first - three small torx each. If you try to remove the timing cover with them fitted you are almost certain to break a solenoid plunger.
V6 ford duratec aj 30 jaguar x type and m57 diesel bmw strong engine.
one advantage of working on eu cars you can specialise and make better money
Yes there are a lot of euro specialist out there and certainly make good money in the area 👍💵
I will say this is a crappy problem this engine has luckily i caught mine early and could fix it without too much hassle. They should have just double chained this engine. Wpuld have been way more reliable. Also this is the m271 EVO engine and is slightly different to the Kompressor.
Sorry Mate, your camera at that speed is way too shaky. You knew in advance that you would need the chain-link tool, why did you dig it out of the blue box, it should have been laying on top in preparation for the video with no fumbling about. I am a believer in preparation especially when I notice you are doing some editing of the video. As an example, I also believe in picking up the tool from the top of the blue box, modeling it, and returning it to the same point on the blue box, it shows a bit more professionalism. I know you're a technician and not a film producer so a bit of constructive criticism Mate. Now I will go watch the rest of the videos about this full repair, thanks so much.
Hello Duane,
Firstly thanks for watching the video.
I am certainly no film producer, I am a full time professional technician and part time youtuber. This means I can not have any disturbance in my work flow or job times when I am on the job.
It can lead to some shaky shots and not the clear precise 4k imagery that I honestly would love to have.
I am working at a pace in a busy workshop to get jobs done to a high standard in a reasonable time frame. This is the outcome of those events.
I make the best of what I have to try and educate and inform anyone that may find it useful on these jobs.
Maybe someday I will be full time and I can have it all set up on a tripod with lighting and microphones all around me 🤔😁
Would be pretty cool 😎👍
Thanks for watching, I hope you enjoy the rest of them.
A scope would of confirmed this in 15 min
I have a pico scope and you still have to do the work and get in there regardless, info is very helpful right across the board.
