    All good points. They have their uses, particularly touring, where you overnight in a different place each day. But if you want to base yourself in one place and do day trips out, you have to strike camp each day, which becomes tedious and then set up again. A ground tent is much better for an extended stay. Thanks for the videos, I am enjoying them.

      @@CampingCo unfortunately, if you have a week at a particular base camp and want to go game viewing to different locations, like here in Africa, you have to pack up the other gear too, like furniture, side awnings, shower cubicle etc. They arent the ultimate in all situations.

    True , roof top tents are not for everyone . But then there are many who cant sleep inside their cars , they find it too clostrophobic . And laying a tent on the ground has its own drawbacks . So its a personal preference ...and as you mentioned never get bowled over by the utube videos

    Valid points. Here are few more points why I don't like roof tents:
    1. You can't do stealth camping with roof tents. Car camping as an idea is still new to most Indians. You have to explain it to others and also take permission for parking which I don't like.
    2. Safety is a big concern. We have stray animals problem and high crime rate also in certain places. One would feel safe sleeping inside, especially with kids and family.

    Finally finally someone spoke about this issue. I was so pissed off watching youtube filled with RTT videos on normal cars.
    Always wonder do these guys have any idea its risky for car structure... For me , if i am risking the car strength via A,B or C pillar permanently i am dropping the idea on the spot !
    RTT is fun but only five vehicles are successful for that : Tata Xenon , Isuzu V-Cross , Gypsy (Soft top you can customise the rear section) , Bolero Camper and Scorpio Getaway.
    Baki sach bolu to yeh RTT ek - do baar e acha lagta hai , when family starts getting annoyed due to no washroom and shower etc... that's when you think about doing camping by the day and coming back to a "Room" by night

    A Caravan conversion is a compromise from the best performances of the vehicle meant for.

      Oh really? You think majority of people know stuff here? 80% drivers in India don't know even how to change tyres, let alone the terms 'drag' and 'center of gravity'. Most modifications here are done using 'jugaads' by local workshops without any consideration for safety or durability. No one cares about quality if it is shiny and chrome plated.. take example of cheap Chinese knockoff alloys doing rounds in automobile markets...

    AB ... I also try to think that safety at night in Rooftop Tent (May in Groups any one can safe but if only two person try to camp in city or outer part ... it will not safe ... It is my worry) ... But ... as per u mention Extra load on Carrier as well as car or van still I personally not agree ... Because .... in every cities there is ....Cash Logistics Vans (Mostly Roof modify and increase height one + feet ... specially Bolero) .... If not practical to increase Height or extra load on Roof ... Than ... This Cash Logistics Companies not Modify their Van.... and use very easily.

    • @ABVentures
      @ABVentures  Před 2 lety

      Increasing height is one thing. Putting extra load on the height instead of base is another. This increases center of gravity. If you put load on vehicle chasis, it can be managed. But putting load on Vehicle roof will put load on the pillars (a,b,c). This can damage the roof. For the Bolero's you are talking about, load is kept inside not on rooftop... hope this clarifies

      Yes that happens when you blindly follow youtubers and ignore logic. The tourism industry is dependent on roof top tents? What about the hotels and homestays?? A thing like RTT is meant for camping in remote areas like Ladakh or Spiti. You know what runs the economy there?? Small homestays and shacks selling food. Locals there depend on the tourists for earnings. Then some some idiot trends a video showing a tent and cooking food and everyone starts following them. What will the happen to the tourism industry then?? My car has all the amenities from kitchen to bed, still I prefer to stay in hotels and eat in restaurants coz it's the exchange of money that boosts economy. RTT is not meant for everyone.
